N.W. India is a different story.. These are Gandhara(mostly Kushan period) reliefs. I have seen scale armor many times from them. Their soldier's layout, much like their culture, is a mix of Indian, Greek, etc.

Some times you can see tunics, etc. But not very common.(in ancient period)

I'm sure they did take off the heavy bronze plates. The regular Indian soldiers pretty much wore something similar to what they wear outside the military. Some of the elites wore bronze scales.

What were you really expecting? It's hot as shit in India. You can see one guy with bronze scale armor though.
