Chinese are churning out their own y-20 in huge numbers. Which can lift 66 tons. It's about time India starts designing it's own transport jets.

I guess they are worried about availability and maintenance. It seems IAF is decidingly moving away from Russian platforms. Sent from my C103 using Tapatalk

Well so they screwed up and now c17 line is gone! Buying a new type will be extra expensive . We only operate 17 IL 76 rest 6 are tankers. Anyway 17 il76 MD give us 17*48= 816 ton lifting while 11 c17 give us 11*77= 847 ton . So we are better off still although not as much as we'd want to...

So we are short of 6 c17 . That is 6*70= 420 tonnage of lifting capabilities. Or almost 21 c130-j30 could full fill it at 20 ton each. It won't be same as c17 can lift at once but it will get the job done without adding a new type to arsenal. Sent from my C103 using Tapatalk

You are projecting you're ideal force structure on iaf. But what does iaf wants? Has iaf projected a requirement of such huge numbers ? Does anybody have any authentic data about what iaf wants in future transport capabilities. Sent from my C103 using Tapatalk

Your calculations are good. But that's not the point. The point is what is official iaf requirement of c17? What number did iaf officially demanded? Sent from my C103 using Tapatalk

All this discussion going on about c17 and it's alternative. Does anybody actually know how many c17 iaf actually wants? What is doctrine for their operational use? C17 or equivalent heavy lifter cost a bomb to operate. They are strategic assets for specific use and power projection . Not...

While it's true that Chinese have taken lead but they are not that for ahead. If we examine there most advanced and potent platform like j20 , carriers etc they all have mostly developed within last 10-15 years. And we are trailing china exactly 10-15 years economically. So we can catch up...
