Neither I am saying that IA had done the best thing by retaining the Rifled Gun Kiddo........... I have only presented one of the many reason which must have compelled the user to retain the rifled gun instead of going for a smooth bore one. Making a rifled gun is much more labour intensive job...

You tell me one ammo which rifled guns can't fire which only smooth bore guns can do. Mind you, Arjun also did fired LAHAT missile from the same rifled gun.

Now see where your prob lies. Do you think that APFSDS is the only round Arjun would be firing? Read this line slowly and try to understand what is the logic.

One main reason might be its accuracy at longer range in comparison to smooth bore gun.

I am not quite sure of how many tanks we do have in a Regiment. But since ours is based on UK system, then as per news 112 are confirmed as of now.

Although not sure, but Merkava too has something like that size. Maybe @Shaitan or @Saumyasupraik or some other known member could point it out. I think it is there on the right of the cannon. The difference is there in the overall turret design. Else Merkava and Arjun, both are using the same...

Because unlike infantry, it has to paint a target as far as 5 to 8km max. So it has to be bigger then the hand held designators.

Apart from all these, what I feel compel IA to choose rifled gun over smooth bore is lack of required Tank simulator for firing exercise. Rifled guns are more accurate then smooth bore ones over a distance, but the downside of it is the lost of KE of the rounds it fires till that distance and...
