Warships a big hit on Navy Day at Paradip - The Times of India
~
KENDRAPADA: More than 10,000 people thronged the Paradip port on Tuesday as the Indian Navy gave them a rare chance to see warships from close quarters. Two naval warships, Khukri and Khanjar, have been thrown open to public at the port, as a prelude to Navy Day celebrations.

The ships are equipped with extensive weaponry including surface to surface and surface to air missiles and various rapid fire guns. The ships are also capable of helicopter operations, which give them an added reach for various naval operations, said lieutenant commander Pramod Menon, the public relation officer of Indian Navy at Paradip on Tuesday. Besides, the warships have a formidable array of other weapons, sensors and anti-ship sea skimming missiles.

It was a lifetime opportunity for the visitors who had come from various parts of the district and its nearby areas. People waited in a long queue stretching almost one kilometre to see the warships. INS Khukri had sunk in the Arabian Sea after being torpedoed by a Pakistani submarine in 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.The ship's captain, Mahendra Nath Mulla, who went down with the ship, was posthumously awarded Maha Vir Chakra, the second highest militaryaward in India. A new vessel, commissioned in 1989, was later named after INS Khukri.

Ramakanta Mishra, a teacher of Saraswati SishuMandir of Marsaghai, said,"As many as 40 students of our school on Tuesday visited the warships. Theywere delighted." December 4 is celebrated as Navy Day in India. This was the day when the Indian Navy played a significant role in the bombing of Karachi harbor in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
~
The name given to the attack was Operation Trident which was launched on December 4. Owing to its success, the day of the attack has beencelebrated as Navy Day ever since, Menon said.
