A little bit of playing to the gallery it seems. Why did he invite them in the first place? Surely the Pakistani delegation didn't have a role in affairs at LoC.

Country flag
Or maybe he invited them purposely just to ask later to 'Leave'. Thats hell of a way to embarrass them of their paki origins in front of whole world! :thumb:

On a parting note, I wonder if same stick can be used on Chinese investors for PLA's incursions & land grabbing? :hmm:

I bet they learnt that from the BCCI. Remember Pakistani players and IPL auctions?

NDTV is trying to downplay this summit. Asking why Indian Inc is going gaga over this summit. Ranting why Modi is so been praised by Industrialists when there are so many big leaders in this country.

I thought If NDTV journalist can name few who are of Modi's stature, guess what, I found non. NDTV reporter shamelessly dragged S. W B Patel into the discussion when no one from BJP comparing him Modi.

I was impressed when Modi referred to a report that Gujarat has produced 72% jobs out of total created in India.
If same people praised sonia and raul baba then will ndtv question it

I agree on that why invite them in first place and I don't believe these people had any role to play in the LOC attack.

More of show rather real substance.

Narendra Modi basks in rock star reception at Vibrant Gujarat Summit - The Times of India

GANDHINAGAR: Mukesh Ambani, India's most powerful businessman and Asia's second-richest person, would not ordinarily sit on a stage for three-and-a-half hours without access to a cellphone, but this was not just anybody's event.

Narendra Modi, the chief minister of Gujarat and potentially India's next prime minister, drew a rock star's reception from the cream of India's tycoon class as well as diplomats at his "Vibrant Gujarat Summit" last week.

In one memorable image from the event to promote investment in a state that has become an industrial powerhouse, the white-bearded Modi, assembled diplomats and the country's top business leaders, including the Ambani brothers, raised hands together as the packed auditorium cheered.

"He's getting hero worship today. Quite dramatic," said Robin Phinney, CEO of Karnalyte Resources, a Canada-based potash miner in which state-owned Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals took a 20 percent stake last week, said at the start of the three-day event on Friday.

"When I came here I had no idea this was going on. Seems like the industry really likes what he's doing," he told Reuters.

Tycoons and diplomats lavished praise on Modi, seeming eager to mark their presence in front of the man many in business feel should lead India despite a controversial past that makes him one of the country's most divisive politicians.

Modi avoids talk of higher office, but his popularity in the state, as well as with business and many in India's emerging urban middle class, is fueling speculation he will lead his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against the ruling Congress in national elections to be held by 2014.

His record as a pro-business leader presiding over a state government that wins praise for efficient administration stands in contrast to the eight-year tenure of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government, which has been stymied by fractious coalition partners and a string of corruption scandals.

While big business tends to hedge its bets by backing both the main national parties in elections, industry's support for Modi could prove a powerful source of fund-raising if he becomes the party's standard-bearer.

The black mark against Modi, 62, is the accusation by critics that he did not do enough to stop - or even quietly encouraged - religious riots in 2002 that killed as many as 2,000 people, most of them Muslims.

That episode led the United States to deny Modi a visa in 2005, although US-India Business Council President Ron Somers praised Modi at the investment summit for enabling Gujarat's "stunning progress".

Peter Hass, the US consul general in Mumbai, also attended the event on Friday but did not appear on stage.

However, British high commissioner James Bevan was among those joining hands onstage on Friday, and in his remarks focused on the close links between Gujarat and the United Kingdom, which has a large Gujarati community.

In October, the British envoy visited Modi to discuss business and investment, ending a 10-year UK diplomatic boycott imposed on him for failing to stop the Gujarat riots.

'A LORD OF MEN'

Some of the most effusive praise came from Anil Ambani, Mukesh's younger brother and head of India's third-largest telecoms company, who called him "a lord of men" and asked for a standing ovation for the chief minister.

The Ambani brothers, who are of Gujarati origin, both exchanged hugs onstage with Modi at Friday's standing-room-only opening ceremony in a 5,000-seat auditorium, but kept their distance from each other. In 2005, they famously split the conglomerate founded by their father and have since remained apart although they have withdrawn rival legal claims.

Ratan Tata, the recently-retired chairman of India's biggest corporate, the Tata group, praised Modi's efficient administration. His successor, Cyrus Mistry, appearing nervous in his first public speech since taking over late last month, thanked Modi during Saturday's closing session for personally inviting him.

Modi first held the Vibrant Gujarat event in 2003 to attract investment after the violence and an earthquake in 2001, and over the years it has become an increasingly big stage for Modi to market the state, and himself.

As is often the case with events that Modi attends, cellphone signals were jammed for security purposes.

"We are here because we want to be part of the economic miracle that is Gujarat. We are hoping to deepen this relationship," Canada's minister for immigration and multi-culturalism, Jason Kenney, told delegates. Canada, along with Japan, was a partner country for the event.

Modi, fresh from a resounding December win in state legislative elections for the BJP, sat mostly unsmiling during the fulsome adulation.

"All these people who are greeting us, trying to speak our language, they just want to be part of our economic success," he said as the event closed.

Gujarat FDCA inks pact with pharma organisation for knowledge sharing during VG Summit 2013

Gujarat FDCA inks pact with pharma organisation for knowledge sharing during VG Summit 2013

Suja Nair Shirodkar, Mumbai
Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 08:00 Hrs [IST]
The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) became the first regulatory body in the country to enter into a strategic partnership with 18 pharmaceutical organisations from across India and abroad, to focus on knowledge sharing and other innovation based programmes. The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed on January 11 during the inaugural function of the Vibrant Gujarat (VG) Summit 2013, will focus extensive training programme and interactive session between the state regulators and the other signatories.

This initiative keeps up with this year's theme that focuses on exploring knowledge sharing and networking initiatives. Considering the widespread importance of this event, the Gujarat government had received about 38 proposal from across the globe which after sifting through rigorous process was finalised to the selected 18 organisations.

Through this partnership, the state regulatory office will be closely working with different pharmaceutical organisations, educational and research institutes, clinical research institutes, etc. on various research and innovation based programmes. Dr H G Koshia, commissioner, Gujarat FDCA informed that this is a huge achievement for them considering that they have been able to garner interest from so many organisations to ink pact with a regulatory body for training and other knowledge sharing activities.

"We are very excited and happy with this development as it highlights the trust the industry and educational institutes hold in us. Through this initiative our main focus will be on upgrading and updating the regulatory process of the state to meet with all the global regulatory compliances and requirements as and when needed. We will also be involved in cross training sessions which will be beneficial for both the industry as well as the regulatory officials, to keep up with the latest compliance and regulatory challenges," Dr Koshia added.

Some of the important organisations with which the Guj FDCA had agreed to work on continuous process are DIA, IPGA, PERD & NIPER Centre, etc. to name a few.

Apart from this, in a major boost to the trade and business opportunities generating from the state, the VG 2013 Summit was able to attract an investment of Rs. 5943 crore into the state from pharmaceutical sector alone. This is by entering into an MoU with 133 companies from the pharma sector across the globe, creating a potential employment opportunity for about 23, 700 people.

VG summit is a two-day biennial event organised by the Gujarat government with an aim to bring together business leaders, investors, educational and research institutes, corporations, thought leaders and policy makers to invest in the state.

Vibrant Gujarat haunts Mamata
Probal Basak & Ishita Ayan Dutt / Kolkata/ Haldia Jan 16, 2013, 00:23 IST
A poor turnout from India Inc, who made no commitment to invest in Bengal, and a roll call that went haywire, Bengal Leads 2013 was a complete antithesis of Vibrant Gujarat. Yet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laboured to counter the investment-friendly image nurtured by Narendra Modi.

Prepared for an obvious comparison with the just-concluded Vibrant Gujarat investors' summit, Mamata Banerjee carefully ranted the disadvantages facing Bengal, vis-à-vis Gujarat right at the start of her speech.

"Those who are comparing this (Bengal Leads) with that (Vibrant Gujarat) should keep in mind geographical and other differences. They have 17 ports, we have two, that too suffering because of Centre's negligence. They do not have a population density like us. Also, there are no political obstructions. There is politics only during election. Above all, Gujarat is fortunate enough not to inherit 35 years of legacy (Left rule)," she said.
Banerjee spoke strongly against "a section of the media" comparing Bengal and Gujarat and told the gathering of local industrialists (as industry captains from outside Bengal gave the summit a miss) not to take the negative propaganda seriously. In a bid to prove her point, Banerjee started listing out big investment proposals that the state had bagged. In her enthusiasm, she said that Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) was setting up the world's second largest steel plant in Durgapur.

Then started the roll call as the Chief Minister called out for SAIL chairman, C S Verma. Verma, however, was not present and a member of the corporate communications department pointed out that a 0.5 million tonne iron nugget project was being set up in joint venture with Kobe Steel.

Not deterring from her point of announcing big projects, Banerjee wanted to showcase proposed power projects by NTPC, but it turned out that there was no representative from the public sector to corroborate her point, as she called out for one. She even addressed ITC executive director, Kurush Grant, as chairman, Y C Deveshwar.

The list of Bengal's "big" projects, however, did not include JSW Steel's proposed 10 million tonne steel project at Salboni in West Medinipur. At Rs 35,000 crore, it happens to be Bengal's single largest investment, though. Jindal, who was present at Bengal Leads 2012, was not there on Tuesday.

The state government was supposed to unveil the industrial policy at the summit, but it turned out that there were some 'final touches' that were required.

Banerjee reiterated her land policy and said that it was the best option for the industry to go for direct purchase. In the past year and a half, industry representatives have complained enough about the policy, which is seen as one of the biggest stumbling blocks to investment.Twelve companies, from the SME sector, were however, handed over land allotment letters. The inauguration ceremony finally closed with Banerjee demanding a song from C K Dhanuka, promoter, Aspet India and CESC vice chairman, Sanjiv Goenka. Dhanuka obliged while Goenka was seen lip syncing.
