US Official Tells Japan to Calm Down over Island Dispute

January 17, 2013
A senior U.S. official issued a subtle but clear message to the Japanese government suggesting Tokyo tone down its rhetoric and actions in its intensifying territorial spat with Beijing.

"We have conveyed privately our desire for quiet diplomacy and effective diplomacy to take place between all the parties involved," Kurt Campbell, the Obama administration's top diplomat for East Asia, told reporters after visiting Japanese officials in Tokyo. "We made very clear our desire to see cooler heads prevail and the maintenance of peace and stability overall."

Mr. Campbell, an assistant secretary of state, didn't explicitly blame Japan for its behavior in the dispute, nor did he criticize China. Despite questions from reporters suggesting responsibility for one side or the other, Mr. Campbell maintained a neutral tone in describing the situation.

Asked what steps he'd like Japan to take, he said: "We are concerned by some of the actions around the maritime issues. We have conveyed privately our desire for quiet diplomacy, effective diplomacy, to take place between all the parties involved."

That is what you many feel, but then it is not so.

Japan is quite independent in its policy, though like Korea (South) they are interlinked in a strategic partnership with the US.

if US asks Japan do something, they just follow suit, the puppet country can never dare to say no to their master and stand up for their own.

It's not that extreme, but Japanese policymaking is pretty subservient to US interests. For example, through 2003-7, when US investment firms (led by Merill Lynch) were lobbying to privatize Japan Post, Koizumi pretty much did whatever the US State Dept 'recommended' he do on the matter.

How can Japan becomes an independant country with US fleet just staying inside Tokyo Bay?

Have you ever heard about the organization called "Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office" and what's the function it acts in Japanese political climate?

Well I think it's much more good for the Chinese if the Japanese would rely on US Military coz even US think twice on defending Japan... While if Japan created its own Military.. .I doubt what will happens next.... Coz even China is afraid of rearming Japan....

Calm down is a part of diplomacy.

But US has also said that they will stand by Japan because of treaty obligations.

That is the trump card!

China was the puppy of USSR once!

How does that not make Japan independent?

US places it fleet in countries where it has mutual strategic interests.

That is what is called Defence Treaties.

Heard of them?

There are PLA troops in Northern Area of Pakistan.

Does it mean Pakistan is a part of China?

It is better that the US has some relations with Japan or else they could sort out Asia including China as they did and that would be a greater danger.

Never forget Nanking since you all feel that they did a massacre there!

The Japanese are capable of anything!

Beware of the Rising Sun!
