MIRANSHAH, Pakistan: A US drone fired two missiles at a vehicle carrying militants in northwest Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least four people near the Afghan border, local security officials said.

The missiles struck the vehicle in Mubarak Shahi village, 20 kilometres (12 miles) east of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan tribal district, a stronghold of Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

"A US drone fired two missiles at a vehicle when it was transporting militants from one place to another. At least four militants have been killed," a security official in Miranshah told AFP.

Another security official in the northwestern city of Peshawar confirmed the attack and casualties. Both officials said the identity of those killed was not yet known.

The covert US drone strikes are publicly criticized by the Pakistani government as a violation of sovereignty but American officials believe they are a vital weapon in the war against Islamist militants.

A report commissioned by legal lobby group Reprieve in September estimated that between 474 and 881 civilians were among 2,562 to 3,325 people killed by drones in Pakistan between June 2004 and September 2012.

'US drone strikes kill Mullah Nazir, 12 others in Pakistan'
Peshawar: At least 13 people, including Taliban commander Maulvi Nazir Wazir, were killed by two US drone strikes in Pakistan's South and North Waziristan tribal areas.

The strike, carried out around midnight, was the first US drone strike in 2013.

Pakistani intelligence officials say Taliban commander Maulvi Nazir was reportedly among nine people killed in the first strike in the village of Angoor Adda in South Waziristan.

They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media.

Residents in both Angoor Adda and Wana, the biggest town in South Waziristan, said they heard announcements on mosque loudspeakers announcing Nazir's death.

Mullah Nazir's deputy, Ratta Khan, was also killed, reports in Pakistani media said.

Reports of individual deaths are difficult to verify independently, and the US rarely comments on its secretive drone program.

Last year, a total of 39 US drone strikes were launched in the country, mostly in its northwest tribal area of North Waziristan that killed a total of 274 people.
