Sri Lanka expels 161 foreign Muslim clerics, including Indians, for flouting visa regulations

COLOMB: Sri Lanka has ordered a group of 161 foreign Islamic clerics, including Indians, to leave the country for flouting visa regulations.

Sri Lanka's immigration head Chulananda Perera said that the clerics had no right to preach in mosques as they had arrived on tourist visas.

"They have violated immigration laws. A tourist visa is to have a holiday or visit friends and family, and not to preach Islam," The BBC quoted Perera, as saying.

The official also said that some local Muslims had complained that the visitors were not teaching a moderate form of Islam.

The group also included preachers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives and Arab nations. They have been ordered to leave by January31.

Perera said the group belonged to Tablighi Jamaat, an international Islamic movement popular in Sri Lanka and the region.

According to the report, Muslim members of Sri Lanka's government have expressed concern at the mass expulsion, and are expected to meet other officials to try to delay the move.

The news has also created consternation in the Muslim community in Sri Lanka, the third largest ethnic group in the country after Sinhalese and Tamils.

This is active & excellent work. These mullahs, their organizations, source of funding need to be culled before they rot the mindset of ordinary SLankan Muslims.

Interesting. in Srilanka, Muslims are a "ethnic" group? not the same people?
I think, even in Tamilnadu, they generally identifies Muslims as a different group rather than their people. which is not so in rest of India.

This is not the non Muslims fault...... many Muslims communities in SL are not opened to public... and non Muslims dare not to go into those places.. they prefer to be a different group rather than to integrate into the society.

Why are the Muslims being targeted in Sri Lanka?

Have been successful in converting the Buddhists of Sri Lanka/

    If so, how many?

And why are the Buddhists, who follow a peaceful religion, are being converted to a religion that is supposed to be a religion of peace, but is not that peaceful as Buddhism practised by Sri Lankans?

Tablighi, the Muslims claim, is a peace loving organisation that only spread the goodness of Islam but does not demand that people convert without their own will!

Sri Lankan Buddhists are anything but peaceful. They are the worst advertisement for Buddhism in the world.

What do you mean by many Muslims communities in SL are not opened to public... and non Muslims dare not to go into those places..? Are you suggesting that your Govt's writ does not run when it comes to the Muslims? How come?

By stating that the Muslims - they prefer to be a different group rather than to integrate into the society. - are you suggesting that they are not Sri Lankans and instead have flown down from Mars?

You do disservice to the Muslims of Sri Lanka, unless you can justify your statements.

    As rabid as the Wahhabis?

The Tablighi is associated with the Deoband and the Deoband is quite rabid under a guise of peaceful Islam.

In SL they are considered a different ethnic group - Moors - with Arabic origins.

In Tamil Nadu...What are you talking about ?

Anyway a good move..if only India could follow suit and start with the expulsion or a restraint order on crackheads like Zakir Naik..

Pol pot was a Maoist - atheist. Also, oppressive regimes are not representative of the people. The same applies to Myanmar.

I cannot think of a bigger genocide than what happened in SL among Buddhist dominated nations. Any way, these are my views only. You are free to disagree.

Pol Pot was an atheist. That is what all Communist say of themselves!

Prince Norodom Sihanouk was the former king of Cambodia from 1941 as well as Head of State from 1955 to 1970 before resigning in 1976. He once said of Pol Pot:

"Pol Pot does not believe in God but he thinks that heaven, destiny, wants him to guide Cambodia in the way he thinks it the best for Cambodia, that is to say, the worst. Pol Pot is mad, you know, like Hitler."

Buddhists may not believe in God, but Atheists, by comparison, don't believe in anything beyond the natural and observable, heaven included (and Pol Pot’s comparison follow Hitler in Sihanouk’s description was not an Atheist either). It seems that Pol Pot was not so big an Atheist as some Christians would like to present, mixing communism (social relations between humans) with atheism (humans relations with god) - they are two separate ideologies. The inflammatory comparison between the two is a logical fallacy in which the secular nature of Communism is assumed to justify the conclusion that all secularists are Communists, which is clearly not the case since an attribute of one system may also be an attribute of other systems. The American constitutional republic, for example, is also secular in nature.

Pol Pot convinced the Vietnamese to help the Cambodian Communists set up their own base camp. The central committee of the party met later that year and issued a declaration calling for armed struggle. The declaration also emphasized the idea of "self-reliance" in the sense of extreme Cambodian nationalism. In the border camps, the ideology of the Khmer Rouge was gradually developed. The party, breaking with Marxism, declared rural peasant farmers to be the true working class proletarian and the lifeblood of the revolution. This is in some sense explained by the fact that none of the central committee were in any sense "working class". All of them had grown up in a feudal peasant society. The party adapted elements of Theravada Buddhism to justify their non-standard Communism.

I totally agree it was a genocide.

    But Pol Pot was worse!
