New Pak ISI Chief Shares Tenuous Link With SRK

PTI | Rezaul H Laskar | Islamabad | Mar 10, 2012

Pakistan's new ISI chief, Lt Gen Zahir-ul-Islam, is the nephew of Indian National Army hero Shah Nawaz Khan and through him, shares a tenuous link with Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan.:thumb::thumb::thumb::tsk::tsk::tsk::tsk:

Islam's father served as a brigadier in the Pakistan Army and Shah Nawaz Khan, who was a major general in the INA led by Subhas Chandra Bose, was his uncle, leading Pakistani defence analyst Ikram Sehgal told PTI.

"One son of Shah Nawaz Khan went with him at the time of Partition, while another, Mahmood Nawaz, stayed on in Pakistan and became a full colonel.

"In fact, Mahmood Nawaz went and met his father only after retirement as he could not travel to India while he was in service," Sehgal said, providing details of the new ISI chief's extended family.

Shahrukh Khan's late mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Shah Nawaz Khan, according to the Bollywood star's biography on several websites.

Islam, who was yesterday appointed the new head of the powerful spy agency by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, comes from a military family and was born in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

It could not immediately be ascertained whether Islam had ever met Shah Nawaz Khan, who died in 1983.

Shah Nawaz Khan was himself born at Kahuta and served in the British Indian Army during World War II.

He was captured when Japanese troops overran Singapore in 1942 and then joined the INA.

He subsequently fought alongside Japanese forces against the British in Burma (now Myanmar).

Shah Nawaz Khan was captured by the British and put on trial with other INA officers in 1946.

They were convicted for treason but were discharged due to intense pressure from the public.

He later joined the Congress party and was elected to the Lok Sabha four times.

Before Islam's appointment as the ISI chief, some media reports had suggested that Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan's uncle Maj Gen Isfandyar Ali Khan Pataudi, a deputy director general in the spy agency, was in the running for the top slot.

However, sources told PTI that Pataudi was never seen as a serious contender for the post of ISI chief.

Some details about Shah Nawaz Khan, the link betweeb Shah Rukh Khan and the ISI chief:
Shah Nawaz Khan (general) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shah Nawaz Khan (24 January 1914 – 9 December 1983) was an Indian soldier who is remembered as an officer who served in the Second Indian National Army during World War II and later came to be one of the three defendants in the first of the INA trials in 1946.

Lt. Colonel Shahnawaz Khan, son of Captain Sardar Tikka Khan of Matore, studied at the Prince of Wales Royal Indian Military College, Dehradun and was commissioned as an officer in the British Indian Army. He was captured during the Second World War by the Japanese and interned in Singapore. Subhash Chandra Bose arrived in Singapore and extolled the men (pows) to be prepared to face thirst, hunger and in the end death, to attain liberation of India from the British. He saw the war as an opportunity to drive out the British Rulers. Shah Nawaz was impressed by Netaji's great patriotic speeches. Shah Nawaz volunteered to join the INA in 1943, under the command of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He was included in the Cabinet of Arzi Hukumat-e- Azad Hind formed by Netaji. In September 1945 Netaji decided to select a regiment consisting of the cream of INA and send it to action to spearhead the advance into India. It was known as "Subhash Brigade" and Shah Nawaz was selected by Netaji to command it. The Brigade took part in fighting in the Arakan, Haka, Falam and in the vicinity of Kohima. In December 1944 Shah Nawaz was appointed as no. 1 Commander Division at Mandalay. The first tricolor was hoisted at Moirang in April 1944 at the liberated land.

In 1956, the government constituted a committee to look into the circumstances around Subhash Chandra Bose's death. Major General, Shah Nawaz Khan, headed the committee, whose members included Suresh Chandra Bose. The Committee began its work in April 1956 and concluded four months later when two out of the three members (excluding Sureshchandra Bose) of the Committee signed a paper that stated that Netaji indeed died in the aeroplane crash at Taihoku (Japanese for Taipei) in Formosa (now Taiwan), on 18 August 1945.

You could have taken it the other way. That is:
No wonder the new ISI chief has a soft corner for Indians!

Who knows, instead of sending terrorists to India, he might send those 72 virgins instead, out of his love for Indians! Be positive.

Saar, Spending too much time tracking Pakistanis can be injurious to one's health. It can lead to serious problems like Pakistaniyat and you may end up thinking like them... Be careful! You may face withdrawal symptoms but do it before its too late!!! :p

Was being sarcastic about the ISI chief being in love with India.

SRK has close ties with congress, he did not condemn Mumbai attacks & instead he was saying openly in media that we need to understand minorities Psyche.

Infact there were rumors that he would venture into politics & congress was ready to offer him MP seat. I donno whether we can lure ISI through SRK or will it be vice versa?

isi chief surely looks like mogambo the great actor Amrish Puri .

All these Khans are supposedly related to Afghans(Pashtuns). I believe, this is a reason why Bollywood movies are loved in Pakistan(and Afghan) since they take Pride in this?
