S-500 : The Most Advanced Missile Defence system in the world

Currently in the blueprint stage, the S-500 is a Russian surface-to-air missile system that, if developed, will be able to track and destroy ballistic missiles with ranges of up to 3,500 kilometers. At present, however, reports indicate that Russia has not yet started building the S-500. Russia had completed theoretical calculations on the S-500 and, if deployed, the system would outperform the S-400 as well as the U.S. Patriot Advanced Capability-3 system. The system will be capable of destroying hypersonic and ballistic targets not only in Air but also in space and work as future Star wars weapon system.

Once this system is operational it would out perform US patriot missile defense system , THAAD , Israel`s Arrow defense system or any other defense system that exist or in the process of development.

The system will be operational in 2018 , while US is still working on THAAD and its still not 100 % operational and lacks the range. It is supposed you can have its Star wars capable defense system not earlier than 2030.

S-500 would be intended to take down stealth plane including F-22 and F-35 or any stealth plane in the radius with the help of Russian advanced GPS and tracking satellite . S-500 posses its own APG radar and will bend towards its target at 180 deg if needed.

Russia will start serial production of its next-generation S-500 missile system in 2014, an aerospace defense chief said on Thursday.

The S-500 air defense system will be able to track and destroy ballistic missiles with ranges of up to 3,500 kilometers.

"[The S-500] is currently in development. By 2014, it should enter into serial production," aerospace defense strategic commander Lt. Gen. Valery Ivanov said.

"This system will be able to defend territories at heights of up to 50 kilometers," he added.

Russia's aerospace defense troops currently use S-300 and S-400 systems.

New S-400 air defense missiles will be deployed at Dmitrov just outside Moscow in March, Ivanov said.

MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will create a new generation of air and space defenses to counter any strikes against its territory by 2020 due to a potential foreign threat, the Air Force commander said on Tuesday.

"By 2030...foreign countries, particularly the United States, will be able to deliver coordinated high-precision strikes from air and space against any target on the whole territory of Russia," Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said, referring to the potential for new hypersonic and space-based offensive weapons.

"That is why the main goal of the development of the Russian Air Force until 2020 is to create a new branch of the Armed Forces, which would form the core of the country's air and space defenses to provide a reliable deterrent during peacetime, and repel any military aggression with the use of conventional and nuclear arsenals in a time of war," the general said.

According to Zelin, all Russian Air Force units will be constantly combat-ready by 2020.

"We are planning to conduct a gradual transition of Air Force units to a constant combat-ready status...and accomplish this task by 2020," the commander said.

During this period, the Air Force will bring combat units to full strength, equip them with modernized and new weaponry, and significantly improve combat training of military pilots.

Zelin said under the new concept, air-space defense brigades will be created within Russia's Air Force, and they will be equipped with advanced S-400 and planned S-500 air defense systems.

"In line with the new air-space defense concept, we have already formed a number of brigades, which will be armed with S-400 and S-500 air defense systems," Zelin said at a news conference in Moscow.

The S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) is designed to intercept and destroy airborne targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), twice the range of the U.S. MIM-104 Patriot, and 2 1/2 times that of Russia's S-300PMU-2.

The system is also believed to be able to destroy stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, and is effective at ranges up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and speeds up to 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) per second.

Russia's Defense Ministry considers the delivery of S-400 air defense missile systems to the Russian Armed Forces a priority, and wants the defense industry to increase the production of these systems despite the current economic crisis.

The fifth-generation S-500 air defense system, which is currently in the blueprint stage and is expected to be rolled out by 2012, would outperform the S-400 as well as the U.S. Patriot Advanced Capability-3 system.

"The S-500 system is being developed under a unique design...and will be capable of destroying hypersonic and ballistic targets," the general said.

Meanwhile, the Soviet-era MiG-31 Foxhound supersonic interceptor aircraft will most likely be used as part of the new air-space defense network, as was intended when it was designed.

"We are upgrading this system to be able to accomplish the same [air-space defense] tasks," Zelin said.

According to some sources, Russia has over 280 MiG-31 aircraft in active service and about 100 aircraft in reserve.

So sad that we don't have a single long-range air defense missile system on our own. The Akash is good for short ranges, but we seriously one long range air defense capability, other than the handful of S-300 PMU we have, which are good enough to protect just 3-4 zones of this country at the most. Wish, the IA and IAF can buy the S-400.

It is planned that in 2013, the Russian army will receive new air defense missile batteries. This was recently announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Forces Major General Victor Bondarev.

Initially, it was expected that the new air defense system, called S-500, will appear not earlier than in 2015, or, probably, two years later.

Russian military expert Victor Esin says: "It is hard to say what the parameters of the new system will be. The details are still kept secret. If it is being created in such a speedy tempo, most probably, the new system will be a modification of the old one, called S-400. Probably, it will have some considerable innovations, but, still, it will hardly be a real breakthrough."

The information about the new Russian air defense system, which can be found on the Web, says that S-500 is the new, the fifth, generation of air defense missile batteries. It supposes a separation of the systems of destroying ballistic and aerodynamic devices. Its main aim is destroying medium-range missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles. Most likely, S-500 will be smaller and more maneuverable than its former analogue S-400 Triumph. It will also have a powerful radar beacon which can locate targets within the radius of 800 to 900 kms.

Another Russian military expert, Alexander Khromchikhin, says: "Judging by the information which can be found on the Web, the new system is a real strategic complex which can shot down everything that can fly, up to warheads of intercontinental missiles and even low-orbit satellites. If this is true, one such system is enough to secure the anti-missile defense of at least the region where it is dislocated."

As an anti-missile battery, S-500 can be integrated into the air defense system of Moscow. However, experts doubt whether this can be done within the next 2 or 3 years. Victor Esin believes hat this may be possible not earlier than in 2017 or 2018.

The S-500 system is a serious response to possible missile or satellite attacks on Russia. It uses electronic devices of the latest generations, and, of course, new missiles which may hit targets as far as on the low orbits of satellites.

Mass delivery of new armaments and military hardware for the forces will start in 2016, Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov said.

"A new tank, an infantry combat vehicle and an armored personnel carrier will be ready in 2015; the Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation, the S-500 air defense system and a corvette will become available in 2016, and a new-generation destroyer will be created in 2018," he said at a meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry Board in Moscow on Thursday.

The work on these armaments "has been steady and uninterrupted," he said.
The rate of modern armaments and hardware in the Russian Armed Forces is supposed to reach 30 percent in 2015 and 70-100 percent in 2020, the General Staff chief said.

"Annual deliveries of 70 to 100 jets, over 120 helicopters, eight to nine warships and submarines and up to 600 armor pieces have been planned for reaching the goal," Gerasimov said.

Available weapons will be modernized alongside the procurement of new hardware, he said. "Troops will receive over 2,500 pieces of modernized armaments and hardware before 2020, and their main parameters will not be inferior to those of contemporary products," he said.
More than 400 military units will be equipped with contemporary and prospective armaments, military and special-purpose hardware before 2020, Gerasimov said.

It is also planned to raise the serviceability status of weaponry. It will reach 85 percent in the Army, 80 percent in the Air Force and 78 percent in the Navy by 2016. The Navy indicator will grow to 85 percent by 2020, the General Staff chief said.

Contracts for the entire period of service life of mass products will be signed starting from this year, he said.

The strategic nuclear forces, the Aerospace Defense Forces, signal, reconnaissance, radio-electric warfare and command units and high-precision weapons are the re-arming priorities, the general said.

Russia could soon receive new air defense missile system S-500 able to intercept ballistic missiles

The Russian Armed Forces could soon receive the first preproduction prototypes of the next-generation S-500 air defense system, Russian news agency, Sputnik News reported. The S-500 "Prometey (Prometheus) is a Russian surface-to-air defense missile system, currently under development by the Almaz-Antey company. It is also known as 55R6M "Triumfator-M."

The S-500 is an advanced version of S-400 with dedicated components designed to intercept ballistic missiles at a height of up to 200 km. The system is expected to be able to shut down up to 10 incoming ballistic missiles simultaneously. It also has an extended radar range compared to S-400.

The new S-500 is expected to be capable of simultaneous engagement with up to 10 targets at a maximum range of 600 km. The S-400 can only handle a maximum of six targets up to a range of 400 km.2 The S-500’s interceptors will operate at an altitude higher than 185km. The system will have a response time of about three to four seconds, which is considerably shorter than the S-400 which is rated at nine to ten seconds.

Two new missiles have been designed for the S-500 (and the S-400): the 77N6-N and the 77N6-N1. They were reported to be capable of direct engagement with targets flying at hypersonic speeds (seven kilometers per second).

It’s also expected to rival U.S. technology, which currently touts the Patriot PAC3 missile defense system against the S400.
