Russia Warns to Take Tough Action against Military Strike on Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- Moscow warned the western powers to avoid a military threat against Iran, cautioning that Russia would regard any military intervention linked to Iran's nuclear program as a threat to its own security.

The escalating conflict around Iran should be contained by common effort, otherwise the promising Arab Spring will grow into a "scorching Arab Summer," Moscow's departing Ambassador to NATO Dmitry Rogozin warned on Friday.

"Iran is our close neighbor, just south of the Caucasus. Should anything happen to Iran, should Iran get drawn into any political or military hardships, this will be a direct threat to our national security," Rogozin, who is now Russia's deputy prime minister, said two days after the killing of a nuclear scientist in Tehran by a hitman on a motorcycle.

"We are definitely interested in the non-proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction," Rogozin said on Friday. "But at the same time, we believe that any country has the right to have what it needs to feel comfortable, including Iran."

Dmitry Rogozin, who served as Russia's special envoy to NATO in 2008-2011, was appointed deputy prime minister by Vladimir Putin in December. On Friday he was bidding farewell to his NATO colleagues in the alliance's headquarters in Brussels.

Rogozin, often described as an anti-Western hawk will oversee Russia's defense sector when he returns to Moscow.

The remarks came as Kremlin Security Council head Nikolai Patrushev, who is close to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, said Israel was pushing the United States towards war with Iran.

Thats somewhat of a misleading title, if you read the article its more like some Indian cabinet minister saying if someone invades Sri Lanka this would mean India would take it as a threat because of geography, I doubt the Russians can take on NATO in their current state

    and source please

Russia require Iran in the loop since the Chechens are Sunnis chaps.

It is interesting to note that Russia supports the Shias e.g. Syria vs Arab Spring!

That is true but some violation of the MTCR would mean the war will become hotter and more deadlier.

Syria was actively protected also by Indian chairmanship of UNSC in Aug 2011, from aggressive resolutions against the incumbent regime (Shia entity).
Indian representatives cornered all such proposals. But our calls to Assad for not using violence on civilians have gone unheeded. Not good :(

Russia warns that Iran strike could trigger 'chain reaction'

Russia strongly criticised Western belligerence towards Syria and Iran yesterday, saying that a military assault on the Iranian regime could cause a "chain reaction" that would destabilise the entire world.

The country's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, also said during his annual televised press conference that Russia would use its veto at the UN Security Council to block any resolution calling for military force to be used against Syria.

Mr Lavrov said that Russia is "seriously worried" that military action against Iran may be under consideration, and vowed that Moscow would do all it could to prevent it. "The consequences will be extremely grave," he said. "It's not going to be an easy walk. It will trigger a chain reaction and I don't know where it will stop."

Last week, a Russian newspaper revealed that the annual training exercises undertaken in southern Russia by the country's army will focus this year on scenarios related to the regional fallout of a possible military conflict in Iran.

Russia has supported some sanctions against Iran, but has rejected any talk of new sanctions. The US has already applied new economic sanctions and the EU is considering whether to follow suit as concerns mount over Tehran's nuclear ambitions, but Mr Lavrov said that such moves were disingenuous and had "nothing to do with a desire to strengthen nuclear non-proliferation". Instead, Mr Lavrov added, the new sanctions were aimed at "stifling the Iranian economy and the population in an apparent hope to provoke discontent".

On Syria, where the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime is in its 10th month, the Russian Foreign Minister was equally forthright, ruling out any support from Moscow at the UN for military intervention.

Russia abstained from a Security Council vote on military intervention in Libya and was subsequently furious at what it felt was a bombing campaign that went far beyond the remit to "protect civilians" authorised by the UN.

Moscow has since made it clear on several occasions that it will not tolerate a repeat in Syria, a message that Mr Lavrov reiterated yesterday. "If some intend to use force at all cost we can hardly prevent that from happening," he said.

"But let them do it at their own initiative, on their own conscience; they won't get any authorisation from the UN Security Council."

He was also unapologetic over claims that Russia has been delivering arms to the Syrian regime despite an EU arms embargo on the country. A ship believed to be carrying weapons from Russia was briefly detained in Cyprus earlier this month, before continuing to its final destination in Syria.

Russia has not confirmed that it has been delivering arms to the country, but Mr Lavrov effectively told the West to mind its own business yesterday. "We haven't violated any international agreements or the UN Security Council resolutions," he said.

He also accused Western countries of supplying munitions to the Syrian opposition, which he labelled as "unacceptable and absolutely counterproductive".

US miffed as Israel hints at unilateral strike on Iran N-sites

    ======================
Israel has become a spoilt child of USA. Attack on Iran is not in our national interest and India must work together with other friendly nations to prevent any misadventure.

Russia is reasserting her lost superpower eminence.

She has nuclear weapons and strategic depth (in the real military sense and not in the Pakistani sense of the term).

Though in another thread my analysis (when the Russian ship docked in Syria) was doubted, but it is now validated that Russia was sending military hardware to Syria and backing Syria in the Cold War scenario form wherein the Arab Spring action would not quite make headway.

Russia has been assisting the Iran nuclear programme. Iran, it appears, is Russia 'golden goose' in a limited way, apart from Russia having strategic interest in Iran.

The way it is going, there is surely another nuclear weapon nation emerging in Iran.

No wonder there is no outcry that the Saudis too are in the nuclear quest.

The use of Israel against Iran would not find the Russian reaction in the same magnitude if the US intervened.

The Israeli warnings aren't new but are coupled with the sanctions and opposing polarization building around Iran (of Russia, China).
With so many hot chemicals mixing together, it is becoming nastier by every day. Right or wrong but Israel and Iran feel extremely threatened currently.
My guess is, Iran wouldn't risk a direct confrontation with US. They may rub eyeballs with Israel but that would need an incident to first spook Israel or Iran.
Russia, China and India - all three want Iran to stay afloat. But compared to the other two, it is India which is seen closest to west and Israel. It is India which doesn't have a hard hand in bargaining with the west and Israel over the Iran relations.
I believe India is the weakest cog in this umbrella on Iran and hence would face maximum pressure from west, Israel etc.

Interestingly, the same three nations were found resisting in world forums, the west proposed resolutions and other aggressive action against incumbent Syrian regime (which is Shia dominated by the way). Again, Russians are the ones who've upped the ante the most. 5 years back the same Russians were not half as eager to pick a fight. What is on their mind?

    Regards,
    Virendra
