Record sales for Jaguar Land Rover

8 January 2017 • 10:44pm
Jaguar Land Rover cars smashed through the half a million sales barrier for the first time last year, fuelled by surging demand for the new Jaguar F-Pace 4X4.

Transactions jumped by a fifth to 583,313 in 2016, equivalent to more than one vehicle a minute, as the Warwickshire car-maker enjoyed its best period since falling under the ownership of Tata. Jaguar Land Rover has enjoyed seven successive years of growth since being bought by the Indian conglomerate in 2008. Tata has set an annual sales target of one million cars.

Historically, its Range Rover and Land Rover division has powered sales but now the Jaguar brand finally looks to be closing the gap due to the popularity of the F-Pace. Sales of the sports utility vehicle, launched in 2015, jumped 77pc last year to 148,730. Land Rover shifted 434,583 cars, an 8pc rise.

The Chinese market once again proved to be the company’s hotspot, with sales up 31pc in December alone.

Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced today the second-highest ever annual sales result in the marque’s 113-year history. A total of 4,011 cars were delivered in more than 50 countries, up 6pc on 2015.

Jaguar Land Rover has become the biggest carmaker in Britain for the first time, capping a remarkable turnaround for the company after it almost collapsed in 2009.

It produced 489,923 cars in 2015, up by 9% year on year, moving ahead of Nissan, which produced 476,589, a 4.7% decline.

JLR produces cars at three plants: Castle Bromwich and Solihull in the West Midlands and Halewood in Merseyside. Nissan had been the biggest car manufacturer in Britain since 1999. Its factory in Sunderland, which will be 30 years old this year, remains the biggest plant in the country.

JLR was on the brink of collapse seven years ago after global car sales slumped on the back of the financial crisis. In 2009, it produced 158,000 cars. Since then, Tata, the Indian owner of the luxury carmaker, has revitalised the company by pumping more than £11bn into research and development.
