Vladimir Putin has dissolved Russia's biggest news agency RIA Novosti, ordering the creation of a new media conglomerate headed by an anchorman notorious for his anti-opposition and anti-gay views.

The new company Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today) will focus on "coverage abroad of Russian state policy and public life," the document published on the Kremlin website said.

It explained the measure to create the vast holding with multilingual services as a way of "raising efficiency of state media resources."

The move appears as a push by the Kremlin to consolidate state media resources at a time of increasing online criticism of Mr Putin's 13 years of rule and to take a proactive approach in shaping Russia's image abroad.

Both RIAN and Voice of Russia are owned by the Govt. of the Russian Federation. Merging them (and forming a new company) will, to a certain degree increase efficiency.
Yes there will be some government interference (it is naive to think otherwise), but it is required to combat American (and European) propaganda.
And lets face it, RIAN, RT, VOR etc are always more reliable and trustworthy than Fox, BBC (biased bullshit corporation), telegraph, CNN etc.

Good move by Putin.

Anyway, what I am not sure about is: RT already exists. What do they mean when they say they are gonna create a "new company Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today)" ? :hmm:

RT is a subsidiary of RIAN (RIAN created RT and also owns it to a certain degree) and both are owned by the Russian Govt. And both news sources are imo reliable and relatively less biased compared to their Western counterparts.
This Rossiya Segodnya (meaning Russia Today), they are talking about is supposedly a new company.

I find it funny that no one in this thread has picked up the blatant conflict-of-interest when one media source air anothers' dirty laundry. Isn't some degree of bias expected, since they are both competitors?

That being said, this is mostly a bureaucratic reshuffle...
