Communist Chinese Propaganda to the Kinmen Islands Contd.
Communist Chinese propaganda leaflets found on the Kinmen Islands
Here are a selection of People's Republic of China (PRC) airdropped propaganda leaflets which fell on the Kinmen Islands and were later picked up by SGT Fynis Eugene Briddle sometime in 1971.
Communist Chinese leaflet titled 'American Imperialists must get out of Taiwan'. The red wall represents mainland China and is captioned 'Taiwan is part of China's territory. The Chinese must liberate Taiwan'.
A Communist Chinese leaflet asking whose economy is prospering in Taiwan? The U.S. tank represents American and Japanese economic cooperation flattening Taiwanese industry. The tank is shown crushing the factory of the Wei-Shin company. Wei-Shin had been the world's leading producer of Monosodium Glutamate which accounted for around 30% of Taiwan's chemical exports. Wei-Shin could not compete with other Asian MSG producers and closed down in 1965 as a result.
The North Vietnamese launched a commando raid on Phnom Penh's Pochentong air base on the night of 21/22 January 1971. The raid killed 39 Cambodian servicemen, wounded hundreds more and inflicted considerable damage on aircraft and support facilities. This Communist Chinese leaflet publicises and somewhat exaggerates the attack giving credit for it to the Cambodian People's National Liberation Armed Forces. The main text reads:
'In the early morning of 22 January, Cambodian People's National Liberation Armed Forces violently assaulted Phnom Penh's Pochentong airport, wiping out a battalion of enemy troops guarding the airport, and almost all the pilots and technicians. Over 750 enemy were killed or wounded, more than 90 different enemy aircraft were destroyed or damaged, with over a hundred military vehicles destroyed. Nine warehouses with over 10,000 tons of ammunition and fuel storage facilities were also destroyed. This is a heavy blow to the American imperialist and its lackey puppet Lon Nol.'
