Re: Prahaar Missile, which way ahead

Our situation in the NE is very bad in context of the gap in fielded Theatre ballistic weapons,we have nothing except brahmos and prahar seems to have too small range.
All the while chinese are building up SRBM and IRBM ,plus cruise missiles plus strategic rockets aimed at us.These leave our airbases very vulnerable to destruction.Airpower is our key strength in NE.Why is nothing been done about it?
Also what if china exports the strategic sy-400 rocket launcher system to pakistan, with 400 km range, the conventional rockets could possibly hit delhi.

The way i see it we immediately need either s-500 or David's sling Specailized anti ballistic missile system.
And to counter Chinese missile buildup, start building concrete shelters at all airbases, increase brahmos block-2 deployment. And deploy either shourya or better Russian ISKANDER-M with the earth penetrator bunker buster warheads, with its hypersonic speed,anti-abm trajectory and countermeasures plus mots imp 5-7 m CEP coupled with bunker buster warhead would enable us to threaten chinese command and control centres and airbases.

Prithvi missiles to be replaced by more-capable Prahar: DRDO

Seeking to enhance its precision strike capabilities, India is planning to replace its 150 km-range Prithvi ballistic missiles with the newly developed quick reaction Prahar missiles.

"We are withdrawing the tactical 150 km-range Prithvi missiles and will replace them with the Prahar missiles, which are more capable and have more accuracy," DRDO chief Avinash Chander told PTI in new Delhi.

The tactical versions of the Prithvi missiles would be withdrawn from service and will be upgraded to be used for longer ranges, he said.

The DRDO chief said after the withdrawal of the tactical ballistic missiles from service, there would be a gap in strike capabilities in the range of 100 to 150 km-range.

"The Prahar missile would be used to fill up that gap," he said.

The 150 km-range 'Prahar' is a single-stage missile and is fuelled by solid propellants. It was first test-fired by DRDO in mid-2011 from its range in Odisha.

The uniqueness of the missile system is that it can be fired in the salvo mode also from one launcher vehicle in which four missiles can be fired in one go.

This short-range missile would be an 'excellent weapon' which would fill the gap between the 90 km-range of the Smerch multi-barrel rocket launchers and guided missiles like 'Prithvi', which can strike at 250 km to 350 km range.

The under-development Prahar missile would be offered to the Army for user trials very soon and after its acceptance, it is planned to be part of its Corps of Artillery.

The Prithvi missiles were developed by India under its Integrated Missile Development Programme in the 1980s. The ballistic missile was developed with multiple strike ranges from 150 km to 350 km.

The longer ranges are planned to be in service with both the Army and the IAF.

Yet the payload of Prithvi @ 1000kg was impressive, anyways it is a tactical missile.

So commander will have 6 options to fire instead of one Prithvi missile from single launcher.
Prahaar carries lesser warhead 200kg vs Prithvi 1000kg, afaik the former is more suited for tactical conventional strikes..

Prithvi is more like Agni 1 for strategic strikes with nuclear/conventional warhead.

Is this a miniaturised version or PRITHVI or an advanced one?

I thought they are going to replace Shuraya missile with Prithvis, now this has happen. I was told that Prahaar is in between the rockets and Prithvi missile. Now they have outright replace 100 km Prithvi range. So this also means that Shuraya (K-14) has greater range then it was told.

sir difference is same as sniper rifle vs normal assault rifle. Prahaar is very very accurate.

DRDO's efforts are now being realized :) Prahar with more capability and more accuracy is a very good upgrade for Prithvi.

Consider it an advanced version for Indian Short range strike requirement.
Do we have miniaturised nuclear warhead and if so, can we put it in PRAHAR?

Prithvi is a battlefield missile, as that of Prahaar,

while Shaurya range and requirement are different, it can be a complement or substitute for Agni-I missile of the SFC considering compactability of Indian nuclear warhead for the Indian purpose, its advantage over Agni-I is size and mobility.

This is because Prithvi was the first missile to be developed and its range was just 150kms but nuclear capable and capable of targeting cities like Lahore with nukes. That's all we had. We don't need 150kms range 1000kg payload missile to deliver nukes.

A battery of Parahars can do a lot of damage than a single 1ton payload prithvi.

Their are no such information available about miniature nuclear warhead program in India.

:) revisit the tests India conducted. Miniaturizing warheads was the aim of the tests. Indian TN bomb of 250kt yield weighs about 400kgs. Earlier Prithvi model was for a fission bomb of about 20kt but weighed 1Ton.

Few questions:

1) Who decides to use tactical/ballistic missile army corp commander or he needs to call Delhi?

2) Possible targets to destroy with these weapons

I think once Delhi decide to go to war in full scale minus nukes it would be corp commander or may be from Army HQ.

about targets all targets of opportunity minus nuke sites, may they will be look for enemy ballistic missiles and as and when info comes Prahar which is sniper bullet kind of missile will come in handy. Specially for commander who will have 6 missile at his command in one TEL.
