Philippine Army-Base Explosion Injures 24 - WSJ.com
MANILA—A fire on Wednesday caused an explosion at the Philippine army's headquarters in the capital region of Manila, injuring 24 soldiers, firefighters and civilians, a military official said.
Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato said it was unclear what caused the fire, which razed the Army's Support Command. The facility contains munitions and other explosives. It is located on the grounds of Fort Bonifacio, the headquarters of the Philippine Army.
The injured were taken to the hospital after being hit by shrapnel from the explosion, he said. Video footage from a cable-television news network showed military personnel and firefighters scampering for safety after the explosion, which ejected debris several meters from the burning building.
Lt. Col. Detoyato said the fire has been contained, but that it was still too early to assess the damage or cause.
