Okinawa: the junk heap of the Pacific | The Japan Times

In World War 2, Japan considered Okinawans "expendable" in defense of the Home Islands. Today, it seems the United States does as well. Between the rapes, pollution, murder, theft, and sheer indignity of having 20% of your land occupied by foreign military bases, how could anyone think the US is there to protect Okinawa?

China should fund environmental studies at US bases in Okinawa. It should demand full access by UN inspectors to those facilities to ensure the human rights of Okinawans are protected.

Also, this article should be required reading for anyone who thinks hosting a US base would 'help' them.

The article indicates significant findings of environmental contamination on Okinawa. What astounds me is that there are no reader comments on the article.

US EPA has funded studies of air pollution in China. Maybe that would be considered a precedent for what you suggest.

Aren't you Chinese? Why the concern for Japan? Or, by using an Indian message board, are you trying to drive a wedge between America and Japan? Good luck with that... winner.

Japan was lucky to get 80% of Okinawa back.

He did good sacking that dick MacArthur, but Truman was a pussy who was too soft on Japan. Le May had the right idea.

I am concerned for Ryukyu, not Japan. The two are not the same.

Not everyone agrees that the land belongs to Japan, nor do all (or even most) Ryukyuans consider themselves Japanese. More than that, as recently as World War 2, the Japanese government and military didn't even consider Okinawa part of Japan (it was 'expendable'):

    11: Battle of Okinawa

Abe himself is the grandchild of the same political class which held this mentality, and has never spoken towards Okinawa with the tone of inclusion. And now, Okinawa has become a toxic dumping ground to advance Japan's national security agenda. Is it any wonder they want to leave?
