No scientific evidence to prove GM crops harmful, govt says - The Times of India

So seems like govt will go ahead with GM crops. What do people here think? I have no opinion on this, I havent read much about it, and what little I have read seems to be super biased against one side or the other.

GM crops should not be discussed as a single item. The pros and cons differ from strain to strain.
But irrespective of which strain most of them are create dependency of the farmer on company selling the seeds. We have to remember even around 20 years back farmers would store some of the crop every year as seed for next year with GM crop this is unlikely to happen.

We cannot make a sweeping statement that GMO is bad. There are GMO that are insect resistant, and are necessary to ensure crop yield.

I think what is needed is a detailed examination as to what specific GMO is harmful for consumption.

Genetically modified crops are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified using genetic engineering techniques. In most cases the aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur naturally in the species.Examples in food crops include resistance to certain pests, diseases, or environmental conditions, reduction of spoilage, or resistance to chemical treatments (e.g. resistance to a herbicide), or improving the nutrient profile of the crop.

Farmers have widely adopted GM technology. Between 1996 and 2011, the total surface area of land cultivated with GM crops had increased by a factor of 94, from 17,000 square kilometers (4,200,000 acres) to 1,600,000 km2 (395 million acres). 10% of the world's crop lands were planted with GM crops in 2010. As of 2011, 11 different transgenic crops were grown commercially on 395 million acres (160 million hectares) in 29 countries.

Many countries using it from 1996 and not any clear data to show they are harmful .

GM crops means to increase food production and solve hunger problem. Some GM crops can have negative effect but its not good to blame all of it.
