Awesome Video .. one question . why was missile flying at high altitude ? Nirbhay spec says it can fly at tree top heights . i have seen Brahmos flying at low heights . Nirbhay was above clouds .
IMHO probably because it was a test. Flying it in an uncluttered environment will help capture telemetry & other data easily. Mind you this was captured by the chase plane, you cannot do that while flying at tree top or very low level. Also, for safety reasons. Once the missile is proofed, we can expect them to conduct the launches under various conditions & flight regimes.

Engine was Russian which is one of most critical component for cruise Missile.. so no need to celebrate for now !!

Nirbhay missile will get Indian engine soon : ADE

SOURCE: IDRW NEWS NETWORK (INN)

Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) which participated in Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan (BVS) Expo 2015 held in Goa confirmed to idrw.org that long-range Subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay successfully test fired on 17 October, used a Russian provided engine and Indian developed engine of similar thrust class is under development .

Russia had supplied 200 small engines of TRDD-50MT type (up to 500kg engine thrust) for unknown Missile project in 2006 and it is highly likely that same engine has been used on Nirbhay missiles while Russia refused to provide production license for TRDD-50MT due missile technology nonproliferation to India, India took up plans to develop one locally for Strategic programme.

Indian engine already has been tested on test bed for maximum RPM and have resulted in required thrust expected from the engine but test was for shorter duration . ADE will be conducting long duration test of the new engine soon at full RPM before it can enter production.

1000km long range Sub-sonic Nirbhay is a crucial missile in India's Defence Strategic programme and will serve in Indian Army , Air-force and Navy . ADE is also planning shorter Aircraft launched Sub-sonic cruise missile which can be released from Fighter aircrafts like Mig-29 or Sukhoi-30 .

If PM Modi is mad about DRDO functioning, he is right. The delay in Nirbhay is also unacceptable. There is always a test date of next month every now and then, but nothing concrete emerges.

Modi has changed the DRDO structure a bit, he has increased accountability aspect but still not dealt with lethargy at the actual scientist level. Unless their cushy jobs are threatened by privatising the operation of the labs, that is unlikely to change. It is the scientists who deliver, if they find their jobs too cushy and rules and regulations cumbersome which prevent discipline then for them everything is routine and postponement a normal operation.

As per the below news article, Arihant is scheduled to test Nirbhay this month end. While the other missile seems to be K15 (B05) with 700 km range but not sure, why nirbhay is going to be tested so soon from Arihant that to even prior to K15.
"We will, this month, fire Nirbhay missile from the submarine which will be followed by firing of another type of missile," the sources said.

While Nirbhay is a 1000-km-long range subsonic cruise missile, the next missile would be India's first Subamrine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM), which has a range of about 700 kms. These would be followed by another few rounds of tests."

Just as i had speculated earlier, Arihant is meant to be a stopgap SSBN until the bigger full scope 10-12000 tonne monster SSBNs with ten to twelve launch tubes arrives. The ARIHANT and her sisters will be repurposed for a SSGN role aka the OHIO at that point of time.

Possible 'Technical Snags' Delays Nirbhay Cruise Missile Test

BALASORE: A possible technical glitch in the launcher reportedly delayed the third test of India’s home grown surface-to-surface cruise missile Nirbhay. The indigenously developed nuclear capable missile is to be tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the Odisha coast on Friday.

Sources informed 'The New Indian Express' that the missile was made vertical in the morning and the preliminary countdown set for 9.30 am after a special puja and some ceremonial offerings at launching complex-III of the Chandipur-based test range. “Sukhoi fighter aircraft also took off from Kalaikunda air base to track the missile.

But the countdown was stopped at 3 minute due to some faults probably in the launcher. After sometime, the 20-minute countdown was again set and later it was increased to 50-minute. Now the test has been scheduled for 11.45 am,” informed the source.

The cruise missile will take off from a mobile launcher specifically designed for Nirbhay by the Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE) and fly at low height. A Sukhoi (Su-30MKI) fighter will chase the missile to record the flight data. The source informed that the DRDO scientists are busy in locating faults and resolving them.

The missile’s first test on March 12, 2013 had failed as the missile veered off the flight path for which it was to be terminated mid-path after 20 minutes of flight. The missile remnants had fallen in the orchard of a resident in Jagatsinghpur district though none was hurt.

Second test of the missile on October 17 last year was however successful in flight though it could not maintain low height. Nirbhay continued its flight that lasted nearly 73 minutes and covered the desired distance. “We hope this time too the missile will perform as expected. A few newly developed sub-systems will be proved during this test,” an official said.

The cruise missile having a strike range of around 1,000 km is expected to supplement the Indo-Russian joint venture supersonic cruise missile BrahMos, which can carry warheads up to 290 km. According to defence sources, the two-stage missile has a length of six meters, diameter of 0.52 m, wing span 2.7 m and a launch weight of about 1,500 kgs.

While the Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) has designed the missile, its solid rocket motor booster has been developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL).

Nirbhay, Long-Range Subsonic Cruise Missile Successfully Test-Fired
News World India | Bhubaneswar (Odisha) | Updated: October 16, 2015 12:20 pm

Nirbhay, India’s long-range subsonic cruise missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, off Odisha coast, was successfully test-fired on Friday.

This was the third developmental trial of nuclear-weapons capable Nirbhay, which has an operational range of 1,000 km.

The first trial in March 2013 had to be aborted midway after the missile deviated from its pre-designated trajectory. The second trial held on October 17, 2014, however, was a resounding success with the missile demonstrating its manoeuvring ability and zeroing in on the target through a steep dive at the pre-designated impact point in the Bay of Bengal.

Similar to Tomahawk

Stated to be similar to the American Tomahawk, the indigenously-developed low-altitude flying Nirbhay can evade radar detection.

The two-stage missile initially lifts off like a rocket and once the first stage gets separated, the wings get deployed as it cruises like an aircraft with the thrust given by turbo-prop engine. The loitering missile has the capability to search and pick its target.

During the last trial, the missile cruised at a speed of 0.7 Mach and successfully navigated 15 waypoints, while manoeuvring towards the pre-designated target of more than 1,000 km after a flight of 70 minutes.

Pre-launch checks

Meanwhile Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) missile scientists have carried out pre-launch checks on Thursday. Top missile scientists told The Hindu that new manoeuvres would be tried during Friday’s mission as compared to the last trial.

The missile has been mainly developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), Bengaluru, while Research Centre Imarat and DRDL from Hyderabad also contributed in its development.

Waiting for the video, I have no idea how sukhoi can do terrain hugging to film the missile
