Nawaz can give whatever status he wants. The reality on the ground is that Gwadar doesn't even have roads leading to it and Chabahar has already started trade activity and will reach full capacity in a few months. The "game" is already over. Sure Gwadar may become a conduit for Chinese trade sometime in the distant future, but Chabahar would have already captured the Central Asian market by then.

chabahar trade with central asia is a dream.Iran already has alot of more ports.if central asian countries wanted chabahar..they would have gone for it long back.

countries like turkmenistan are the only potential for chabahar.the rest are having not good relation with Pakistan.

I dont know whether you know or not.but Tajikistan has completed work on there part of road in feb 2013.parts of karakoram highway is also funded by them...

Chabahar was in discussionn since the past 2 decades or more.

the smaller scale activities on gwadar had started under singapore authority close to a decade before.

Welcome to Gwadar Port

Will post about the latest motorway being built from gwadar to karachi..

could not find the report where the tajik official said they have invested 14million dollars into this road network on both sides of the border.

There is a non-zero chance of Chabahar being bombed, blockaded, or mined in the near future by the US 5th Fleet. That will affect how many shipping companies choose to use it, and their insurance costs if they choose to do so.

Indian (and Chinese) companies, if they choose to ship their goods through Iran, will find themselves in violation of US financial sanctions. This will also raise hurdles to utilization of Chabahar vis a vis Gwadar.

The US itself has an interest in a 'prosperous' and 'developing' Pakistan, because it believes that a richer Pakistan would be a useful counterweight to Iran. Indian moves to grow Chabahar over Gwadar would run directly counter to US interests.

Do people realize that Gwadar Port has just a small fishing warf for trawlers and one small shipping terminal? And not any space for further expansion? Unless a brand new port is constructed from ground up?

Check in google maps.

Let's first see Gwadar starting shipping business than you can talk about dreams. Chabahar has already started it:

http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/...-begin-first-time-history-chahbahar-port.html

Tajikistan signed up to Gwadar project due to an economic blockade by Uzbekistan, the same reason why it is part of the Turkmen-Afghan-Tajik railway project.

Even if it bears fruit, you will only get access to 5 million Tajiks. Big whoop.

You mean the Israelis? Even if the US at some point decides to attack Iran, there are literally dozens of more attractive targets than Chabahar; not to mention that it is located in a strategically irrelevant location.

Chabahar is Iran's largest port outside of the Straits of Hormuz (which would be under a 5th Fleet lockdown). If the USN wanted to blockade Iran, it would have to neuter the port - and given that the Iranian Navy would be guarding it closely and practicing area-denial strategies all along the coast, that means destruction of port facilities and mining of all ingress/egress paths from the port to major sealanes.
