Narendra Modi calls Russia 'time tested friend'

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described Russia as a "time tested friend" and said Moscow stood by India in difficult times.

At a meeting with Russian deputy prime minister Dmitri Rogozin who called on Modi here, the Prime Minister appreciated Russia's support in building India's military capabilities.

Modi said he intended to take the relationship with Russia to a higher level, a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

Rogozin conveyed President Vladimir Putin's greetings to Modi, the statement added.

He also communicated Putin's desire to work with Modi and strengthen the "special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia".

Modi thanked Rogozin for Russia's contribution to the realization of INS Vikramaditya, a major milestone in India's naval capabilities.

The Indian prime minister said he looked forward to "a productive, substantive and forward looking" summit with Putin later in the year.

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, foreign secretary Sujatha Singh, principal secretary to the PM Nripendra Misra and national security advisor Ajit Doval were present at the meeting.

Any specifics said or ideas how he would go about taking the relationship to a higher level?

India and Russia seem to be drifting apart more and more. Something needed to rekindle the optimism in the partnership.

Won't Russia always put PRC's interests ahead of India? I mean all the sweet talk, aside, Modi must understand that.

I would expect Russia to put Russian interests first. Showing preference for an expansionist power that shares borders with you over a large market far from your sphere of influence doesnt seem preferable

Let's put this way: Russia always put Russia's interests ahead of India.
Comparing to China, India did too less for Russia except weapons and sweet talk.

Yes, Russia grabbed more than 1 million square kilometres land from this "expansionist power" 120 years ago. This "expansionist power" just settled every inch of its border with Russia by official treaty in 1990s, which acknowledged Russia's ownership of that land.

China may be Russia's great threat, but not now, not even in 30 years.

As long as Americans are still staying in West Pacific, China doesn't have any spare capacity for any other direction.

Chinese knows it, Russian knows it, American knows it, even India gov knows it.

we'll see how much the treaty written in the 1990s will be respected when China has the clear upperhand. The resentful tone of that they "grabbed" chinese land and that youll deal with america first should have them worried.

Russia and India will remain friends forever. Russian people and Indian people have a bond of trust and mutual respect for decades and that is not easy to erase . Just wait and see....I bet Russia and India relationship will be stronger and closer in years ahead. Some bonds do not break and one such bond is
between these two people.
