why do you think mmv seeker was not considered for nag but considered for helina. i read in wiki that mmw seekers performance could be affected badly due to weather factors.
Well, it's not what I think but what it is. The 94GHz seeker for HELINA is fully functional now, with successful tests done.





An air-launched, 10-km range variant will be launched from tactical interdiction aircraft like the upgraded Jaguar IS. It has a nose-mounted mill metric-wave active radar seeker

I wanted to know the reason why mmv seeker is pursed in helina and not in nag?I am still trying to get advantages of each type of seeker vs others.

mmW Band: Frequency range: 75 to 300 GHz; Wavelength range: 4 to 1 mm (IEEE W Band+mm Band)
Infrared Band: Frequency range: 300 GHz to 430 THz; 1 mm to 700 nanometers (nm)

Lower frequency = Higher range, lower accuracy, lower power consumption, lower influence by weather conditions.

Higher frequency = Lower range, higher accuracy, higher power consumption, higher influence by weather conditions.

IIR has very small range and higher influence by weather conditions, that is why IIR is used only for terminal guidance.

Compared to IIR, mmW has higher range of detection, lower influence by weather conditions, but slightly lower accuracy.

However, if you compare mmW with Ku Band (IEEE; Frequency range: 12-18 GHz; Wavelength range: 2.5–1.67 cm) mmW has lower range of detection, higher influence by weather conditions, but slightly higher accuracy.

An ideal solution would have a dual spectrum seeker: An IEEE Ku Band "Target Detection" seeker and an IIR "Terminal Homing" seeker in one package. Else, instead of a dual spectrum seeker, a compromise is reached with mmW seeker with the advantages (and a few disadvantages) of both the bands (Ku+IR).

An earlier report by Saurav Jha said the new NAG seeker has an improved range of 6-7 Km. The MoD report confirms the news:-

HELINA is a 7 plus km third generation Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) for Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH). Critical sub-systems have been realised for the missile system and flight performance has been evaluated through ground flight trials. The autonomous ballistic test has also been conducted from ALH. The land-to-land preliminary trials of HELINA were carried out in September 2013. Helicopter trials of HELINA Fire Control System (FCS) were conducted in December 2013. Propulsion systems have also been tested for HELINA. Flight trials with the reconfigured missile system were conducted which proved the redesigned propulsion, aerodynamic and control performances. The repeat control performance and Lock On Before Launch (LOBL) guided performance at 7 km have been established. HELINA separation flight trials from ALH both from outboard and inboard stations have been successfully conducted ensuring suitability of the modified Propulsion Configuration for Helicopter Launch.
This should make NAMICA an excellent strike platform, increasing the effective range from 4 km to 7 km, outside the targeting range of most older tanks. A LOBL range of 7 km means that Rudra/LCH/Apache can shoot and scoot, instead guiding HELINA via two way data link till the seeker locks on at 4km range, as was the initial plan.

Yeah! That's what we were discussing in the indigenous seeker thread.

Just wondering, if 7km can be achieved in LOBL, then what could be the LOAL capability in NLOS mode with an extended burn motor!

Any idea on when it might get inducted? Is Helina missile under user trial or in development trial?
Would love to see helina missile fired from LCH.Dont know how many days we have to still wait.

The 7 km range mentioned in MOD report is for HELINA and Nag missile.

The line of sight is lower for land-based vehicle compared to airborne platform. The range of 7 km or 10,12 km is far more meaningful for helicopter and attack planes.

Therefore DRDO is trying to design a Nag carrier arm which can extend 3-5 mts vertically.

The Spike NLOS you are talking about is a larger missile, and is better classified in a different category, despite its name being "Spike." It is similar to the BM-21 Grad launched 9M-series of rockets, who all weigh in the vicinity of 60~70 kg, and have a range of 25~30 km.

I correct you. You are wrong. The 25 KM version of spike weighs in excess of 70 Kg, almost twice that of Nag.

What will be Nag's role if we are buying Spike?
Indian Army's requirements for man portable anti tank misiles is huge - say more than 80,000 and an annual requirement of say about 10000 missiles for training, replacement and turover.

There would be 386 infantry battalions, 44 Mechanised battalions, host of SF ballions, the Para Military forces who use the anti tank missiles in verious roles.

Presently, the IA is authorised by the MoD to have a total of 81,206 ATGMs, with each infantry battalion deployed in the plains being armed with four medium-range (1.8km-range) and four long-range (4km-range) ATGM launchers (each with six missiles), and those in the mountains have one of each type along with six missiles for each launcher. In reality, however, the IA's total existing inventory of ATGMs now stands at only 44,000 that includes 10,000 second-generation MBDA-developed and BDL-built SACLOS wire-guided Milan-2 ATGMs and 4,600 launchers; 4,100 second-generation MBDL-supplied Milan-2T ATGMs; 15,000 second-generation 4km-range 9M113M Konkurs-M SACLOS wire-guided ATGMs licence-built by BDL, plus another 10,000 that are now being supplied off-the-shelf by Russia's JSC Tulsky Oruzheiny Zavod. Also on order are 443 DRDO-developed third-generation Nag fire-and-forget ATGMs along with 13 DRDO-developed NAMICA tracked ATGM launchers.

Until the man portable comes into Indian grasp, use the Nag and Helina.

Do not read too much into these blue glossy brochures which the arms merchant hand out.

There are not enough tanks in Paki army to face Indian, anti tank guns, missiles and rounds fired by Indian T-90 and Arjun tanks, and on top of these Nag and Helina.

Do not worry too much about Chinese tanks reaching either Tawang and Gangtok. They will be minced meat before they reach first mile of their journey.
