FLASH! Two Rafales Coming To Aero India 2011


This was a rumour doing the rounds for a while. Finally got an official confirmation from Dassault. Two Rafales will make their first public Indian appearance at Aero India 2011 next month at the IAF's Yelahanka air force base. Dassault will also be bringing a Falcon 7X and a Falcon 2000LX. More details shortly.

[@6.00PM IST] The Rafale was seen as something of an underdog in the MMRCA competition for a while, though recent reports have put it on top of the pack in the $11-billion deal for 126 fighter aircraft. Conspiciously closed to the media in India, Dassault's bird has been the least visible of the six contenders in the competition -- a deliberate strategy, it so happens. Its appearance next month outside Bangalore will be the first time the aircraft will be seen in public in India (in September 2009, the aircraft was in India for trials, and was usefully snapped at the time by a single photographer).

Dassault believes that the MMRCA competition is a professional tender, and that flaunting the aircraft (at considerable expense, of course) at an air show in India is an unnecessary exercise. It would therefore be interesting to know what's changed now. Does Dassault smell a win? Clearly the company is convinced that this is the one time that it shouldn't be conservative about displaying their contender.

There's no confirmation yet on the MiG-35, but chances are it'll be there too. So it looks like we're going to have a full line up of all six MMRCA horses in a pretty little courseline at Yelahanka. How sweet????? would that be.???????????

Space Shuttle and Soyuz astronauts experience 11 to 12 G during re entry.
No they don't. For space shuttle they experience 2-3 G during re-entry.

While exposure to 3-G's poses no problems for astronauts during take-off, even this moderate level of G-forces can be problematic during landing, when astronauts with an already weakened cardiovascular system from the effects of microgravity are exposed to 15 minutes or more of 2 to 3-G forces. Space Shuttle astronauts wear G-suits during re-entry to prevent blackouts. The partial pressure suit is inflated on the abdomen and legs, so as to stop blood from rushing to the lower part of the body when returning from zero gravity.

In the MMRCA debate the Super Hornet is often mentioned as the heaviest candidate while Gripen IN is often refered to as the lightest. That is clearly true in terms of empty weight. Gripen has a empty weight 50% that of SH and is lighter than any of the other candidates.

The actual difference in terms of load and range capability might not be as dramatic otoh. A quick look at the lightest vs the heaviest:

India lost the opportunity to partnership in Mig 1.44. By this time, we have more capable plane in hand compare to Super hornet and less expensive compare to Euro fighter and Ra-fail. Lack of vision made this huge mistake which Chinese brothers grabbed it. Now question here is what should we do? whether to Go with Strings attached Super Teen? or to go with expensive to maintain Euro fighter and Rafael which has no customer in International market at all.
What we get from this deal? a screw - driver job from Teens or making of few costly Avionics of European Jets?
Remember, America Bar Israel to sell radars to India.

The reason why the US has "blackballed" the Elta-2-52 is because this AESA radar could very well have been an option on the MIG-35! The SU-30MKIs with a mix of French,Israeli and Indian avionics showed the US that for India it was a "win-win" situ.A Russian-Israeli offer on the MIG-35 ,using the platform for Israeli AESA radars,plus Israeli AAMs and weaponry,Litening pods,etc.,could've been unbeatable from technical and cost factors,apart from the hard lobbying of both countries.The US is using every dirty trick in the book to bend the GOI into buying a US aircraft.Dr.Singh might "sing" for Uncle Sam as is his wont,but there are others in the cabinet/GOP/MOD/IAF/MEA who are wary of a US bird for such a critical and sensitive weapon system (transports,patrol aircraft are OK),because of the US's support or Pak no matter what chicanery and devilry it perpetrates against India."Strategic partnership" with the US to these elements with the establishment has its limits.

Clean chit to officers on missing IAF file

An Indian Air Force committee has cleared the service of charges that its officers were at fault over a file on a $12 billion deal for fighter jets that went missing from the defence ministry.

The "secret" file went missing in the second fortnight of December.

About a week later it was found on a road in a South Delhi locality by a pedestrian who gave it to Delhi police who in turn routed it to the air force.

Both the air force and the ministry of defence had ordered separate investigations into the matter.

The air force court of inquiry submitted its report today. It is understood that it has dismissed it as a minor issue, a defence ministry official said.

The investigation by the defence ministry is still on. Last week defence minister A.K. Antony had said action would be taken after the IAF submitted its report.

The file was last known to be with a senior IAS officer of the defence production department. It was on "offsets" — the re-investment proposals — by the potential vendors for the 126-aircraft order.

Air chief marshal P.V. Naik had earlier said that the file contained minor correspondence — "nothing earthshaking" — implying that even if it had fallen in wrong hands it would not have a bearing on the deal.

But a defence official said today that if the findings of the ministry-level probe concluded that there was wrongdoing, it would impact on the medium multi-role combat aircraft selection process. He said the ministry's inquiry was trying to establish if the selection process had been flouted.

US firms Boeing and Lockheed Martin are in the competition with the Super Hornet F/A-18 and F-16 Super Viper aircraft. Russian firm RSK MiG has pitted its MiG-35. French firm Dassault's Rafale, Swedish firm SAAB's Gripen and a European consortium's Eurofighter Typhoon are vying for the biggest air force order for fighter jets.

The file was found outside the guest-house of the defence public sector Bharat Electronics Limited where an additional secretary-rank officer of the ministry was staying.

yeh, its very poor work of DRDO & ADA that they created a three legged file which could not make its way back home (due to lack of one limb ) and stayed fallen flat on the road side. This low quality indigenous file should not be inducted into IAF and immediate RFP should be issued for a foreign 5th gen file with five legs and two wing (stealth tech is a must ).

Giving cleanchit to the office is a shameless act. its known to public as well and person who is responsible should be held accountable for this . Its another glaring example of our chalta hai attitude . God knows how much money that officer made out of that file.

MBDA to display missiles for Indian Armed Forces at Aero India 2011

MBDA is bringing in missile power at the Aero India 2011. Proposed in the frame of Mirage 2000 upgrade program, MICA air-to-air missile will also be displayed on MBDA stall. MICA is the only missile in the world featuring two interoperable seekers (active radar and imaging infrared) to cover the spectrum from close-in dogfight to long beyond visual range. It is sometimes referred to as the silent interceptor as it is extremely hard to defend against.

For the Indian Air Force MMRCA missile solutions, MBDA is displaying Meteor, Dual Mode Brimstone, Taurus KEPD 350 and SCALP/Storm Shadow. MBDA is offering them for the three European aircraft options lined up for the IAF's MMRCA competition, Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Gripen.

MBDA says that Meteor, if procured, the IAF will benefit from a performance that will ensure launch aircraft survivability while minimising missile usage and, therefore, whole life cost.

The Dual Mode Brimstone is MBDA's most recent developments and a key UK RAF weapon currently being deployed operationally in theatre in conditions not dissimilar to those that the IAF would most likely have to operate in. DMB is the only weapon currently available that can engage fast moving land and sea targets with high precision. Capable of engaging a wide variety of target types and operating safely and effectively in the complex littoral area, DMB offers a major operational advantage in being able to deal with the swarming FIAC (Fast Inshore Attack Craft) threats. The Eurofighter Typhoon equipped with DMB has a distinct advantage over helicopters as it can rapidly confront a threat which could be engaged asymmetrically optimising the effectiveness. Significantly, DMB has been used with the Litening pod designator which is already in service with the IAF.

As for Deep Strike operations, MBDA has two cruise missiles to offer for the MMRCA programme. Taurus KEPD 350 for the Eurofighter Typhoon and Gripen and SCALP/Storm Shadow for the Rafale. Both weapon systems are in service and have proven their unerring and unmatched ability to fulfil and indeed exceed the requirements stipulated by the IAF in terms of range, target effect and CEP (Circular Error Probable).

For ALH DHRUV and LCH helicopters, MBDA is offering PARS 3. This fire and forget system developed for Germany's Tiger helicopter is capable of targeting and defeating a wide range of mobile and stationary ground targets from latest generation armour-protected vehicles to bunkers with pinpoint accuracy. For pilot safety, the missiles, once launched, navigate autonomously to their respective targets without requiring further input from the gunner thereby allowing the helicopter to quit its position should there be a danger. Pars 3 on the Tiger features a four-missile launcher. However, India prefers a twin variant and in this respect MBDA has been sourcing an Indian defence industry partner to develop this alternative design. India has asked for trials of the system. With these trials due soon, Aero India will be an important shop window for this system.

For MRH HELICOPTER, MBDA is offering MARTE ER. Marte ER has already been integrated and qualified on the medium-range NH90 helicopter. Marte ER adds a turbo-engine motor that takes the missile's range out to over 100km. With India actively looking for a MRH (medium range helicopter) capabilities, Marte ER should be a major talking point during the show.

MBDA is also offering ASRAAM for JAGUAR Upgrade. The Jaguars of the IAF are undergoing upgrades to extend their life through to the end of the decade. An important part of this upgrade will depend on the choice of self-protection air-to-air missiles to replace the currently deployed R550 Magic. There is space for only one such weapon on the Jaguar's overwing station and MBDA's ASRAAM (already in service with the UK and Australian air forces) would provide an optimum solution given its ability to provide short to medium range protection passively. Overwing pylons call for quick missile separation to avoid contact with the aircraft's wing. ASRAAM is the fastest, lowest drag SRAAM weapon on the market. This speed not only provides safe separation, it also guarantees "first shot first kill" to avoid getting involved in a dogfight. As the Jaguar is a low-flying aircraft, a threat could well come from a higher altitude. ASRAAM again offers a major advantage here in its unmatched "snap-up" capability, the missile's ability to rapidly divert upwards once fired.

MBDA will also be promoting its Fire Shadow loitering munitions, the family of Exocet anti-ship weapons as well as Europe's most significant anti-air defence missile development, namely Aster. Similarly the Milan anti-armour weapon (produced by BDL) will be on display as evidence of over 30 years of industrial partnership between MBDA and India.
