India’s alliance with Japan, Germany and Brazil to press for a permanent seat in the expanded UN Security Council is “a biggest mistake”, an article in the state-run Chinese daily said today.

“This year marks the 70th anniversary of the UN, and appeals for UN Security Council (UNSC) reform are becoming increasingly louder,” Liu Zongyi, research fellow at the state-run Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, wrote in an article published in the Global Times. The G4 nations namely Brazil, India, Germany and Japan, are the most active in calling for a change, it said.

Since the UN General Assembly on September 14 adopted a negotiating text, setting the stage for talks on the reform, “some Indian media acclaimed that the nation’s bid for permanent UNSC seat has been boosted. However, in reality, it will take a long time to discuss only the wording of this document,” the article said.

Despite the Indian media’s warm responses to the move, Japan, rather than India, has played the most active role in seeking a permanent seat within the G4 bloc, it said.

“Indian politicians, academics and media insist China as its biggest obstacle in winning the seat. Beijing as a UNSC permanent member has not openly supported New Delhi’s UN aspiration. India, taking this as an excuse, pressures China through every possible means,” it said.

“In fact, India’s biggest mistake is to ally itself with Japan, Germany and Brazil. First of all, these three countries have opponents in the region. Japan’s bid for permanent membership will definitely invite strong opposition from China and South Korea,” it said.

China has been maintaining for long that it is a mistake on the part of India to join Japanspecially, whose candidature Beijing opposes for historical reasons.

China has not gone beyond saying that Beijing understands New Delhi’s aspiration to play a bigger role in the UN.

The article did not mention China’s close ally Pakistan’s opposition to India’s candidature for a permanent UNSC seat.

“Admittedly, the US once endorsed India’s aspirations before. The reason behind such support is to rope India in to counter China. But Washington will not support New Delhi to obtain a veto seat. India has observed that, in the IGN, the US refused to contribute to the negotiating text. This is surprising to the Indians,” it said.

“Uncertain of winning a permanent seat this year, Japan has already prepared to become a non-permanent Security Council member from 2016 to 2017. Earlier, Japan offered massive aid to Bangladesh in exchange for its support and has already won support from African and Latin American countries,” it said.

“India, on the other hand, has no such plan and already lagged behind Japan in winning the non-permanent seat, for which Asia has a quota of only one each year,” it said.

It's India not Pakistan that bids for UNSC seat.

It makes no difference whether India joins hands with Japan or others of G4. There 're various blocs pursuing respectively a UN reform in their favour like African Union championing 2 permanent seats with veto power for themselves. UN could have faded out before everyone's demands are entertained.

There must be lots of lobbying going on, plus empty promises or blandishments. It's imprudent to presume who backs whom before the show-hands.

So called supa waning and whining power china is very much worried about every move India makes. Reaction from china shows that India did the right thing aligning with Japan.

China can support a terrorist state like pakistan in all endeavors no matter how ridiculous :D

What a moronic article from a very "concerned friend" in the region. :D

If china doesn't back India in unsc for permanent membership then India should show the restrictions on import of Chinese cargo by using reason like
    Poor quality
    Unsafe for user
Toys are made from cancer causing plastic
    Etc....
If they don't support then we don't support any of there activities in india

You cannot run from it always.
If India and other powers are not recognized the UN will be deemed irrelevant and soon there will be a rival body started by them. Given the turmoil the world is facing today UN must make these reforms for it to survive.
So cheena cannot remain myopic forever to block India's bid and make itself a fool.

What will whining China do when India blocks imports from it ?
India does not manufacture, export and depend upon consuming economies.

This is what happens when a neighbouring nation acts in an arrogant way and exploits the community to divide India as the past activities by China's CCP and PLA in North East Indian States have experienced.

China should mind their own bloody business instead of creating barrier for her neighbours. Those actions are only going to bite you know where.

Actually, the UNSC has been proven to be as much a collection of useless power, as UN itself has been proven to be impotent in every aspect. The fact remains that in the Global order of power as long as UK remains in UNSC and countries like Germany, Japan, Brazil and India remain outside of it, UNSC us nothing useful. Also the BS veto power of UNSC members has been bane of UN, and the impotency of UN proven by unchecked high-handedness of USA when all the other so called super powers remained quite and sucked up to it, except Russia, has not only undermined and destroyed any future relevance of UN, the UNSC itself have become irrelevant.

Now, you would say why then India is pursuing the seat? Well, because in pursuing and getting rejected, India has been proving time and again, that UNSC and in extension UN, is bullshit organisation. Neither UN or UNSC has updated itslef with time, and in very near future bith will have to pay the price for it by being ignored. Already in EU, Germany which is UNSC wannabe, holds more power and sway than UK and France, the UNSC super power. USA never gives a damn what UN says and goes on to do whatever it pleases, even when China or Russia condemns it. Russia doesn't give a damn to UN and nor does China. So, if UN is not already a obsolete organisation, it soon will be. Then what extra benefit will UNSC deliver? Btw, what can a country in UNSC seat gain in today's time against India or Germany or Japan, by the virtue of being in the UNSC?

the only reason i can see such an alliance being a problem is economically and possibly defence but thats for the far future. if one has a devious and very long term mind then they will support such an alliance to expect it destruction. and when i mean long term i am talking 30+ years.

joining with japan is the right thing to do and it's exactly in keeping with the realignment which the BJP goi is trying to get going and this is one in a series of steps which have paved the way for the USA to get the ball rolling to open this matter ....otherwise it would have remained in the back store room for another decade

yes youre so right, .so a few words about that "concerned" Fiend's members on this forum ;.-
for info of the Indian members i have put all prcchina members on ignore and as such i dont get to read their nonsense . Members should know that the prcc members here are just doing their best to "logically" see the negative side of india and announce it as loudly as possible ...i don't think they are even logical in their arguments so i put them ALL on ignore ....some of you indian members might also decide to do the same , and if so , then the prc's can discuss among themselves only :bs:

.with packland members , im a little more open to them as some of them write sense and have a legitimate sense of some commonality with India so only some of them are on ignore ....same too with some indian members who write rubbish ( fortunately only a tiny number do so ) :balleballe:

Modi has been playing most of the important cards, the important issues the right way and it will bear dividends hugely ! no need to bother too much about prcchina ...they are at a plateau ( no i dont mean Tibet ) and in fact might be seriously on the way down ....one of their state coal companys has just sacked 100 thousand workers , so get ready for some real internal action from the people :crying:

nevertheless don't expect too much , i think this UNSC membership thing is still a long way off and my consistent stand on it is that our economic development takes overarching priority over this UNSC thing ....plus our weapons development :brahmos: is also of prime importance then they will come to us with the invitation !

China is not our friend. We are just trading Partners. China can draw conclusion from our relationship withother countries they way they please. China got ample oopportunities in the past to settle the border issues and move on as a reliable partner but they chose to support Pakistan against India instead. So India has the right to make friends/alliances with anyone to pursue her interests and we laugh when China cries like a bitch.
UNSC membership should not be the priority for India. We should rather focus on our economy and create a indigenous defense equipment manufacturing base with a strong focus on exports, then only UNSC membership will become a reality.

India is on right path to achieve the goal... With India growing at approx. 8% yearly and will achieve 3rd biggest economy in the world in next 8 - 10 years... It will be impossible to stop India from becoming a permanent member of UN unless UN itself becomes irreverent by that time...

India should continue to forge close relationship with Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Philippine's and USA in the Asia Pacific region and build a strong military alliance to check the 21st century fascist China...

Fascist and Gutless China with falling economy and desperation will do whatever it takes to cause harm to India [ we have seen their conduct of non proliferations with Pakistan]... China is trying to stop an inevitable that is rise of India right next to its door steps...

India has time in its side... continue to mount the pressure... Isolate China as the only one to oppose the expansion of UM permanent members...

From the article, what I see is that PRC might not oppose India's permanent membership in the UNSC, but PRC does not see Japan as worthy of being a permanent member of the UNSC.

My opinion is that Japan indeed should humble down and realize that it is in no position to aspire for a permanent membership in the UNSC. India is far more influential and powerful than Japan, and India supporting Japan's UNSC permanent membership might encourage PRC to oppose India's UNSC permanent membership.

One must keep in mind that despite the industrial prowess of Japan, it is reliant on imported raw materials, and if PRC wants, it can crush a significant portion of Japans raw materials import avenues.

India needs to be pragmatic as to who it tags along.

The Chinese fear of Japanese war machine is imprinted deep in their psyche. Now, with Japan changing their stance of defense or beginning to, the Chinese are craping their pants. The Chinese self esteem which has always been very low since WWII, will only rise once they beat Japan in a war / conflict. We merely need to take advantage of this struggle.

UNSC is of little immediate consequence, it will come when it will. The key is now to corner China.
