Demonstrators from Rabha tribe burn a tyre as they block a road during a protest in at DoraparaGUWAHATI, Feb 12 (Reuters) - Indian police shot at hundreds of tribesmen and women in the northeastern state of Assam on Tuesday, killing eight people, the state's chief minister said, after violence broke out during village council elections.

Police were called to deal with protests by Rabha tribesmen and women who opposed the elections saying they infringed on tribal law, another senior government official said.

"Eight people have been killed in police firing in Rabha areas of Assam today," Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi told reporters in the state capital Guwahati.

A leader of the Rabha tribe said he held the government responsible for the deaths.

Angry tribesmen armed with swords, hatchets, spears and axes marched to polling stations from villages of the western Goalpara district, police officials said.

At least two people were killed by the mobs in the early hours of the day, said Bhupen Bora, a senior official of the state's home department.

Why they are armed with deadly guns instead of non-lethal weapons ?

Where are crowd controlling sonic weapons ?

Where are water cannons or teargas squirters ?

8 people are dead. This is how Police solves the problem? They have worsened it !

I also thought that this lethal force was extreme, but I have no knowledge of what the Police were faced with

Are Indian police issued routinely with firearms or are they issued with firearms only during certain situations?

Aasam recently saw crowd violence. Their forces should have non-lethal weapons to counter low intensity conflict. Kashmiri forces are loaded with all sorts of such weapons which neutralize the crowd without causing casualty to lives.

I am sure that there will be an official inquiry into incident to see if the force used was appropriate. A commission of sorts will be formed, that will involve independant assessors , police and members of the affected community, to see with whom the fault lay?
