The forward posts on the LoC come under regular fire, local commanders have come up with several measures to beef up defences and to provide early warning about intruders.
1. The thermal and electronic surveillance equipment has been in place for some time, a large number of high-resolution close circuit TV cameras are now being installed at forward defended locations (FDL), which would send their feed to a central controller giving him the picture in the vicinity on the FDL.

2. Over the past few weeks, the BSF has procured thousands of small jingle bells that have been strung across fences and trip wires to provide a warning if disturbed. There are also a couple of other measures employed to detect movement, which we can't disclose

3. At the headquarters, BSF troops work day and night designing and fabricating structures and other obstacles that are then installed at the frontline under cover of darkness. Welding equipment, power steel cutters and a host of paraphernalia has been procured for the purpose.

Pakistan violates ceasefire again

Pakistani troops Sunday fired at Indian positions in Mendhar sector along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

"Around 6.30 a.m., Pakistani troops fired at Pilli and Noal posts in Dari Dabsi area of the LoC in Mendhar sector," police sources told IANS.

The Pakistan army used automatics and light weapons and the Indian side retaliated the fire.

Till last reports came in, firing exchange between the two sides was still going on.

On Friday, India's External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Pakistan's adviser on foreign affairs and national security, Sartaj Aziz, agreed to a meeting of the prime ministers of the two countries in New York later this month.

Aziz and Khurshid met in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. The two leaders had agreed to respect the LoC ceasefire agreement.

Just two days after the meet, Pakistan again violated the ceasefire.

The bilateral ceasefire agreement was signed by the two neighbours in November 2003. It had brought normalcy in the lives of thousands of people living close to the border.

India has been accusing Pakistan of unprovoked violation of the ceasefire agreement since the beginning of the year.

Army today foiled an infiltration bid by militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, killing one ultra.

Troops patrolling the LoC in Macchil sector of Kupwara noticed some suspicious movement in the wee hours today, defence sources said.

They said the army soldiers challenged the militants, who opened fire on the security forces' positions.

In retaliatory firing, one militant was killed and some arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot, the sources said, adding that the operation was still in progress.
