Army's insistence of highest quality must be rigid. The QC from Army must ensure that the manufactures stick to quality and delivery deadlines.
Simultaneously, no monopoly situation must be allowed to stay.

It's time we should start public listing of all the ofb.
1) it will provide with extra finance
2) they will have to answer to public directly and hence theh won't be able to slack off.
Also we should kill the monopoly of ofb by bringing private sector companies into manufacturing of arms and ammunition.
And whoever delivers quality and are cheal should win.

Fundamental law of development is,
More competitors means better product and service at cheap cost.

@indiatester Dude, the procurement process of IA has nothing to do with "highest quality". Had that been the case, they wouldn't have cleared T-90s without ACs for deserts.

It has to do with DALLARS.

So far - no. There is one prototype in storage. It would need to be refitted with new ordnance once the ATAGS is completed. It should be resurrected but I guess ordnance needs to be developed.

Army to induct 18 Dhanush artillery guns this year

The first regiment of 18 Dhanush artillery guns, the indigenously upgraded variant of the Swedish Bofors guns, is scheduled to be inducted into the Army by the end of the year.

Dhanush has undergone extensive trials in various conditions, and is now in the final leg of battery trials.

“Six guns have been undergoing battery trials since April. Another round of trials is scheduled in Pokhran this month. All trials are expected to be completed by July, after which it would be ready for induction into the Army,” a senior Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) official told The Hindu.

The Army has placed an initial order for 114 guns. “The first regiment of 18 guns will be inducted in 2017, another 36 guns in 2018 and 60 guns in 2019, completing the initial order,” an Army source said.

The Army has not yet decided where the first regiment would be deployed. “It is a medium gun with a maximum range of 40 km, and has a high angle of attack. So it can be deployed in both deserts and mountains,” the source added.

Higher range

Dhanush is an upgraded version, based on the original design of the Swedish 155-mm Bofors howitzers, which India procured in the mid-1980s. It is a 155-mm, 45-calibre gun with a maximum range of 40 km in salvo mode, compared to the 39-calibre, 27-km range of the original guns. OFB officials said it was 80% indigenous, and is manufactured by the ordnance factory in Jabalpur.

Why only 114 guns ordered? Shouldn't we have in 1000? Last time during kargil we had to get munitions from south Africa. Do we have them now in large quantities to support, long fight?

114 is initial order. At least 400+ Guns will be produced.

With the smooth conclusion of all major user trials of Six Dhanush Artillery guns by India Army, idrw.org has been informed by reliable industrial sources that after the Initial order of 114 155mm/45- Calibre Dhanush Howitzer Gun, Indian Army is working on Second mega order deal to acquire more Dhanush Artillery guns soon.

Indian Army is likely to place an order for 300 more Dhanush Artillery guns soon over the initial order of 114 guns which are already in production by Ordinance Factory Board (OFB). Initial orders for 114 Guns will be concluded by 2019.

With production rate of Dhanush Artillery guns to touch 60 per annum in 2019, Bulk order fo 300 Guns will require nearly 5 years for completion of the order but Indian Army is reportedly happy with proposed production timelines since major chunk of orders will likely be reserved for 155-mm, 52-calibre towed Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) artillery gun developed by DRDO with private defence sector companies .

ATAGS is currently going through developmental trials which soon will see first few prototypes been handed over to Indian Army to begin User trials which will commence rigorous integration and a testing cycle which can last for nearly three years before Army places an Initial order for the new Ultra Modern artillery gun.

large-scale induction and production will commence from 2024 onwards and Army might be inducting nearly 1500 + Guns over a decade which might see first Private Defence Production orders. OFB already has developed 55-mm, 52-calibre version of the Dhanush Artillery guns which already has cleared internal company trials, is also on offer to Indian Army to commence user trials if interest is shown by Indian Army.

There has been talk of ordering more than just 23 regiments (18 units a regiment) of OFB's Dhanush 155mm howitzer family.
Some want the final order to be in the 33 regiment range.

Meanwhile @DRDO_India expects to see its production partners get orders for 8 regiments of the ATAGS up front.
With a total order of 50 plus regiments eventually.

Lessons learned from Kargil being implemented now ..

I wonder how the artillery will shape up once ATAGS finally matures as a platform.

We'll have 414 Dhanush 45. It's expected that we'll go for 1000-1500 units of ATAGS (manufactured by Tata Power and Bharat Forge and probably OFB as well).

We'll probably go for Kalyani's ULH when it happens.

Then what becomes of OFB's Dhanush 52? Are we going to upgrade all Dhanush 45 and FH77s to Dhanush 52?

I hope we are producing their ammunition also in bulk unlike during kargil we had to buy from south Africa at high cost.
