Yeah, got a news from this website... It says it would be an air launched version as well as a sub torp tube launched version?

Just google Brahmos 3, there should be news somewhere in all the muck.

It is meant for FGFA, Mig-29K and possibly Rafale.

India Buys Bird-Strike Radars

PARIS AIR SHOW » 2013

As congestion increases, avoiding collisions between aircraft and birds is becoming a more pressing issue. The Indian Air Force, which conducts many operational and training flights and often at very low level, attributes around 10 percent of accidents to bird hits. It took the lead last year by issuing global bids to four companies for 45 bird detection and monitoring radar systems (BDRS) to be installed at airports and air bases across India.

New Camo Colours For Indian Super Hercs?

This scale model IAF C-130J Super Hercules at the Western Air Command headquarters in Delhi shows the platform in a grey-camo paint scheme. While the six current airframes at 77 Squadron are all in the standard grey of most IAF aircraft, sources say three of the follow-on six may be ordered in this nice camo livery. Sweet.

OT here but Indian Naval aviation also should consider changing its paint scheme. The current scheme ( ghost grey or whatever it's called) is dull and isn't inspiring.

India starts first training
course with new PC-7 Mk II
fleet

The Indian air force has commenced training with the Pilatus PC-7 Mk II, marking the recommencement of basic training for future air force pilots. The resumption of training involves more than 80 cadets and follows delivery of the air force's 14th PC-7 Mk II in June 2013, Pilatus says. The company adds that it has already provided training to Indian instructor pilots and maintainers on the type, which will operate from the Indian air force academy at Dundigal, Hyderabad. It also has "delivered a complete logistics support package".

In May 2012, New Delhi signed a deal worth over Swfr500 million ($ 526 million) for 75 aircraft. The successful conclusion of the deal was of great importance to the air force, which has suffered from a severe shortage of modern trainers. Deliveries are due to conclude during 2015, says Flightglobal's MiliCAS database, which also lists India as having an option for a follow-on batch of 37 aircraft. India's government-owned aircraft maker, Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL), has proposed developing its own basic trainer, the HTT-40, for the Indian air force's basic training needs. However, the service has resisted this initiative, contending that buying a proven trainer overseas is more economical than developing one. The new PC-7s replace the air force's HAL-built HPT-32 Deepak primary trainers, which were grounded in 2009, following a spate of crashes.

IAF eyes air base in Himalayas

Less than a month after history was created by landing a medium-lift aircraft, the C-130-J Super Hercules, at a remote airstrip in the Uttarakhand-Himalayas, the Indian Air Force is now eyeing a permanent base at Dharasu in Uttarkashi district of the state.

Two Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) at Dharasu and Gauchar in Rudraprayag district were used for the rescue operations following the June 16 and June 17 floods in Uttarakhand. Both ALGs have been studied for their feasibility by the IAF. They are separated by a 350-km road distance.

For the present, the ALG at Dharasu, at altitude of 4,300 feet, is being considered to be converted into a fully ready IAF base, sources confirmed to The Tribune. This could support helicopters and transport aircraft. The runaway is about 1,300 metres and is fully paved. The C-130-J landed at Dharasu on June 22 with fuel and full load on the airstrip.

There is enough clearance in the valleys to even land a C-17-Globemaster, the very heavy lift cargo plane that can ferry 80 tonnes and the runaway length is enough for the C-17 to operate, sources said. However, the tarmac may have to be redone. The C-130-J and the C-17 are specially designed planes that can take off and land from short runaways and even mud-paved runaways.

"For the immediate, the IAF could start off by basing helicopters and once the base is to be converted, it will support fixed wing planes," a senior functionary explained.

The air strip at Dharasu is on the right bank of Bhagirathi and is one of the rare flat areas available in the Himalayas. It will need some upgradation, including setting up of a secured perimeter fence, accommodation for pilots and staff.

The other ALG at Gauchar will also provide some facilities. The existing one is free for all and does not even have a proper perimeter fence or a gate. Even now a small detachment of the IAF is operating of Gauchar helping the civil administration and the border roads organisation in rebuilding infrastructure.

In case the ALG at Dharasu gets functional, this will be the first base in Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In Jammu and Kashmir, the IAF has bases at Srinagar, Leh, Kargil and Thoise, besides three ALGs. In Arunachal Pradesh, there are five ALGs which are at various stages of being fully paved.

imo the ALG could work well in civil calamity time but in war time the landing and parking of planes in alg may make the planes susceptible to enemy surprise attack. so plane shelter also needs to be bought up so as to secure precious assets

Mirage 2000 ugrade

French defence minister Jean-Yves Le Drian visited Air Force base at Maharajpura, Gwalior, for a briefing on the 51- French origin Mirage 2000 squadrons that are to be progressively upgraded under another defence project finalized with France in 2011-2012.

The overall upgrade programme of the Mirage-2000s, first inducted in the IAF fleet in the mid-1980s, is pegged at Rs 17,547 crore. The first two fighters are currently under upgrade by Dassault in France, which will take another 18 months or so, the remaining 49 jets will be progressively upgraded in India by HAL under agreement for transfer of technology.

During his visit the French minister interacted with pilots, officers and technicians who fly and maintain the fleet. He also visited Jaivilas Place and Gwalior Fort.

Le Drain was treated as a state guest. He reached Gwalior at 10. 30 am and took off to Paris from there at 4.30 pm.

Relationship with Indian Air Force great: US Air Commander

After the visit of the Indian Air Force Chief Marshal NAK Browne to the US, one of the country's top Air Commander has said that the American military's relationship with the Indian Air Force "is great".

"The relationship is great with Indian air force," General Herbert Carlisle, Commander of US Pacific Air Forces and Air Component Commander said yesterday.

During the last week's visit of the IAF Chief, Carlisle offered Browne "an apology" for cancelling the 'Red Flag' exercise due to budgetary cuts in the American armed forces. "We did make a commitment about having Red Flag next year this time and they (Indians) are going to participate. The sequestration (budgetary cuts) had an impact wherein we had to cancel the Red Flag (exercise)," Carlisle said.

During this exercise, IAF was scheduled to send a team of its most advanced Sukhoi 30 MKI fighters, along with support aircraft, for the war game which was scheduled to be held at the Nellis Air Force base in Nevada this July.

During his last week's visit, Browne received the second C-17 aircraft Globemaster military transport aircraft which forms a major component of its modernisation drive. In fact, Browne "flew C-17 (from Long Beach in California) to Washington DC through Colorado," the US commander said.

"The other things that he talked about is that the Indian Air Force is trying to develop a space command on the military side, because right now almost everything that is done in India in space is on the civilian and commercial side," he said. "They are trying to develop an Indian military space capability, as well as cyber capability," he added. For this purpose Browne went to Colorado to meet the US Space Command, where was briefed on how the US Space Command works, Carlisle said.

The two leaders also talked about the security situation in South Asia and what the two forces can do as partners to continue to work in that region.

"And it is everything from west side, piracy going into Maldives, to East side what happening in the East China Sea and how we can continue to maintain security and stability in the region. We had very good discussion," Carlisle said.

Mentioning that the Asia Pacific region is a priority area for the United States, Carlisle said "China was very much discussed" during Browne's US visit.

"I think, every nation in the Asia Pacific region has relationship with PRC (People's Republic of China) and we have to be cognizant about. We talked about their issues and commonality with the PRC, they have border issues, but they also have trade," he said.

Indian Air Force finally accepts UAV cadre proposal | idrw.org

A proposal to establish a separate cadre (from recruitment to operations) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)?or remotely piloted vehicles has reached Air Headquarters (AHQ), Indian Air Force (IAF), almost 18 months after it was first suggested .

A brainchild of the IAF Training Command headquartered in Bangalore, the new set-up aims at trimming of fighter pilots and will have a new training module developed.
Sources in Delhi confirmed that files pertaining to the proposal have reached the AHQ a few months ago. However, no confirmation was available on the status of the same. The IAF, which already uses?UAVs, is in the process of multiplying the forces.

A senior IAF officer said: "It will be similar to fighter pilots, transport pilots and so on, this will be a role-specific cadre, so that the officers are trained for a specific role from the time they are recruited."Deccan Herald had first reported about the development in February 2012, when the training command was drafting the proposal.

Erstwhile Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the command, Air Marshal Dhiraj Kukreja, had said the new cadre would be part of the existing squadrons.

Flying squadrons have about 12-15 aircraft, depending on capabilities. If the AHQ gives its clearance, the proposal will be sent to ministry for formal approval. Although the IAF?is already training its personnel for this specific role as it has UAVs in its fleet, Kukreja had said the force was diverting people who are medically incapable of being fighter pilots for this role.

"But with the kind of advancesthe medical field is making, we will soon see the number of such people reduce. And that is where this proposal comes in handy," he had said.
While pointing out the importance of the role of the UAVs, as successfully demonstrated by Israel and the US––both have separate cadres–– sources still emphasised on the man behind the mission.

Thereby, recruitment of officers or personnel specifically for this role will prove beneficial in the long run. Given the threat perceptions, the IAF will be forced to increase its dependence on such vehicles and is already discussing options of inducting new Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs).

While a full fleet of such vehicles from Israel––the Hunters––is expected to be acquired, the IAF will also have additional combat vehicles in the future.Sources said depending on the nature of the UAV, they could be deployed as independent units out in the front or made to be part of a station or (hand-launched type) be deployed with the infantry.

Discussions continue for third Indian Hawk deal, says BAE

BAE Systems remains hopeful of closing a third deal to sell Hawk advanced jet trainers to India, which has so far committed to acquiring 123 of the type

Deliveries of materials and equipment in support of licence production of the 57 Batch 2 aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics [HAL] continue to schedule," the UK company says in a half-year trading update published on 1 August.

To be assembled at the Indian firm's facilities in Bengaluru, these will follow a first batch of 66 UK-built trainers. These were delivered to the Indian air force between 2006 and 2012, says Flightglobal's MiliCAS database, with one having been destroyed in a crash in 2008. Forty of the aircraft contained within the second order will enter air force use, with 17 to be introduced by the Indian navy.

"A proposal has been submitted to HAL for the third batch of [20] Hawk trainer aircraft for the Indian air force, and discussions with the customer continue," says BAE. The company in mid-2012 revealed that the aircraft could be acquired to re-equip the air force's Surya Kiran aerobatic display team, which previously operated HAL-built HJT-16 Kiran jet trainers.
