India and Russia are planning to jointly develop a futuristic 'smart' battle tank, having higher speed and better firepower, reports quoting Nikolai Malykh, director general of Russia's biggest battle factory Uralvagonzavod (UVZ), as saying.

The two sides had preliminary discussions on the issue and defence ministry experts in India will discuss the new project when a delegation of the (UVZ) tank-building factory visits India this week to participate in an international seminar on the future main battle tank (FMBT) organised by the Army along with the Confederation of Indian Industry, according to Malykh.

''We put forward this idea (of developing the tank) at the turn of the 21st century. The Indian side has now come up with a similar proposal," the Moscow Defence Brief (MDB) magazine quoted Malykh as saying.

''We will take the first step when our experts go to India to attend a conference on the future tank and prospects for the tank-building industry," Malykh said on the sidelines of a defence expo.

The new tank will have higher speed, better firepower, sophisticated armour protection and a smoother ride and improved armour protection for crew, the report said.

Armour-protected crew compartment will be sealed from the unmanned turret equipped with an automatic loader, to ensure the survivability of highly trained human assets, it said.

Information for the crew will be networked using a virtual-reality command information system linked to reconnaissance aircraft and satellites.

The move comes even as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had suggested a joint assessment with the Indian Army to save the main battle tank (MBT) Arjun and keep the project alive.

The rmy, however, has rejected by the idea. The army is also ambiguous on a suggestion by the DRDO that the tank be assessed head-to-head with the T-90 MBTs the army currently operates.

A leading Russian defence expert says it makes good sense for India and Russia to join hands in building a futuristic tank.

India has purchased over 1,600 T-90S MBTs from the UVZ of which 1,000 will be manufactured at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi. Uralvagonzavod has for a long time been cooperating with the Avadi plant in the production of T-72 and T-90S MBTs.

Doesn't the new military thinking consider tanks as past their due date?

I thought they are considered too vulnerable now to be of any real use during war.

Somewhere I have read about a fesibility study of the Kabini core of the Kavari engine to be employed on Arjun or FMBT though I highly doubt for a gas turbine been employed in a tank, moreover India may have access to a new 155mm main tank gun from such collaboration. IMO India should try to develop her own Indigenous project on FMBT with the technological know how from T-90, experience earned from Arjun MBT and technical help or even collaboration from the Israeli part.

BTW which tank are they talking about the T-95, Black Eagle or something else? and what might be the tonnage of such smart tank?

Then chances are that implies this tank wont fructify. The Indian Army is already presenting a case for not inducting new tanks as the next generation of tanks, per IA will be Unmanned.

I don't have any information about reports of a feasible unmanned tank being considered any credible links (other than blogs or forums) would be appreciated. I think Current development doesn't indicates that a next generation MBT would be an Unmanned one, yes the turret may be unmanned.

The futuristic tank is going to use the hydropnumatic suspension which is used by arjun. Kaveri armor? Kanchan singh sahab :) and yes people are impressed with it. But mainly it will find usage in future ICV. The new tank will use combination of ERA and passive armor. Passive armor details are not known. Any body has info on that?

Tanks are very much in the scheme of things to conduct a war.

Without tanks, swift penetration of the enemy territory and capture of objectives is not feasible in the plains and the desert.

Infantry is required to capture and hold the ground which is something the tanks cannot do and hence the Infantry have been given matching mobility and speed by making them into mechanised infantry.

Good tactics and correct employment of ground minimises vulnerability, be it any arm.

For details of tanks and its future and the rotary wing revolution, one may like to read Brig Richard E Simpkins series of books published by Brassey Publications.

There is nothing better than a good tank, that can with withstand numerous RPGs and maybe a couple of Man-por ATGMs for modern warfare.

Also, an operational unmanned tank is not on the horizon anywhere. A UAV and a tank are not the same thing.

An unmanned turret in a tank and an unmanned tank are not the same thing, is it?
