AIR fails to give Pakistan Jinnah's 1947 speech

RnM Team 08 Jun 12 17:53 IST

MUMBAI: Pakistan's state-run broadcaster had asked All India Radio (AIR) for the historic speech in which Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah had addressed the Constituent Assembly on 11 August 1947, three days before the creation of Pakistan.

A report released by BBC today states that AIR does not have any recordings of the speech in which Jinnah had said people could follow any religion without state interference. "You are free; you are free to go to your temples, you are free to go to your mosques or to any other place of worship in this state of Pakistan. You may belong to any religion or caste or creed, that has nothing to do with the business of the state."

Pakistani officials said they had first contacted BBC for the speech. Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation director general Murtaza Solangi told Press Trust of India that the British broadcaster was unable to locate it in its extensive archives. He then turned to All India Radio, which operated stations across the subcontinent before Partition.

"I had received a call from Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation asking for a recording done on a certain date, but we don't have the tape with us," AIR director general LD Mandloi told BBC.

"We will inform the Prasar Bharati [Indian government broadcasting authority] and it is up to them to take it forward and inform Pakistan," he said.

"This[Jinnah] speech is very important for people who want to direct the country[Pakistan] to the goal of a modern, pluralistic, democratic state," Solangi earlier told PTI.

Solangi said that in 1947, radio stations in what is now Pakistan did not have proper recording facilities and hence they do not have a copy of the historic speech.

India invites Pakistan for investor's meet on Afghanistan
PTI | 06:06 PM,Jun 08,2012
From Lalit K Jha New Delhi/Washington, Jun 8 (PTI) Pakistan and China are among the countries invited for the regional investor's meet on Afghanistan to be held in New Delhi on June 28 to discuss ways to boost international-private sector investment in the war-torn country. Official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin said in New Delhi that though it is largely a private sector meet, India will also invite government entities for the conference aimed at exploring and promoting investments in Afghanistan on long-term basis. "Yes, I would like to confirm that all countries which were participants of the Istanbul process are being invited and that includes Pakistan too," he said when asked if Pakistan was also invited for the meet. This is the first international meet to be held by India involving the private sector. Significantly, the Indian initiative was also announced earlier in the day in Washington by Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Robert Blake. This conference, Blake said, will feature over 50 Afghan firms – with at least 10 of the companies owned by women – whose presence will spur direct business-to-business links between Afghan and international firms. The New Delhi conference then will inform a July 8th government summit in Tokyo that will develop strategies for Afghanistan's economic development, he added. Afghanistan, Blake said, would be one of the key issues of discussion when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton holds talks with the Indian-delegation led by the External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, in Washington on June 13. The meet - Delhi Regional and International Investor's Meet on Afghanistan - organised jointly by Indian and Afghanistan government along with CII is also expected to be attended by regional and international organisations, senior government representatives, international financial institutions, private and public sector Investors.

India to allow FDI from Pakistan: Sharma

In order to strengthen bilateral economic relations, India has allowed foreign direct investment from Pakistan, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said today.

Emphasising the need to increase economic engagement with the neighbouring countries, Mr. Sharma said: "We have allowed Indian investments in Pakistan and Pakistan's investment, whatever is the amount, to come to India".

He said that without engaging with Pakistan, South Asian economic integration would not be possible.

"We are clear that without engaging with Pakistan, South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) cannot move forward," he said in New Delhi.

The minister said that in the last one year, trade ties between India and Pakistan have moved forward.

To allow investments from Pakistan, the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) had sent a proposal to Finance Ministry for changes in Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Sources said that in order to address the security concerns over investments from Pakistan, FDI proposals from the neighbouring country can be routed through the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) which is headed by the Economic Affairs Secretary in the Finance Ministry.

As per the present FDI policy, a non-resident entity, other than a citizen of Pakistan or an entity incorporated in there, can invest in India. The government had earlier allowed investments from Bangladesh under the FIPB route.

Further, Mr. Sharma said that Chinese businessmen are also interested in investing in India.

"We will be encouraging and welcoming Chinese investments," he added.

atlast some sense is prevaling in both countries. both countries should also make a political union and a defense union, these will be very good CBM's for the future. pakistan has given lot of blood for the independence of this subcontinent and it's high time that both countries should try to forge some kind of lose lose union, where people from ether side should feel just as home in each other countries.

Pakistanis simply piggybacked on the sweat and blood of Indian freedom fighters; it is with good reason that Pakistan's greatest "freedom fighters" are book worms such as Iqbal and Jinnah, who didn't even spend a night in jail, spilling blood is a long shot.

As for forging a union with Pakistan, that's just crazy talk. I have lot of liberal Pakistani Punjabi friends who themselves are disgusted by their own country and say that Indian Punjabis are lucky to not be a part of the jahil zoo called Pakistan!

Sir ji,
Pakistan cannot be wished away, looking at the history and geography of Pakistan , I feel sorry for them. Their rulers gave them extremely false promises, but india has to act in a manner so that prosperity returns. There is a method to every madness. India has to
Search for that method. Defense union will happen. There is no option otherwise.

I'm all in for such unions with Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and even, possibly in the future, Burma! But Pakistan as it is? Not possible. Pakistan needs to socially change in character, otherwise, it is impossible for them to form such "unions" with any country, not just India. Pakistan is nothing but a burden.

MQM suggest Indian trade, tourism links via Bwp, Wahga, Khi

ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement Wednesday suggested the government to start trade with India through borders of Bahawalpur and Wahga, besides a ferry service between Karachi and Mumbai for tourists.

Resuming his speech on the federal budget 2012-13, Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and MQM's Parliamentary Leader Dr Farooq Sattar said the creation of more provinces including Bahawalpur, Janoobi Punjab, Hazara and FATA was inevitable that had been suggested in the shadow budget presented by the MQM.

He sought special allocations for Karachi Circular Railways, up-gradation of sewage and water supply projects in Karachi, adding during last four years no special projects have been executed in Karachi as well as other Sindh cities.

Sattar stressed the government to prioritize energy sector and that power crisis issue can be resolved by reprioritizing the gas distribution to various sectors.

He proposed the establishment of solar panels industry at local level instead of banking upon imported products to fully exploit the potential of alternative energy in the country.

The minister said low income housing societies have been planned in Karachi and Lahore for overseas Pakistanis, adding the government should exploit their capabilities to help increase foreign exchange for its use to establish IT parks and other such hi-tech facilities.

He said security-related issues can never be resolved until community policing is introduced by ensuring people's participation in security mechanism.

The MQM minister suggested the full empowerment of local government and suggested that the government should give incentives to local bodies over recovery of taxes as they could better detect the people having taxable income.

India-Pakistan relations have reached a historic turning point that neither country can afford to miss

At long last the ice in which India-Pakistan relations have been locked is beginning to melt. Pakistan has granted Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India's exports, bringing nearly 6,000 items onto the regular list of permissible imports. India is hastening to remove a host of non-tariff barriers to Pakistan's exports: a Joint India-Pakistan committee is even now pruning the forest of regulations enacted by 24 Indian standards organisations that had become India's answer to Pakistan's denial of MFN.
The Hindu : Opinion / Lead : Understanding the thaw

I see there is a recent surge in the media talking about better relations with the neighbour. Although, there is not much difference on the ground level since 26/11 except that Pak has further gone down the drain and is in chaos.

:namaste:

We should hand over Siachen as well, the best CBM ever!

Why don't we extend a visa-free open invitation to all the terrorists as well, there won't be any need of any jihad then.

MFN couldn't come into effect because of LoC tensions: Khar
The Pakistan Cabinet had signed off on granting India the contentious Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status in January this year but it was not operationalised because of the beheading of Indian army soldiers on the line of control. This important disclosure was made by former foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar in an exclusive interview with HT.
"If the LoC tensions hadn't happened, the MFN was through. President Zardari had pushed for it and it had the approval of the Cabinet. The LoC reaction shocked all of us,'' Khar told HT.

"It was deeply disappointing for me personally,'' said Khar, adding, "we took the very bold MFN decision and made sure that all parties were on board. We built political consensus but were shocked to hear India's army chief up the ante.'' Khar says she was chided by the PML(M) but her response was, we don't want a tit for tat.

Pushing for peace ties with India, Khar, who served as the foreign minister for over two years emphasised that she was neither a dove nor a hawk, but a realist who pushed her government's policy for better relations with India, "We have to develop the region together. We don't beat our chests on India-bashing and don't want a nation growing up hating Indians or Hindustan.''

The minister regretted that while Pakistan was willing to go that extra mile to improve relations, the Manmohan Singh government was not able to contain the "Pakistan-beating mentality'' promoted by Indian news channels which then also "infected the Congress and its government and state assemblies."

When reminded that India needs to see movement in the 26/11 trial going on at a snails pace in an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, Khar responded saying, "We do not want the kalank of not punishing the guilty but for how long will India hold itself hostage. Pakistan is not stuck on the Samjhauta train blast trial in which many innocent Pakistanis were killed."

"I will take full marks for creating the atmosphere and the dynamics for better ties with India but I have to say that the political leadership in India has not helped shape the same narrative."

On what advice she would give the Nawaz Sharif government as the former foreign minister, Khar said, "I hope they follow what we do and I hope they do better but India needs to reciprocate. I hope India is reading the positive signals being sent by Nawaz Sharif."

===========================================================================

So, the lady is doing all the talking. But who is buying what she speaking?

1. putting onus of not being able to provide India MFN status on India.
2.Being surprised by what CoAS's statement
3.Assertion that PM Singh cannot contain Pakistan bashing.
4.That Pakistan walked the extra mile but India didn't respond.
5.Equating Samjhauta express incident and Mumbai 26/11. Or other-way around cannot find difference between the two incidents.
6. Finally giving herself full marks for creating conducive atmosphere.

Who is buying what you speak?
