Ride under the sea! Drilling the 7-km route of undersea bullet train project at full swing

NEW DELHI: Drilling of the seven-km undersea route of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail corridor is underway to ascertain soil condition of India's first bullet train path.
Passengers will get the thrill of riding under the sea, a first in the country, near Thane at a maximum speed of 350 km per hour in the upcoming high speed train project connecting two major metropolis.
"Soil and rocks below the 70-metre-deep see are being tested as part of the geo-technical and geo-physical investigation undertaken for the entire project," said a senior Railway Ministry official, adding "the test will also cover the 21-km-long underground tunnel between Thane and Virar."
Barring the 21-km-long tunnel, most part of the 508-km- long corridor is proposed to be on the elevated track while there will be a stretch after Thane creek towards Virar which will go under the sea as per the detailed project report by JICA, the funding agency of the project.
Railways opted for an elevated corridor to avoid land acquisitions and the need to build underpasses.
The tunnel was necessitated to protect the thick vegetation in that area, said the official.
The geo-investigation is crucial for the project as it would ascertain the bearing capacity of the soil below 70 feet at the sea.
Estimated to cost about Rs 97,636 crore, 81 per cent of the funding for the project will come by way of a loan from Japan. The project cost includes possible cost escalation, interest during construction and import duties.
The survey is likely to be followed by the final location survey to mark the alignment and exact spots for the pillars on which trains will run at higher speed to reduce the travelling time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad drastically.
Currently it takes about seven hours to travel between the two cities and the bullet train aims to reduce it to about two hours.
Construction of the corridor is expected to start in 2018 and is estimated to be completed by 2023.
JICA agreed to fund 81 per cent of the total project cost through a 50-year loan at an interest rate of 0.1 per cent and a moratorium on repayments up to 15 years.

And the basic question remains, in case of a failure mid tunnel, how will the passengers get out? Remember this isn't like city MRT, the distances between the individual stops is huge. If the car/bogie stops in the middle, what happens? The tube itself is depressurised. Passengers won't be able to get out of the tube, and will start suffocating soon. These are very basic questions that tesla cannot answer and the solution to which require huge change in the design. lets see, time will tell if I'm right or not :)
Think about this: in case of failure mid-flight, how do airplane passengers get out?

Any mode of transport and any industry operates on a risk management basis. That's it. If the hyperloop industry, like the airline industry, can bring instances of failure down to acceptably negligible levels, it's go time. That's all it's about - no transport system can guarantee 100% safety.

^^ I have always advocated that route- Majestic to Chennai Central on one hand (stations being underground of course), Majestic to Seunderabad on the other hand and Chennai Central to Secunderabad- an HSR triangle if you will.

For some bizarre reasons, a couple of surveys commissioned for the Bangalore-Chennai route, gave negative feedback.

^^^ yeah idk why mumbai-ahmedabad was chosen. i guess they wanted to start small and then expand in the future. i can assure you, we will be building more bullet trains with Japan in the future, with higher level of investment.

Not easy to set up Bullet train in India. People in Gujarat/Maharashtra won't be happy to leave their home and land. Any idea how and where they will be moved and how well they will be compensated ?

That's why they have chosen to build whole project on elevated corridor and tunnels. It would require quiet less land for same , example being delhi metro and others.

IIRC, a recent article mentioned that by mid 2020's target in 35 bullet train , which would be increased upto 105 by 2053.

"The seating capacity of the bullet train would be around 750 passengers and will later be increased to 1,250, once more coaches are added. Initially, 35 bullet trains will be operated. By 2053 this number is likely to go up to 105.

Regarding worst fear regarding bullet train is the tracks, especially tracks expansion and contraction due to temperature differentials here in India.

Technology seems to have gone into train and signalling, tracks seem to be same old technology.

next route of the bullet train is gonna be to the pune which is another hugh city close by so its logical thing to do even though its already connected with high speed express highway because that route gonna be extended all the way to the vice capital of the state nagpur ,
simultaneously , bangalore and hyderabad and chennai bullet train routes gonna be built and high speed train connectivity to these cities is much required than ahemdabad which is already closer than them ,

amd rest of the train routes gonna be built as this technology gets comparatively cheaper .

Pune and Nashik routes were found to be not feasible....not on table yet.

Tight budget and ghat sections are the reasons.
