Same here, I have been using it for long without realizing that it contradict with the Hindu belief of rebirth.

I just hope the writer has given a better alternative than Om shanti Om, I don't think most people would use it.

In some religion, it would be Rise in Peace.

Life is too Restive on Earth and so after death, the soul is said to rise and so ideal would be for the soul to rise in a peaceful way!

Ok! I learned something, pray according to the religion of the deceased, if the person deceased is Hindu say " भगवान उसे मोक्ष प्रदान करे" (may God give him Moksha), if he is a Muslim then say "Ena lillah wa ena elaihe rage'oon", if he is a Christian then say "RIP" and so on... one more thing, never forget to add one more line "Please don't come back on earth, pweeezz..."
