Emerging country of 1.2 billion people, opened 1st professional league and is already attracting major sponsors

India has become one of the priorities in the strategic plan for the dissemination of FIFA soccer. On last Wednesday, the entity that runs the football presented the plan, done in conjunction with the AIFF (Indian Football Association).

"India is a priority country for Fifa in Asia in terms of football development. We are investing a lot in this country because we believe in its enormous potential. It is a fast growing economy with 1.2 billion people, "said Jerome Valcke, FIFA Secretary General, visiting the country.

One of the key steps that occurred last weekend, when it opened the first professional league in the country. For the first edition of the tournament, there was a description of eight teams: Atletico Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi Dynamos, Goa, Pune City, Blasters Kerala, Mumbai, Northeast United.

The league has already created its own brand, an official website, and from the arrival of sponsorship, brought some familiar players, in order of career. Thus, the competition launched by the IMG agency, will feature Robert Pires, Anelka, Trezeguet, Del Piero, Materazzi, Ljungberg and Capdevila, among others.

Eight Brazilian act in the tournament, among which the best known is midfielder Elano, ex-Santos, Gremio and Flamengo. The player, who defended the Brazilian team at the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, works by Chennayiyn. Already coach Zico directs Goa, located in the territory that was once a Portuguese colony.

The initiative has sparked interest from companies like Hero MotoCorp (sponsor master), Puma (official ball), Samsung, Suzuki and Pepsi, among others. The league also has a strategic partnership with the Premier League, which runs the trendy English Premier League, the most profitable in the world.

The goal of the leaders of the country is to make the competition become, in a short time, a major Asian leagues. Another goal, to attract fans, is to improve the level of the Indian team. In 2017, the country enters definitively on the map of official FIFA events, to host the World Cup U-17.

"With this competition, we will have a kick off. India will be able to have other official competitions in the future, with the help of the government and the country's economy, "said Valcke, in a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of India.

The country was ranked only once for the World Cup. In 1950, opponents dropped out of the playoffs, giving direct qualification to India for the World Cup played in Brazil. But the federation gave up sending the team after the FIFA ban the team from playing barefoot, as was customary at the time in the country.

"With the help of FIFA, will be able to implement a complete development framework," says Praful Patel, president of the Indian federation, showing that times have changed.

You really have start practicing more sports if you want to be a Global Great Power. I checked your record in olympics and it is really poor for a country of 1.25 billion. India has 26 olympic medals, Finland with population of 1/220 of India has 463. We were also a very poor country, but success in Sports was the way for a national pride and recognition. 26 medals is really pathetic number, can´t believe it...

Problem with India is that you do not have any positive role models, look at Kimi Raikkonen, everybody knows him. the most famous Indian sportman is Vijay Amritraj, and he is remembered not by name, not by tennis, but by comedic role in a James Bond movie, which once again showed india in a dubious light.

When you develop football, copy the system from Germany. They created very good youth system, with football fields on every street corner. They got the population to play high qualilty football, now they are world champions. The way to develop football is NOT to buy old stars to play in your league, development starts from your own youth.

Sport for sport's sake was never a priority in India. Sport for its own sake becomes a priority when individual excellence is respected for what it is and not for what it brings for the nation. Hope that will soon change. Sportspeople should be allowed to practise their sport of choice without being encumbered by national pride. Of course, the nation can take pride when they do well.. but that should not put a pressure on them.

India has more population but GDP wise more than Brazil.

India used to be around 23 % of world's GDP before British dominated and looted this region.

Cricket is Big in India and 100's of crores of rupees of revenue is generated every year on this sport.

You mean British and other foreign invaders are responsible for India's pathetic state in football and Olympics?
