"Muilenburg also flagged the F-22 Raptor, a fifth-generation fighter jointly developed with Lockheed Martin Corp, as a future sales prospect for India, calling it "an area of future investment for which we are interested".

^will they sell their top secret plane to India ?? USA has been reluctant to provide the F-22 even to allies like Japan , Israel & Britain .

what is the meaning of "Idea of future investment " ? possibility of make in India ??

and we need this plane or Pak-fa is sufficient for us ?

is it just an American strategy to sell F-18 ??

In few year from now we shall have PAKFA, FAGFA, AMCA and super sukhoi. It doesn't matter much for us whether they sell it or not. It is a half a billion plane and we can not afford though they offer us.

cost is high because less planes were produced , for example Israel bought first of the F-35 at 200 million $ a piece , later it's price were reduced to 150 million $ and now it is further reduced .

if USA will make these planes in India they will make these planes for their allies too ( F-35 is not good for air superiority roles ) then its cost will be reduced .
yes maintenance cost will be high ........

why USA if offering such deals to India ??

what will be the psychological effect on china & pakistaan ?

+1 to what @HariPrasad-1 said. To add to it, there are many weapon systems that we manufacture but don't buy it for our own army. For example the Marine One helicopter (and all other helicopters of that model) are made 80% in HAL's facility in Hyderabad (body and rotor blades) and we export it back to USA but we don't use that for our own military. Similarly they offered to manufacture the small Raven drone, we allowed that, now they are begging us to induct it into Indian army, we rejected that offer. We did the same with Javelin missile. We said that we can do a JV for R&D, we can even co-develop and co-manufacture but we will not guarantee that we will necessarily buy it. The JV company can sell to other nations. We bought Israeli Spike missile and sprinkled water on US hopes forever.

Let them offer, we will evaluate where our benefit lies and then decide. But it is true that they have been pressurizing us to buy their planes. They forced us to include the F16 in our MMRCA contest even though we were not keen on buying it. I feel that aeroplanes are too strategic a platform to acquire from the US. We need to build or buy main platforms with those nations with whom we have overlapping strategic goals, and we should buy only tactical accessories from the US like EMALS or ELINT packages or other things like that. Buying entire planes and ships should be avoided.

No F22 or F35 , JSF.

India is not buying anything like that. They will not give the technology to India. So not interested.

There is an export ban in place for the F-22.
Government in the US is a joke. It's a pawn of the corporate. They have removed many such bans in the past after sanctioning India in 1999, because it was hurting their defense industry.

@Nuvneet

It is not enough if Boeing allows the deal (20 years from now). What about the main partner for the F-22, Lockheed?

Boeing wants a part of the MMRCA pie even now. Lockheed wants us to buy F-35s.

I don't think we need to be a part of that.

Maintenance nightmare and will suck our funds and kill the R&D which now is getting back on track.

@Keshav Murali @Bahamut Yup, we don't need this white elephant. We wanted the M777 Howitzer but they kept us hanging for that, and now they want to force us to buy these planes that we don't need.

Fake news. Will Yankees easily sell their most valued weapon to a pro rusky country like Ynidia just for counterbalance chinkies.
They even not sold it to japs. Leave alone us. :D
Nor we need it. We have other options.

First of all hypothetically speaking if India wants it India could get it from US in the future as after the Indo-US nuclear deal proved how important India US relations have become but India will have to sign CISMOA , BECA and LSA sending wrong signals to Moscow and it will be a political nightmare and secondly the F-22 program was cancelled like 6 years ago or some thing like that , creating this plane was a logistical nightmare as the sub contractors were spread out in like 44 states . This was done deliberately as a political football as we Indians are aware of it. Its flyway cost according to pentagon is 360 million dollars which is a disaster in itself.According to pentagon this plane requires nearly 30 hrs of maintenance for every 1to 1.5 hrs of flight time which is also a disaster in itself . Lockheed Martin contractors were not happy with the plane as its RAM skin was vulnerable to elements. This plane according to MSNBC is a basket case of military logistical nightmare .

No f-22's have been built since 2012. Flyaway cost was reported at 150 million each but in reality it is probably over 300 million last number I heard was 280 million?

It is a good thing to buy some 5 to 10 raptors and operate for top secret missions.
