7 hottest rivals of Netflix in India

Having made its foray into India a few months back, video streaming service Netflix has made enjoying your favorite movies and TV shows a hassle-free affair. Netflix has been steadily gaining popularity since its launch and more people are subscribing to it.
But that doesn't mean it's the only one out of there. There are quite a few homegrown alternatives to Netflix that you can use to watch your favourite movies and TV shows. Here's a list of seven such Netflix rivals.
BoxTV
Use the BoxTV app to download movies and TV shows in various languages like English, Hindi Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Bengali, Malayalam and Marathi. It's a one stop app for getting video content in various languages. Theapp lets you register with your email account and also includes the functionality to sign in through Facebook or Google+. With BoxTV, you can access over 17,000 hours of video content from Bollywood, Hollywood. There's also a wealth of TV shows and regional language content.
(Disclaimer: BoxTV is a part of Times Internet, which in turn is owned by the Times Group)

Spuul

Spuul offers only video content from the Indian entertainment industry. You can stream and download Bollywood movies as well as movies in other regional languages. Furthermore, the movies can be downloaded in sizes under 60MB and purchased online via credit/debit cards and PayPal. You don't have to wait for movies to be downloaded to watch them, as Spuul lets you watch movies while they are being downloaded in the background.
BIGFlix

When Netflix came to the Indian market, Reliance Entertainment re-launched its movie streaming service BIGFlix. However, the Netflix rival only offers movies in Indian languages. With the app, you can watch free clips to collect BIGFlix coins and then use them to watch the movies you want to. It is worth noting that movies are only available to be watched for 24 hours.
Eros Now

As the name suggests, the app lets users enjoy content like movies and music videos from Eros Now. The content is not limited to Bollywood, as it includes movies and music made in other regional languages too. However, the content is still a bit less as compared to other apps, as the app only has content from Eros now.
Wynk Movies

This is one app that we really liked, mainly because of the wide variety of content that it offers. Wynk offers five movie channels, including Eros Now, HOOQ, Sony LIV, YouTube and Dailymotion. This means that users can enjoy content from all these channels with just one app. The app can also be connected to Chromecast and includes trailers of latest movies. It also lets users create lists of their favourite movies.
YuppTV

With YuppTV, users can access over 200 live TV channels from their smartphones. Apart from this, they can catch up on the shows they've missed till the next 7 days. The app also includes Bollywood and regional movies and lets users request for TV shows.YuppTV is more suited for those who love their TV shows and can't think of missing an episode.
MyPlex
MyPlex is another app that offers its users choice between movies, videos and live TV channels. The app has both Hollywood and Bollywood movies, as well as free online videos. What is different about the app is that it also offers news updates. Apart from that, detailed show timings and reminders for favourite TV shows can also be set.

37 mobile manufacturing plants set up in India in last 1 year: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Ravi Shankar Prasad said that 11 crore mobile phones have been made in the country in last one year compared to 6 crore earlier.
NEW DELHI: India has attracted investment from 37 mobile manufacturing companies in last one year that have generated 40,000 direct jobs and 1.25 lakh indirect employment, IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.
"We decided to make India a big hub of electronics manufacturing. In the last one year, 37 new mobile manufacturing units have come," Prasad said after inaugurating government-funded 'Electropreneur Park.'
He said that 11 crore mobile phones have been made in the country in last one year compared to 6 crore earlier.
"We have given jobs to forty-thousand people and 1.25 lakh indirect jobs," Prasad said.
Chinese companies like Gionee and Xiaomi are making their handsets at Foxconn plant in Andhra Pradesh. Domestic companies such as Karbonn, Lava, Micromax, Intex, Jivi, iTel, and MTech too have set up their manufacturing plants in the country.
As per industry sources, Chinese company LeEco will start mobile manufacturing unit on Tuesday.
Prasad said that besides manufacturing electronics product in India, product designing is also important.
He said that government has provided Rs 10,000 crore under Electronics Development Fund to support new entrepreneurs in the field of electronics.
The Electropreneur Park (EP), which was inaugurated today in South Campus of Delhi University, is an incubation centre set up with government funds of around Rs 21 crore to support incubation of up to 50 companies.
Set-up in collaboration with academia and industry represented by Indian Electronics and Semiconductor Association, the Park will focus on creation of intellectual property rights and product development to increase domestic manufacturing of electronics items.
"India imports electronic goods of over Rs 3 lakh crore. By 2020 government aims to bring down import to zero. The Electropreneur Park started today is a step in that direction," minister of state for IT and law P P Choudhary said.
Ministry of Electronics and IT has selected six startup firms that will develop products at this incubation centre.
"6 out of 176 start-ups have been selected which means they have capability of developing good quality products and selection of six more are in pipeline," MEITY additional secretary Ajay Kumar said.

With Jio looks like telecom market is going to reset again, same as in 2002-03.

Frankly I believe data charges by mobile operators are too high, especially for the top up data packs.

Its not going to happen any time soon. The very reason for this is the absence of infra. But here you simply can't held anyone responsible. For a country like India with its population, its hard to provide cable network to each and every nook and corner.
The highest bandwidth cable (fibre) network right now is in Japan, and it was possible because of their geography. Unlike Japan you cant have a vast fibre network in India. We are dependent on UTPs when there is a need to connect end user. So the thirst for bandwidth would be there, but the means to quence it is limited right now. So cellular data is here to stay.
Moreover majority of data users in India are school and college going kids or the young entrepreneurs. Its not possible to provide them with cable network on go, which they basically want and right now Wi-Fi is becoming obsolete for these kind of users. The only way out is to provide Li-Fi. But again its not going to happen in such massive scale anywhere in near future.

India may get 5G with the rest of the world

The country might as well take a step forward and acquire a leadership position in certain areas as it enters into an era of Internet of Things with connected devices and machines.
BENGALURU: India stands a chance to get 5G technology with the rest of the world as the country enters an era of Internet of Things (IoT), Telecom Secretary J S Deepak said here today.
"...We got 2G 25 years after the rest of the world, at least after the developed world. We got 3G more than a decade after it became ubiquitous in US, Europe. 4G may be, five years after its global launch. In 5G, we have the chance of being there with the rest of the world," Deepak said.
He added that the probable simultaneous launch of 5G in India along with the rest of the world could be from bridging the gap that had prevailed and the country might as well take a step forward and acquire a leadership position in certain areas as it enters into an era of Internet of Things with connected devices and machines.
Deepak was speaking after inaugurating the first edition of 'IoT India Congress' that aims to bring together key stakeholders across the value chain and verticals to collaborate.
"The IoT, which is estimated to have...something like 50 billion connected devices in the next 5-6 years, will unleash a business opportunity for India, at least of USD 15 billion," he said.
In a recorded video address to the Congress, Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, IoT is important because connected devices are going to become the order of the day.
"IoT is important more for the poor, for the farmers, for healthcare, for education sectors, to make the quality of life better...," the Minister said.
Deepak said a very 'vibrant' IoT ecosystem would be seen in India very soon.
The Department of Telecom has come out with a machine- to-machine (M2M) roadmap which seeks to synergise regulators, bodies involved in development of standards, manufacturers and perspective users so that associated industries could benefit.
Pointing out the initiatives like Telecommunications Standards Development Society India and others by the Department of Telecom, he said "Leveraging technology is an objective which pervades the whole of government. The Department of IT has developed an IoT policy which is in the draft stage and under consultation..."
Stating that there is lot of work in progress like KYC norms for SIM embedded M2M devices, 13 digits numbering scheme for IoT - for SIM embedded M2M devices, he said, "The Department of Telecom has requested the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for recommendations in the area of quality of service standards of international roaming system and requirement of additional spectrum for an IoT ecosystem in India.
"As soon as the recommendations are received we hope to come out with specific decisions..." he said.

Yes it's true.

Current mobile operators are going for over kill with these type of data charges.

Example yesterday I got a 3g booster pack for 300 mb and pug charged me 100 rs.

I called the customer care and related with Jio plans and she replied with Jio shortcomings and blah blah....

Jio has taken these goons by the horns and now the big boys shall try to hinder it's progress.

Only things matter now is

1) Indian companies should rule.
2) Quality service with affordable rates.

India ready to put driving licences onto smartphones

Iphone 7 and 7plus Credit: Press Association
The paper or plastic driving licence could be consigned to history as India announces that it will allow motorists to store the documents on their smart phones.
Under its proposals the information will be kept in the cloud, with drivers able to keep digital copies of both their licences and car registration documents on their phones, Mashable reported.
They will need to install an app called Digilocker onto their device and register with the service. The police in India have confirmed they will recognise the documents presented for inspection on a smart phone.
India launched Digilocker last year, encouraging people to store official paperwork including identification documents, voter ID cards and college certificates in the cloud.

Is the end due for the traditional driving licenceCredit: Alamy

The purpose of the Digilocker initiative is to reduce administrative expense and streamline government.
In the United States, Iowa is encouraging drivers to keep an electronic version of their driving licence on their phones. It would work in a similar way to electronic boarding passes used by many airlines.
One advantage of an electronic licence is that it would be quicker for police to check if they pull a motorist over.
In Britain the days of the traditional paper train ticket, which has been used by passengers for more than 170 years, also appear to be numbered.
The industry and the government have been working on a smart card which could be used on all public transport.
Earlier this year the industry was reported to have set an eight year deadline for the transition which would see passengers using smart cards or their phones to store their tickets.

The agreement will help Vodafone expand its 2G network further, especially in rural areas and strengthens BSNL's network reach in urban areas,
NEW DELHI: Private operator Vodafone and state-owned BSNL have inked a countrywide 2G intra-circle roaming agreement to provide better telecom services to their respective customers.
"Vodafone and BSNL today signed a 2G intra-circle roaming agreement to use each other's assets and network strength across the country. This strategic partnering will lead to improved connectivity and enhance the customer experience overall," Vodafone said in a release.
The agreement will help Vodafone expand its 2G network further, especially in rural areas and strengthens BSNL's network reach in urban areas, it said.
Vodafone India has over 1,37,000 towers across the country and BSNL has more than 1,14,000 (tower).
"We want our hundreds of million customers to consistently enjoy a superior network experience and remain confidently connected, at all times, for all their voice and data needs," said Sunil Sood, MD & CEO, Vodafone India.
Vodafone has made significant investments to expand, enhance and upgrade its network, making SuperNet its best network ever, he added.
This partnering with BSNL will further strengthen the reach of our network especially in the hinterland of the country and surrounding rural areas, Sood said.
Anupam Shrivastava, Chairman & Managing Director, BSNL said: "We continue to expand our network across the country with more sites and sharing infrastructure with other telecom service providers.
"This partnering with Vodafone will help us make our network coverage better, especially in urban areas, enabling our customers to have a better experience of our services," he said further.

Cheaper internet data may lead India to digital farming
NEW DELHI: Prospect of people getting cheaper internet data in India might have taken political overtone when politicians resort to 'atta' (wheat flour) verses 'data' debate in the wake of an advertisement featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but the availability of cheap and fast data has potential to increase farm productivity and income of farmers.
India's space agency ISRO's ongoing programme of predicting site suitability of particular crop, cropping intensity, early season crop forecasting, soil texture, moisture as well as agricultural water management will show the desired result only when farmers can access these information right on their smart phones.
"The country's space agency can even assess if a particular crop can be planted in particular site. But, dissemination of such information to each and every farmer in the country remains a big challenge. The government's initiatives through digital India programme will help, provided farmers can afford internet data on their mobile phones and access those vital inputs", said an official involved with the programme.
Though many such information are being shared through various 'Krishi Vigyan Kendra' (Agriculture Science Centres) across the country, the farmers are still not getting faster and more accurate farm and crop-specific solution to their problems on the ground.
Availability of affordable data will help them getting such information when the world is moving fast towards 'digital farming' where data-driven insights are helping farmers improve their on-farm decision-making. Days are not far when they can send farm pictures including of weeds and infected portion of crop fields to scientists and get a quick solution on their phones.
Crop Science division of the global crop protection and seed giant, Bayer AG, has already started testing its digital tool in India. Idea behind 'digital farming' is to help farmers identify pests, disease and weeds down to the square meter of their farms and provide them with solution to enhance yield and farm profitability.
The company had last week demonstrated its 'digital farming' tool during 'Future of Farming Dialogue 2016' in Germany. Responding to the TOI's question as to how such tools can work in the country like India where majority of the farmers have small landholdings, head of the Bayer's Crop Science Division, LiamCondon, said the company was familiar with the challenges being faced by small landholders and lot of testing was going on at right level to find out right solution for them.
Condon noted that the testing was being done in India to find out how the mobile phone technology can combine with the Bayer's outreach programme and how it can be used in smart and simple way to help the company solve problems of farmers, keeping in mind their level of education.
The crop scientists during the Farming Dialogue at Leverkusenand field demonstration in the German countryside explained that the digitalization can give farmers timely field-level information for selecting right inputs including fertilizer or crop protection dose, determining the ideal time for crop protection measures and recognizing plant stress factors at an early stage.
The Bayer in its digital farming narrative noted that the farming has and will always be a field where decisions are made from a mixture of knowledge, experience, and gutt-feeling. Digitalization, however, provides farmers the ability to more accurately predict the outcomes as well as most effectively respond to the Mother Nature's ever-reoccurring challenges.
It said, "By combining the power of a farmer's instinct with cutting-edge technologies of today, such as satellite imagery and GPS, we can help a farmer to make best-informed decisions every day, month, season, or year. Decision-making will become sharper, smarter, and simpler for the farmer, anywhere, anytime".

India’s Hike Messenger takes aim at WhatsApp
Kavin Bharti Mittal’s tech start-up looks to take advantage of data price war

Oil products group Reliance Industries’ $24bn foray into India’s telecoms sector has sparked a data price war with Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder of market leader Bharti Airtel — but for his son it is cause for celebration.
Kavin Bharti Mittal’s tech start-up Hike Messenger last month became the 10th Indian “unicorn”, or privately held company valued at more than $1bn, when it raised $175m in funding at a $1.5bn valuation.
@Kyubi
Facebook-owned WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in India but the younger Mr Mittal said Hike’s richer, more data-hungry set of offerings such as cartoon stickers, games and news updates will give it an advantage, as mobile data become more accessible in the country.
“It’s probably the best thing that’s happened in the past four years,” said Mr Mittal — whose company launched in December 2012 — of the data price cuts triggered by Reliance’s Jio subsidiary. “As data becomes cheaper, faster, better, it definitely tilts the whole thing in our favour.”
Mukesh Ambani, Reliance chairman, this month revealed data tariffs as low as Rs67 ($1) per gigabyte, along with unlimited downloads from 2am to 5am, and free voice calls. Bharti Airtel had sought to pre-empt the announcement by cutting data rates 80 per cent to Rs51 per gigabyte, for users who paid an upfront annual fee of Rs1,498. Analysts have warned that these lower charges spell years of lean margins for the sector.
“Am I concerned? Yes,” Sunil Bharti Mittal told the FT in March. “In 2002 … they did the same thing, they crashed the price,” he added, referring to Reliance’s first assault on the sector through a mobile business that later came under the control of Mr Ambani’s brother Anil.
But his son noted the huge uptake of mobile phones during that period, calling it evidence of Reliance’s potential to transform the sector for the better. “Reliance ended up showing that there is elasticity in the market. If you drop prices, people will come on board,” he said.
Hike’s latest round of funding included contributions from Taiwan’s Foxconn and Tencent, whose WeChat app is used by 500m Chinese for purposes ranging from messaging to financial services.
Mr Mittal said he would draw on Tencent’s expertise to develop a similarly wide range of functions on Hike, and that he expected to launch a payment function next year.
Neha Dharia, an analyst at telecoms consultancy Ovum, said such offerings were likely to become increasingly important as Indian smartphone users followed trends set in east Asia. But she added that WhatsApp was the clear Indian market leader with more than 100m monthly active users last year, up from 70m in 2014.
Mr Mittal said Hike had been downloaded more than 100m times, but declined to say how many active users it had.
Although Hike was funded for its first two years by a joint venture between Bharti Airtel and Japan’s SoftBank, Mr Mittal said the public focus on his family background was “unfair to the work we are doing here”.
“In life, everyone has to use whatever unfair advantage they get. And I’ve had plenty, and I’ve also been on the opposite side, because eyes were on us from day one,” he said.
Now, this is called the spirit of an Indian Bania.:biggrin2:

Parrikar launches upgraded Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence websites
[India], Sept.15 (ANI): As part of the Prime Minister's 'Digital India' programme, Defence Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar launched the re-designed website of Department of Defence Production (DDP), Ministry of Defence, here today. The website is now fully compliant to the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW).
The website has been re-designed using the Content Management Framework (CMF) developed by National Informatics Centre (NIC). It is now more user centric, user friendly, universally accessible and less vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Web pages have been made responsive and easy to access through different devices i.e. desktop, tablet PCs and mobile phones with varying screen sizes. The website has also been optimized for viewing by different browsers and operating systems.
The website of the DDP provides news updates, policies, procedures, publications, directory of officials and media contents such as e-book, photo-gallery etc. A link for online service of the Department - 'Application for NoC for Export of Military Stores' has been provided.
One of the salient features of the website is that it is interactive and suggestions and clarifications related to defence production can be given or sought through the online feedback form. Another feature of the website is its accessibility by visually impaired persons and persons with motor disabilities, who can access the web content using screen readers and other assistive technologies through accessibility links and icons conveniently placed on the standardized header and footer.
The revamped website has given comprehensive link to websites maintained by various wings and organisations under the department such as 'Make in India' defence portal, Ordnance Factory Board, DGQA, Directorate of Standardisation, Defence Offset Management Wing and websites of nine Defence Public Sector Undertakings. Related links of other Ministries/Departments like Finance, Commerce, Corporate Affairs, DIPP, DPE, MSME, etc have also been provided.
Thus the website provides complete information at one place to all stakeholders i.e. public, vendors, exporters, users (Armed Forces), producers (public and private), quality assurance agencies, industry associations, other Central Ministries and State Governments, about the various initiatives which DDP has taken and is taking to promote manufacturing and export in the defence sector under the 'Make in India' initiative.
