How many times India will replace the tanks.

As if nothing else matters...

If those photoes are the motive, why did India buy T-72....

Court martial the bugger who selected those...

Are you going to face Abrahams.... T-72 are good for Al Khalids

How many generations of tanks have come and gone without even firing a round on the border or on enemy..

This another way of comeback for Arjun lobbists -- the DREDOs and the Horsewalas

THE T 90

The T-90 is a Russian third-generation main battle tank that is a modernisation of the T-72 (it was originally to be called the T-72BU, later renamed to T-90). It is currently the most modern tank in service with the Russian Ground Forces and Naval Infantry. Although a development of the T-72, the T-90 uses a 125mm 2A46 smoothbore tank gun, 1G46 gunner sights, a new engine, and thermal sights. Standard protective measures include a blend of steel, composite armour, and Kontakt-5 explosive-reactive armor, laser warning receivers, Nakidka camouflage and the Shtora infrared ATGM jamming system. The EMT-7 electromagnetic pulse (EMP) creator is used in testing but not fitted to T-90s in active service.[3] It is designed and built by Uralvagonzavod, in Nizhny Tagil, Russia

ARJUN MK 2

DRDO chief V.K. Saraswat, also the scientific adviser to the defence minister, told HT at Aero India-2011: "The new variant will have several modifications including superior missile firing capabilities."[76] On June-2011 the Mk-II begun to undergo trials at Pokhran ranges in Rajasthan. The Mk-II is also expected to go through its winter trials later the same year.[77]
According to CVRDE the Director P. Sivakumar, the Arjun Mark II will have a total of 93 upgrades, including 13 major improvements. The major upgrades would be missile-firing capability against long-range targets, panoramic sight with night vision to engage targets effectively at night, containerisation of the ammunition, enhanced main weapon penetration; additional ammunition types, explosive reactive armour, an advanced air-defence gun to engage helicopters; a mine plough, an advanced land navigation system and a warning system which can fire smoke grenades to confuse laser guidance.[78] Other upgrades are an enhanced Auxiliary power unit providing 8.5 KW (from 4.5 KW) and an improved gun barrel,[79] changes in the commander's panoramic sight with eye safe LRF, night vision capability including for driver, digital control harness, new final drive, track and sprocket.[80]
Arjun tank hull and turret has been modified to achieve the target weight of about 55 tons from 59-64 tons. Elbit is helping to enhance its firepower and battlefield survivability and IMI is helping to augment Arjun Mk II's mobility, redesign its turret and hull and improve its production-line processes.[81]
The development trials of the Mark II tanks started on June 22, 2012, at Rajasthan's Pokhran field firing range which will continue for the next two months and will mainly focus on 19 parametres, according to DRDO spokesperson Ravi Gupta. DRDO will start production of 124 Arjun Mark II tanks for the Indian Army after the success of these trials. The tank commander's thermal imaging (TI) night sight, the tank's operation in "hunter-killer" mode, the tank's missile firing capability from its main gun, and a laser missile warning and counter measure system are among the crucial upgrades that will be tested.[82]
The Mark-II version completed most user trials except missile testing, which is slated to take place in summer (April-May) of 2013. Since May 2012, user trials had been done in Avadi and Pokhran. So far, the response to the new features of Arjun Mark II was favourable. According to Director, CVRDE P. Sivakumar the Arjun Mk II could fire missiles accurately up to a range of 2 km. Owing to the experience while designing and building the first version work on Arjun Mk-II was completed in 2 years

My vote goes for Arjun MK2, But it would be better if given multiple choice option..

I prefer for the Present, Arjun MK-1/MK2 replace T-72M1 from Rajasthan & Punjab borders, T-90S will be used all over India including N.E..

Future Should be Arjun Series with Just T-90S..

The T-90 is, in fact, the replacement for T-72. However, i believe that T-72 has quite a bit of service life left considering the mordernised Indian version Ajeya.

One big issue with the army is the weight of these tanks which plays a major role in their transportation given the fact that we have a doctrine of preparing for a two front threat. Neither the Indian Railway's carriages nor the rail tracks are capable enough to transport the tanks weighing over 50-55 tonnes a piece. Road transport, not for rapid deployment. That is one reason why army hesitated in inducting Arjun & when inducted they are permanently placed i believe, in western region. The Chinese border is more treacherous, mostly mountainous and provides a very low to almost no possibility of tank battles. However, one has to prepare for the worst case scenario. So which tank can be deployed in that region, T-90 or Arjun? Its no rocket science to conclude that, of course the tank which is lighter, maneuverable, fuel efficient and more evolved. In short, T-90.

T-72 makes up the bulk of total number of tanks with the Indian Army and there are valid reasons for that. So if there has to be a replacement, it has to be T-90 undoubtedly.
Tank Ex or MBT Karan if ever get evolved to suit the requirements of the army, then my vote goes for that but as of now they are nowhere in sight. So for the sake of military preparedness, go for more T-90s till we come up with a better indigenous option.

So for numbers, T-90s, for crushing the enemy with brute force, Arjun.

PS- I always fantasized Leopard 2 and Merkava. I know it sounds ridiculous but can't help the fan-boy spirit in me. Oh, get those beauties, paint them in our colours and put them on display or whatever.

Merkava

Leopard

Arjuns are already transported via railway to there area of deployment, Carriages were in use since 2007 in Indian Railway..

Yes, but still a big headache to move them around. So a lighter and capable indigenous option would be more viable for deployment on all possible fronts.

i think arun mk1/mk2/mk3 etc should replace t-72 immediately and t-90s(which are already inducted) by the next decade.the current t-90 is vastly inferior to arjun and the only role it can be assigned is to face a possible chinese attack led by modernized type 96 mbt which the chinese have placed in the tibet region.the t-90 is not suited to the hot and humid desert conditions in the thar desert and can only be placed in cold climate(similar to cold temperate russian weather) which we have in the china border and north eastern state.

An equipment is as good or bad as the operator of such equipment/

One must never forget the most modern Patton (of that time) of the Pakistani Army vs World War 2 vintage Shermans of the Indian Army.

One has also to remember terrain on either side of the border on which the tanks are to operate as also the bridge classifications on both sides of the border. The area that should be taken into consideration is the anticipated reach of the final thrust.

Are bhai, Tank hi banate rahen kya ?

Rifles, Mortars, guns, radars, drones, grenades, howwitzer, vehicles, TEL , Tejas, ships, submarines etc etc vagera, vagera kaoan banayaega ?

It is question of assigning priorities against limited money ?? For DREDOs Arjun seems to be the only priority !!

T-72 is fine considering Pak Army tank profile..No abrahama is going to come to Pakistan, If it comes then we will see..

This forum keeps campaigning only for tanks and that too arjun as if this is "Arjun Tank Forum"......

Arjun, the lgendary warrior stands thororughly defamed by this tank... they should call it something else.

But those scientists seems to be wasting their entire day and night propogating and publicising Arjun rather than making it.

I think the ideal replacement for the T-72 tank is the Anders light Tank from Poland, it is light, has a great interior design and could pack a mean punch. Light enough to be carried on the C-17 deployed quickly, may be even 2 can be carried on the C-17 depending on the weight.

I wonder what happened to this since it was going to be made in India by BEML. I think we can buy out the TOT and tweak it for ours needs, 2000 of these would be nice addition. 1500 Anders, 1500 T-90s upgraded to M standards and 3000 Arjuns in Mk-2/3s should be an ideal tank force.

The Anders is also the ideal design for Namica, Akash launcher, IFV, perhaps an Indian version of Pantsir etc.
