Last week, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) of Nigeria issued a press release stating that a large consignment of fake anti-malarial generic pharmaceuticals labelled `Made in India' were, in fact, found to have been produced in China.

New Delhi has registered ``strong protest'' with the Chinese mission and China's foreign trade ministry, according to sources in the commerce ministry.

India's High Commissioner in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, Mahesh Sachdev, had earlier written to then commerce secretary GSK Pillai, alerting him to the large seizure: ``While this is a case of a Chinese company exporting fake `Made in India' labelled medicines which has been accidentally exposed, it is unlikely to be an isolated incident. Indeed there is no reason for Nigeria to be the only country to be receiving such consignments.''

His letter went on to say: ``Fake foreign-made generics carrying `Made in India' label can do tremendous harm to our interests. It not only dents our image and takes our legitimate market share, it also erodes the distinction between generic and fake medicines that we have been campaigning for at WHO and WTO''.

Commerce ministry sources said: ``We have had many complaints about such fake drugs from China being offloaded as Indian drugs in countries like Ghana, South Africa, Ivory Coast and West Africa — in general, where India has a substantial market share. But so far there has been no formal complaint. This is the first time that such a large international consignment has been seized and this will be taken up strongly with the Chinese side.''

Sachdev in his letter said that he had spoken to the director-general of NAFDAC Dr Paul Orhii who said that the Nigerian preference for generics made such cases of fake drugs more common. He expressed NAFDAC's determination to curb circulation of substandard fake medicines.

India and China have been held primarily responsible for fake drugs in the Nigerian market in particular and Africa in general. About 60% of drugs in Nigeria are imported. Between 2001 and 2007, more than 30 Indian and Chinese companies were banned in Nigeria for exporting fake drugs to the country.

However, Dr Mira Shiva of the Initiative for Health Equity and Society (IHES) told TOI that both India and China being large manufacturers of generics, multinational firms would look to discredit the two countries and label their drugs as substandard, so that they would have greater access to the African markets. She warned against the two countries trying to run each other down before ascertaining the full facts in the case to rule out any orchestration, but added that India ought to be more careful to ensure the quality of the drugs exported as well as sold domestically.

Come on people. The Chinese passing of fake drugs as "made in India" is really annoying. This gives way to the companies of other countries a chance to enter into the market. They must know that they must not end up degrading any country's products like this. It is a shame on the Chinese government to do something like this.

Its money at all costs for the Chinese. But to brand it off as made in India shows they are cowards as well.
This is probably the tip of the iceberg. It may be more rampant and can hurt Indian interests world wide by getting Indian companies banned all over for selling fakes.
Then the Chinese companies can dominate by having a virtual monopoly as the west will not be able to compete with it.

Frankly, I am filled with admiration for this chicoms, really. They ruthlessness with which they are trying to kill of their competition is praiseworthy and even worth emulating by India. Ethics.....blah blah dont work in Internation politics. Countries do certain things because they can, becoz no one can hold them accountable. Credit to Chicoms that they have grown so powerful, I wish India would do the same but within the boundaries of Dharma.

All the members in this thread have every reason to be furious about such a Chinese "Dhhanda" to spoil the name of other countries to fill up own pockets.

I would like to bring a spotlight who is a biggest culprit in this serious business. This culprit is non other then Indian Government itself. It is because of a lethargy with which our Indian government don't regulate Pharama companies in its own countries, in turn this very lethargy gives vengence for a country like China to market the substandard medicine in the name of India. Even in our own country, fake drugs business is thriving harmoneously without anyone's notice and hence we simply do expect other countries to take advantage of such very loopholes.

A moot question is that, how does Indian government was unaware about such a unruly business in International market and require Nigerian Government to ring the panic button? a very simply answer is that when Indian government don't have a a close watch on its domestic Market then how the hell we can expect it to take note of international one.

So we first need to condemn Indian Government for its careless behavious which can cost not only prestige of this very country but also create danger to the life of all other thousands of patients.

This is not only disturbing but also annoying , this was done intentionally by the Chinese and also having being backed by their Govt., my opinion is this , and Chinese are showing that they are truly our adversary and needs that tag officially from us, and also from our parts more vigilance should be needed,

This is simply no excuse and no logic found there in this comment, furthermore I apprehend that it is a biased view produced by a biased organisation without having any proper knowledge or deliberate ploy to equate goodwill of the companies of the two countries, to give clean chit to Chinese crime.

    Regards

    mate,
I was not suggesting that India follow China blindly. What china has done is extremely wrong, those fake drugs can lead to the death of several innocent lives. That makes China a murderer. And I never intended India to follow such a bad action. All I was saying was that we(India) need to learn to be ruthless in crushing the competition at the global level.

Alrhough I agree with Zoom but isn't we are more then happy in getting too much self critical?
It is something like you ordered for a door in home. Now a door is just a door it is made of wood only. Now some thief some breaks the lock and gets in to the house and succedes in stealing and house owner start criticizing the capenter for defects.
    Just my personal observation.

India is no saint when it comes to fake drugs. It's rampant here. But it's usually a copy of the original, with the same brand name.Obviously it's spurious and injurious to health.
China doesn't leave its own kids and feeds them poisonous food.

But selling to a third country fakes with the branding of another country? Ingenious.
