China will not copy Western political system: Hu

BEIJING, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Although political structure reform is an important part if its overall reform, China will never copy a Western political system.

"We must continue to make both active and prudent efforts to carry out political structure reform, and make people's democracy more extensive, fuller in scope and sounder in practice.

"However, we will never copy a Western political system," said Chinese President and general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Hu Jintao at the opening of the CPC's 18th National Congress on Thursday.

Hu said since the policy of reform and opening up was introduced, the CPC has reviewed both positive and negative experiences.

"As a result, we have made a major progress in developing socialist democracy and opened up, " he said.

On curbing corruption, Hu urged leading officials in all levels, especially those in high rankings to exercise strict self-discipline and strengthen education as well as supervision over their family and staff, and to avoid seeking privilege.

"If we fail to handle this issue well, it could cause the Party's collapse and the fall of the state," he said.

The president said the CPC must maintain a tough position in cracking down on corruption at all times, conduct thorough investigations in major corruption cases and work hard to resolve problems of corruption that directly affect the people.

"All those who violate Party discipline and state laws, whoever they are and whatever power or official positions they have, must be brought to justice without mercy," he said.

On another development, Hu said China committed to peaceful development by following the path of peaceful development and firmly pursue an independent foreign policy of peace.

He said China opposed to hegemony and power politics in all its forms, and will never seek hegemony and engage in expansion.

"We call for promoting equality, mutual trust, inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutually beneficial cooperation in international relations and making joint efforts to uphold international fairness and justice," he added.

A total of 2,309 delegates attended the congress.

Hu Jintao outlines hurdles before China's progress

BEIJING: After 10 years at the helm presiding over China's expanding economy, the country's supreme leader Hu Jintao, during his 100-minute speech at the party congress at the Great Hall of the People, linked increasing corruption to social unrest, asking top party officials to supervise their own family and staff following reports of graft charges against them.

In his last big address as the Communist Party boss, President Hu, 69, spoke about the need of reforms on all aspects concerning Chinese life: from social to political, and from economic to environmental. He emphasized on the need to maintain harmony and balance by guarding against unrest and managing social contradictions.

"Social contradictions have clearly increased... There are many problems concerning the public's immediate interest in education, employment, health care, housing, public security and law enforcement," Hu said. While the solution was to open up to reforms, he said, "We will never copy a western political system. We should give full play to the strength of socialist political system and draw on the political achievements of other societies."

Hu also used a novel term when he vowed that the Communist Party will never follow the "wicked way" of changing course. His speech was broadcast live and apart from social issues, Hu gloated about the success of the party's economic policy of "reform and opening up". But economic success has left in its wake a series of corruption scandals as well. Addressing party colleagues on corruption, Hu said, "Exercise strict self-discipline and strengthen education and supervision over families and staff... Leading officials at all levels must readily observe the code of conduct on clean governance and report all important matters."

Hu mentioned corruption 16 times during his 46-page speech and stressed on party discipline after scandals involving members of the powerful Politburo before the 2,270-strong National Congress. Bo Xilai, who is now awaiting criminal prosecution, was thrown out of the party early this month for being implicated in the murder of British businessman. His wife, Gu Kailai, was given suspended death sentence in the same case.

Then, a senior associate of Hu was sidelined after the aide's son crashed a Ferrari he could not possibly have afforded to own. Outgoing premier Wen Jiabao and his family, too, have been accused of amassing wealth by the New York Times.

"All those who violate party discipline and state laws, whoever they are and whatever power or official positions they have, must be brought to justice without mercy," Hu said pointedly.

"We must ensure that all are equal before discipline, that nobody has the privilege of not observing it and that no exception should be made in its enforcement," Hu said ahead of his retirement as the country's president and party general secretary.

They have copied every other western thing...
If the Chinese Communists copy the western political system, then they will find themselves turfed out and hoofed out!

That is their fear.

well, partly true in appearance, Money-driven the most evident, but the bottom of heart is still far apart.

Money driven is not copied from the West. China has always been a money and status driven society. In fact Chinese are more money or status driven than Westerners.

Always is too short if "always" means 35 years, chasing money 35 years ago is something to be ashamed of.
Confucius doctrine stipulates: "Sacrificing justice to get rich, it is something for me as remote as wondering clouds "

That's why Confucius wrote that particular teaching because the money illness was already rampant in China during his time (and even before). He wanted to correct it, obviously he wasn't successful.

If DD had not intervened, I would have shown this silly little man a worldwide map on sizes. Personally I believe size is not important, but for people who do, such maps sure put them in their place.

Yijiuliuer,

You keep bringing India into topics that discuss China to distract the debate or topic that is critical of China. This has been your behaviour/tactic all along. This is last warning to you. If you continue you will be infracted or banned as necessary
