China unveils 2900 kph super-maglev train

    The world’s fastest train is on the way, although the technology remains at a testing stage in the laboratory.

    China is testing the so-called super-maglev train, which operates in a vacuum tube and could reach as high as 2,900 kilometers per hour, Hong Kong Commercial Daily reported Monday.

    Chinese researchers at the Applied Superconductivity Laboratory of Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu have successfully tested a concept train encapsulated in a vacuum tube, which would help reduce the speed limitations imposed by air resistance on regular maglev trains.

    Dr. Deng Zigang, who led the project, said his team has already successfully reached a speed of 25 km per minute, and researchers are now working on a vacuum tube, which could lift the speed limit to 50 km per minute in the future.

    If successful, that would mark a great breakthrough in China’s ambitious plan to export the high-speed train to the United States.

    China is now in talks to build a high-speed railway that would connect the Chinese capital Beijing with the continental US. The China-US rail link may use the magnetic levitation technology, according to media reports.

    The entire journey from China to the US would take only two days.

    Currently, the Shanghai Maglev Train connecting Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road subway station operates at a speed of over 430 kilometers per hour, making it the world’s fastest passenger-carrying train.

    i call it bullshit, 2900 km/h =1801 mph a commerical jet travel around 400-500mph, speed of sound is 1225 kph your train is 3 time the sound at the speed of NATO 7.62 bullet :rolleyes:

    It's entirely possible if the train travels in a tunnel bereft of air resistance.

    However, it probably still is bullshit for a different reason in that moving an obj at a speed of 2900 kph in a 100m long testing facility is different from real world conditions

    well US put rocket sled in Nevada that can travel at mach 5+ over several mils, i wont call it a train though.

China's first low and medium speed magnetic suspended railway was put into test run in Changsha on Dec. 26. China has independent intellectural property rights on the 18.55-kilometer railway.

    A trial run of China's first domestically designed and manufactured magnetic levitation line in Changsha, Hunan Province, began on Saturday.

    The maglev shuttles between Changsha's south railway station and the airport, with one stop in between. It takes about ten minutes to complete the 18.55-km journey, according to a statement from operator Hunan Maglev Transport Co.

    The maglev line uses "Zhuifengzhe" (wind chaser) trains designed and manufactured by railway manufacturing giant CRRC in Hunan's Zhuzhou.

    The 48-meter-long train can carry 363 people in three carriages. It can achieve a maximum speed of 100 km per hour.

    The domestically produced moderate-speed maglev line costs about 195 million yuan (about US$30 million) per kilometer, not including relocation fees. It is highly economical in terms of construction and maintenance costs, according to the statement.

    When their is air connectivity between the US and China why go for rail link ?
    What is the purpose ? Is this an attempt to invest in something for the sake of investing ?
    And how reliable is traveling in a tunnel ? Without a link this thread is a big gas filled BS.
