SCO Members Conduct Joint Military Exercise in China - Aydınlık Daily

The member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will stage an anti-terrorism military drill in China from August 24 to 29, a Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.

(Xinhua) Code-named "Peace Mission 2014",the joint drill will take place at the Zhurihe training base in Inner Mongolia, Yang Yujun told a monthly press briefing.

Founded in Shanghai in 2001, the SCO groups China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It has Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan as observers and Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka as dialogue partners.

The exercise will be the fifth multinational drill under the SCO framework and will aim at deterring the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, safeguarding regional peace and stability and improving the militaries' coordinated ability to fight terrorism, Yang said.

The exercise will not target any third party, he added.

On Russia's "Aviation Dart 2014" international aviators' race, Yang said a squad of the Chinese Air Force will take part in the race in late July in a bid to upgrade cooperation between China and Russia and increase experience sharing with aviators from other countries.

Rudderless control could bring supersonic submarines from sci-fi to reality | Defense Update:

Aug 24, 2014

Chinese scientists are studying the applications of supercavitation to propel large bodies underwater at high speed. Scaled up into a full size 'supersonic submarine', such vessel could make the distance from Shanghai China to San Francisco, CA in less than two hours.

Chinese scientists are studying the applications of supercavitation to propel large bodies underwater at high speed. A team of scientists at the Harbin institute of Technology's Complex Flow and Heat Transfer lab headed by Prof. Li Fengchen has come up with a new approach to create an 'air bubble' required for rapid underwater travel.

"We are very excited by its potential" Prof. Fengchen said, explaining that the unique attributes of the team's new concept is the ability to control the vessel within the air bubble, without a rudder. Lack of steering and control has limited the application of this concept to unmanned bodies such as torpedoes, that were fired in a straight line because they had limited ability to turn. "Our method is different from any other approach, such as vector propulsion or thrust created by an engine" Li said.

(The Chinese liquid spray membrane will employ rudderless control of submarines, travelling through supercavitation phase, enabling high speed travel underwater.)

The supercavitation propulsion concept was explored in the Soviet Union in the 1960s, but implemented only with torpedoes (Shkval). In the US, applications are explored with hovercraft and counter-mine applications. (New Scientist Magazine, 7-2000) The Chinese team's concept employs the application of a liquid spray around the underwater vessel's body, creating a membrane on its surface, reducing the drag at low speed. As the speed reaches 40 knots (75 km/h) and higher the vessel would enter the supercavitation state. At this stage, the membrane that wraps the vessel would help with steerin by applying variable levels of friction in the appropriate axis. remain Wang said even he had been kept in the dark about recent supercavitation developments in China. "By combining liquid-membrane technology with supercavitation, we can significantly reduce the launch challenges and make cruising control easier," he told the South China Morning Post.

Scaled up into a full size 'supersonic submarine', such vessel could make the distance from Shanghai China to San Francisco, CA in less than two hours. A submarine that could be traDespite these breakthough researches, supercavitating super-submarines are still decades away, Li said, including the introduction of powerful underwater rocket engines that could give the vessels longer range and higher underwater velocity, up to supersonic speed. The effective range of Russian supercavitation torpedoes (Shkval) that could travel at a speed of 200 knots (370km/h) was between 6-8 nm (11-15 km).

Engine issues mean China can't power J-15, J-16 fighters

China is unable to produce advanced fighters such as the J-15 and the J-16 in large numbers because it lacks the proper engines to power the aircraft, according to the Moscow-based Military-Industrial Courier on Sept. 8. According to Kanwa Defense Review, a magazine operated by military analyst Andrei Chang, also known as Pinkov, China is not even capable of producing J-11B fighters due to problems with Shenyang Liming Aircraft Engine Company's WS-10A engine. Similar problems led the People's Liberation Army Navy to cancel their plans to install the WS-10A in the J-15, a carrier-based fighter designed to serve aboard the Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier. Both the PLA Air Force and Navy Air Force have asked to replace the WS-10A with the more reliable Russian-built AL-31F engines, the magazine stated. China is unlikely to get enough AL-31F engines to power all of its J-15 and J-16 fighters when production starts on the aircraft however. The only option left for China is to stop producing more advanced fighters until it is capable of designing the engines the aircraft need. Sources from the Chinese aviation industry told the Military- Industrial Courier that the PLA is losing its patience with the WS-10A engines. Without proper competition among state-run engine producers, the source said that China is unable to design the engines it needs to power its new aircraft. The Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China suggested that the PLA Air Force use domestic engines anyway to boost the economy.

the sarcasm to the above faked news--so called " WS10A engine issues " is right the earlier "hot thread" on this sub-forum....

http://defenceforumindia.com/forum/china/62991-chinese-top-gun-barrel-rolled-over-us-plane.html

the leading actor of one side is right the J11B with WS10A engine... the #24 J11B of PLA Navy Aviation shore-based Fighter Regement of the 8th Div..... this is the fourth J11B regiment in PLA service ,the unit possesses 8 J11BS two-seater+ 16 J11B ...another 50 J11B/BS are entering into the PALN Aviation service...

Shots by P-8 and P/EP-3...

the piolt

pilot was trying to showcase the weapon load -two PL12 and two PL8 under the wing- to the intercepted airplane pilots, this is a standard interception maneuvering ...

the #8 J11BS and #20 J11B from the same unit...the bright WS10A engine Nozzle is quite noteable.

bulbous bow with the Type2XX sonar...
--------------------------
the following pic is another launch of some export vessel project in some other shipyard...normally, the bulbous bow would be fitted on after the launch in the dry dock...

but this shipyard is using the floating dock to launch the newly built vessels, so the bulbous bow was fit before the launch... following pic is the one built in the same shipyard on the same floating dock...since it is not a Military ship, pixelate is not necessary ...that pixelate is necessary measures for the reason we all could understand.

Algeria orders Chinese corvettes and German frigates - Hedley Brampson

The Algerian Ministry of Defence has ordered three large corvettes from China and two MEKO A-200 frigates - with an option for two more - from Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

The first of the three C-28A corvettes that China's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Group is building for Algeria arrived in Malaysia on 6 October having completed the first leg of its voyage to North Africa.

Named Adhafer (920), the vessel docked at the Boustead Cruise Centre in Port Klang for a two-day replenishment stop before it continues to Algiers. The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) issued a press release saying 20 contractors from Hudong-Zhonghua are accompanying the vessel's 120 crew.

An RMN officer told IHS Jane's that, beyond the normal naval courtesies, RMN officers would not be visiting the vessel to inspect Adhafer as previously planned. The officer added that the vessel was not expected to make any additional port calls before arriving in Algeria.

The C-28A corvettes built for Algeria have a length of 120 m and a full-load displacement of around 3,000 tonnes. Weapons include a single 76 mm NG-16-1 gun, two quad launchers for C-802 anti-ship missiles mounted transversely amidships, an octuple FM-90N launcher for short-range HQ-7 surface-to-air missiles, two 30 mm Type 730B close-in weapons systems (CIWS), two triple-tube torpedo launchers that fire through an opening in the hull, and four 24-barreled decoy launchers.

Russia, China sign contract worth over $2 billion for Su-35 fighter jets

China is to buy a batch of 24 Sukhoi-35 fighter jets from Russia in a deal worth more than $2 billion, an industry source told Reuters on Thursday, in a move that may help the Kremlin's strained finances.

A spokeswoman for Russian state holding Rostec confirmed a deal between the two countries had been signed involving Su-35 fighter jets, but declined to provide details.

The deal makes China the first foreign buyer of the Su-35, one of Russia's most advanced military aircraft, and is one of the largest contracts for military jets to have ever been signed between the two countries.

Russia and China have been in talks for several years over the Su-35s, and in 2012 the two sides signed a preliminary agreement for Beijing to buy some of the jets, the Kommersant newspaper reported.

Arms sales are a rare bright spot in an otherwise gloomy economic picture for Russia, whose economy is suffering from weak oil prices and Western sanctions over the Ukraine conflict.

Moscow has sought to deepen trade and financial ties with Beijing following the chill in relations with the West over Ukraine, but some analysts are skeptical as to whether the drive has yielded much in the way of early results.

It is not clear when China will pay Russia the more than $2 billion fee for the Su-35 jets.
