First picture of Long March 6 rocket.

As one of the new generation rocket family, the Long March 6 is designed to be a light capacity, "high-speed response" rocket, compensating for the heavy lift Long March 5 and the mid-heavy lift Long March 7 rocket families. It will be capable of placing at least 1,000 kilograms (2,200 lb) of payload into a sun-synchronous orbit.

China and Russia may hold joint naval drill in the Mediterranean
Russia and China have agreed to conduct a joint naval drill in the Mediterranean Sea, a Russian media report cites the Defense Ministry. The countries' fleets are currently involved in an intl operation to escort the Syrian chemical weapons stockpile.

The Defense Ministry said on Sunday that group of Russian naval officers deployed onboard a heavy nuclear missile cruiser "Peter the Great" visited Chinese frigate Yancheng.

"On board the Chinese patrol ship, Russian sailors discussed with their foreign counterparts the possibility of joint tactical exercises in the Mediterranean Sea. Under the agreement, such exercises can be carried out in the near future in an effort to improve the level of operational compatibility between Russian and Chinese warships during joint operations in the eastern Mediterranean," the statement from the Ministry of Defense said.

The main aim of the joint naval exercise would be to increase the level of operational cooperation between the two navies designed to tackle terrorist threats and improve joint rescue operations at sea, the Ministry explained.

On January 7, both counties escorted the first consignment of Syrian chemical weapons materials that has left the country on a Danish ship. This became the first practical interaction between the Russian and the Chinese navies.

The Chinese Department of Defense noted that Captain Pyshklov, commanding officer of the Mediterranean Combat Group of the Russian Navy, praised the performance of the Yancheng during the escort operation, while his counterpart, Li Pengcheng spoke highly of the important role the Russian Navy played in the escort operation for the ships transporting Syria's chemical weapons.

In July, Russia and China held a three-day joint naval military exercise. The "Naval Interaction-2013" in the open waters off the Port of Vladivostok became China's largest overseas military exercises in terms of the number of troops deployed outside its territorial waters. Seven Chinese warships including four destroyers, two frigates and one comprehensive supply ship took part in the war games.

Both Russian and Chinese ships have polished their skills in joint air-defense and maritime replenishment. They have also practiced tackling submarine threats and tested their skills in joint escort and in rescuing a hijacked ship while shooting maritime targets.

Russia and China have regularly held joint naval drills since 2005 within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. However, "Naval Interaction-2013" was only the second exercise conducted outside the SCO: the first was held in April 2012.

In recent years, the Chinese navy has participated in a series of joint exercises in the Pacific and Indian oceans, while Chinese ground forces have taken part in land war games organized by the SCO.

China conducts full-scale
island assault exercise with
massive amphibious vessels

For the first time, all of the PLA Navy's three gigantic Type 071 Amphibious Transport Dock vessels were deployed last week in a large naval exercise in the tense South China Sea, simulating in full an island-taking assault.

Also participating in the drill were PLAN's destroyers, frigates, military helicopters and possibly submarines. The Yuzhao-class Type 071 amphibious transport dock ships are the PLAN's largest vessels, except for its lone aircraft carrier, the Liaoning. With 20,000-ton displacement, each measures 689 feet long and 92 feet wide. It can carry 15-20 amphibious assault vehicles and 500-800 troops, an ideal vessel for island taking operations.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy may build three Liaoning-class aircraft carriers to prepare for a potential conflict with Japan in the Asia-Pacific region, according to the Canada-based Kanwa Defense Review operated by Andrei Chang, also known as Pinkov.
-

Light aircraft carriers such as the Liaoning and Japan's Izumo have become vital for the PLA Navy and Japan Maritme Self-Defense Force amid territorial disputes between the two countries, the article said. It added that Japanmaybecome an even greater threat to China if the country successfully introduces a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship from the United States and deploys its F-35B fighters with vertical take-off and landing ability aboard the ship.
To face Japan in a potential combat situation, thePLANavy needs to construct at leastthreeaircraftcarriersbased on the Liaoning — which was refitted from the Soviet-era carrier Varyag purchased from Ukraine Kanwa said.
Meanwhile, if Japan is unable to purchase the Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, the Izumo alone can carry at least 24 F-38B fighters after the vessel's fuel supply facility is removed, while Tokyo will likely choose to purchase cheaper but older AV-8 fighters.
Japan's F-35B fighter is designed mostly for surface attack missions and it is thus unable to compete against China's J-15 carrier-based fighters. But neither China nor Japan is likely to deploy aircraft carrier sagainst each other over a narrow battlefield like the disputed East China Sea, Kanwa said, adding that if the local conflict escalated into a full scale war, it would be up to the United States to decide whether or not to fight for Japan.

Power in numbers: China has more ships than Japan

China has surpassed Japan in the construction and purchasing of new surface combat vessels, according to an Apr. 25 article on the Canada-based Kanwa Defense Review operated by military analyst Andrei Chang, also known as Pinkov.
China's surface combat vessels may not be as good as their Japanese counterparts in terms of quality, the article said, but the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has a greater number of destroyers and frigates equipped with active electronically scanned array radar. The PLA Navy currently has six Type 052C guided-missile destroyers, each carrying up to 49 HQ9 air defense missiles. In addition, the vessel can fire YJ-62 anti-ship cruise missiles, which have a range of 280 kilometers.
The country has also completed the construction of two Type 052D destroyers based on the Type 052C, and the new vessel can carry 64 HQ9 air defense missiles. Four more Type 052Ds are under construction at the Dalian and Jiangnan shipyards.
The PLA Navy will likely operate between 10-12 Type 052C and Type 052D destroyers by 2015, but China will still lag behind the United States and Japan in building quality vessels, according to Kanwa.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) currently has four Kongo-class and two Atago-class destroyers. Equipped with the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System and RIM-161 Standard Missile 3, all six destroyers are twice as powerful as their Chinese counterparts in intercepting enemy aircraft and missiles. The JMSDF destroyers are also better than the PLA Navy destroyers in anti-submarine, electronic and cyber warfare, the article said.
Despite a disparity in quality, China has numerical superiority over Japan. The PLA Navy has 18 Type 054A frigates, while the JMSDF only has nine Murasame-class and five Takanami-class frigates

China Decomissions First Nuclear Submarine

China has decommissioned its first nuclear-powered submarine, Long March 1 (Han Class SSN 401) after more than 40 years of service in the military, the People's Liberation Army(PLA) Daily reported Tuesday. The submarine's nuclear devices have been properly disposed of and scientists have decontaminated the warehouse where nuclear items were stored during the past 40 years. The submarine will be used as an exhibit after it is released from military service, according to the newspaper. China's first nuclear-powered submarine, the Long March No.1, was launched in 1970. It was commissioned to the PLA navy in 1974. The Long March 1 belongs to the Han Class nuclear-powered submarine(Type 091), which was produced based on technologies of the 1950s and 1960s and has short range weapons. With a displacement of 5,000 tons, the class is usually equipped with six torpedo tubes.

Three nuclear subs spotted near PLA Navy's Hainan base

The People's Liberation Army Navy has deployed three nuclear- powered ballistic missile submarines to its South Sea Fleet base on the southern island province of Hainan, according to the Manila-based InterAksyon news website in a report published July 8. The Chinese navy displayed a photo on the internet which suggested that three Type 094 Jin-class ballistic missile submarines are currently stationed at the Yulin naval base in Hainan, according to the report. The paper surmised that the three submarines are there to enhance the power projection of the Chinese navy in any potential conflict against Vietnam or the Philippines in the South China Sea. This may indicate the launch of regular sea patrols by Chinese missile submarines in the South China Sea from Hainan, according to the Washington Free Beacon. Samuel Locklear, US Pacific Command chief, told the website China's submarine force is large and very capable. Locklear told the US House Armed Services Committee this March that the PLA Navy will likely have a credible sea-based nuclear deterrent by the end of 2014. China also has two Type 056 Jiangdao-class guided missile corvettes stationed in Hainan. The vessels, equipped with surface- to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, as well as a 76mm main gun and two 30mm cannon will begin to patrol the disputed waters as well, posing a threat to the operations of the Vietnamese and Philippine navies in waters near the disputed Spratly Islands.

The retirement ceremony for the Chinese submarine chaser "Hai'an" (hull number 650) was held at a naval port in Zhoushan, east China's Zhejiang province, on the morning of July 16, 2014, marking that the "Hai'an" ship, which has been in service for 33 years, is now officially decommissioned. The "Hai'an" ship is the last one of its class in a maritime garrison under the East China Sea Fleet of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) to retire. As new-type frigates successively commissioned to the maritime garrison, the equipment of the garrison is upgrading. Manufactured by the Chongqing Shipyard, the "Hai'an" ship was delivered to the PLA Navy in December 1981, and was named "Hai'an" in 1986. The "Hai'an" ship is 58.77 meters long and 7.20 meters wide, and has a draught of 2.2 meters, full- load displacement of 395 tons, maximum design speed of 30.5 knots and maximum endurance of 7 days and nights. It is learnt that the retired "Hai'an" ship will be used as a target ship.

^ US Says China Tested Anti- Satellite Missile

The U.S. says China has tested a missile designed to destroy satellites and is urging Beijing to refrain from destabilizing actions. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the "non- destructive" test occurred Wednesday. She said a previous destructive test of the system in 2007 created thousands of pieces of dangerous debris in space. Harf said Friday that the continued development and testing of destructive anti- satellite systems threaten the long-term security and sustainability of the outer-space environment that all nations depend upon. China's state-run Xinhua (shihn- wah) news agency, citing a Defense Ministry statement, reported a successful missile interception test conducted from land within Chinese territory late Wednesday. Xinhua did not refer to it as an anti-satellite system. It said such tests could strengthen Chinese air defense against ballistic missiles.
