I was wondering, if there is another major terrorist attack in India whose tracks leads to Pakistan, then is India prepared and capable to strike Pakistan, in case it chooses to retaliate?

Pakistan seems fairly confident, given the missiles and the nuclear capability they have, that India is hand-folded and it can do nothing except diplomatic stunts. Is this how it is going to be, should another major terrorist attack takes place? Let your opinions pour in...

Even if we are well equipped for a war with Pak, I want to know if WAR is going to stop any future terrorist attacks. Unless we destroy entire pak region I don't think terrorist attacks are going to stop.

The auto self destruct button has already been pressed. We do not have to get our hands dirty. We just have to tighten our internal security appratus.

Going to war with Pakistan was, is and will be a political decision. So the right question to be asked is "Is India have political Will to attack Pakistan"

My question is, even if it musters the political will, does it has the required military answer for Pakistan? I would have been confident, if the anti-missile defense system was ready and fully operational.

With ABM system operational can it guarantee that NO missile will hit India?

Military goes to war with what it has not what it can have there is no end to military capability you can dream off end of the day it is the "political will" to finish it off once and for all then you can see the war

That is easier said than done. We all know how hard it is to have keep vigilance in a nation like India, sooner or later, an attack is imminent, (knowing how hard some elements are looking to instigate India against Pakistan for a possible military confrontation) and so we must frame our consequent reply.

Who are those elements? Answer is PA the real power center of Pakistan they really don't have any motto other then fight India or else how they can be in power and India has pressed the self destruct button by not giving them that chance :D

It would certainly instill some confidence of avoiding a possible nuclear catastrophe.

So India should go to war without considering the "nuclear consequences"? Where can we draw the line between political will and sane decision?

India cannot attack pakistan after a terror attack for the following reasons
    1. any attack on pak will unite all the local militant groups(pak-taliban & co) against india. ISI is hungry when india will strike, as it will solve all of its internal problems, and will test india in this frontier.
    2. even upon a full scale war it should be finished in weeks, current situation doesn't not favour it. pak will retreat towards afghanistan and mount a guerilla war against india.
    3. pak should be checkmated decisively. India is working on afghanistan. soon afghans should ally/neutral with india. once this happens a week of co-ordinated offensive is enough.
    4. we have to improve of defenses against the chinese and we need some time for that now
so its a patient game :twizt:

whatever the pakistanis may be, they want to live ,they are NOT suicidal.

India will RETALIATE . The onus of escalation lies on pakistan.
The retaliation does not mean an all out nuclear war which the Pakistanis are always ''BLUFFING'' about.

what really worries the Pak army that they will still loose in a short and intense battle
and THEN people of pakistan will revolt against them (as it happened after 1971) so their hold on the country disappears .

I think that if there is another terrorist strike in India that implicates a Pakistani hand (God knows that is the last thing us Pakistani's need at this time or wish for on Indians) India must not fall into the trap being laid for it by very subtle yet precise channels, as this conflict will only result in GoP's internal dilemmas and sponsorship of terrorism to be used as a uniting force against India. War with India is what upper brass crave for. It is all they know in fact. The millions of Pakistani masses will easily be duped by the government and a series of crippling wars will most definitely ensue.

It is important that the people of Pakistan, the international community and Pakistan's neighbours be allowed to see an isolated GoP having to face it's own lies and deceit and thus minimize any future source of global terror emanating from Pakistan ever again. Further overt wars with India will only be a continual source of terrorism emanating from Pakistan. GoP must learn their lessons of what their disastrous policies have caused Pakistani's and the entire world let alone India. This can only happen with the current trends in place and India shouldn't be so stupid into entertaining this notion of conventional strikes into Pakistan any more than what the Indian media will and has butchered the topic.

So you will be still not sure about nuclear catastrophe so you can not go to war there is NO guarantee of avoiding nuclear catastrophe

War are always destructive you should have the will to take blows or else no war is possible

Even destroying whole Pakistan can not ensure that there wont be any terrorist attack in future. Islamists and terrorists are spread through out the world and surely they will try to avenge for destruction of their 'Mecca' (read Pakistan).

Pak PM said they can not even protect their own citizens from terror attacks which are taking places almost everyday, so it is not possible for them to gurantee anything for India. At the same time it is very very difficult to maintain fullproof internal secuity for a large country like India. What GOI can do is to make it difficult for the terrorists and frustrate them with failures. Mass-awareness, improved intelligence, strict obidience of guidelines for citizens (like check for identity while renting a house to unknown, informing police whenever anything odd is noticed) and well equiped quick reaction teams can limit the fear of terrorist attacks if not eleminate fully. Instead of creating war hysteria , we, the common people of India should understand we are already in war (be it 'proxy' one) and what our responsibiliies to live up in this situation. Effeorts should be made for social improvement and employment as unployments and backwardness brings the youths in wrong path.

Last but not least is not to forget to crush the MAOists as soon as possible as they are becoming a bigger menace for India.

A war is always a possibility when the country is surrounded by two hostile and militarily powerful neighbours. Modernization of armed forces is on to counter such eventualities. But we must not be the starter of a war. Because avenging killing of hundreds we can not put millions of life on stake.

I have a different take on the issue, just as is said, china will fight India till the last Pakistani, same ways India needs to fight its war with Pakistan through a’stan and through other countries/groups that are anti pakistan. Yes when a terror strike happens the emotions are high, but we do need to think out what is best in our interest than get swayed in emotional outbursts and I have my serious doubts that a direct war with Pakistan is ever going to be in our interest.

We have a neighbour in china which is growing by leaps and bounds, as the things stand today, they effectively are 12/13 years ahead of us economically, a difference that we have successfully not allowed to increase for the past almost two decades now, and it has all been possible because we have had a climate where investments can happen, people can have healthy returns on these investments which has yielded us some very good growth rate figures over the years.

The first thing that happens when a war takes place is, the investor pulls out money creating a panic in the financial system of a country, which in it self should be enough to cause a disaster right from flight of money to depreciation of currency which reduces the buying value of a currency which in effect hits out at the inflation to people lining up in front of banks to take out their money so that government does not confiscate that money which totally paralyses the whole system, and all this makes sure the road back to some sort of a sanity to prevail will take a lot of time which could well run into a lot of years.

Now in a war enemy attacks sensitive areas, infrastructure, things of national importance and all these already have had a lot of money invested, so just to rebuild all this will take a lot of time, money and energy. And a war in it self is never cheap, and comes with a huge package of miseries with a lot of disfigured people who get injured and survive for another painful day.

What this will effectively do is set India back by at least a decade and in a worst case scenario by may be two decades from today, and then you will have a bully of a neighbour in the form of china eager to capture arunachal which would be just too happy to see India end up that ways and if seen from their PoV we would have fallen in their best laid trap.

Better strategy would be to finance and arm the enemies of the state of Pakistan to teeth and keep Pakistan bogged down with in its internal conflicts. I doubt anyone here subscribes to conspiracy theories coming out of Pakistan but if one does by any stretch of imagination then India has avenged 26/11 by at least 20 times, with pakistan’s economy in complete doldrums whit a completely demoralized country with not a single shot fired from India, with a growth rate that is expected to touch 9% in another quarter or two, and with a future that is only expected to get better.

    Think smart!

    Well said Ritesh.

We are not in position to engage war. If we get engaged then Yankees and Chinos will be most happiest persons in the world. Yankees will sell their weapons to both.

Pakistan govt easily divert the current hatred towards India and all PA subsidiary agencies like AQ, TB, LeT will come to us.
Our growth will be stopped or crippled to low figure.
When we be wounded, it wont be a big deal for china to invade.

Your main should be internal scurity from the neighbouring fallout.

So always think smarter. Just wait for few more years(by 2015) Yankee will declare pakistan as a Failed state.

Pakistan tasted the cyanide bought from their own money.

    Yes, no, and maybe.

Yes: India has the resources to conduct total war on Pakistan. Our holistic war doctrine ensures that it is just the adversary force which is defeated, with minimal civilian damage.

No: Not because we're both nuclear powers (we were during Kargil conflict, too), but because there's already a conflict in progress in the AF-PAK region. It will affect our ties with the stakeholders of AF-PAK. We shouldn't, either. Wars always come with price-tags, but the price larger than the actual money spent on the war would be repercussions of the international community on us. Regardless of our 'righteousness' and reasons to go to war, we will be perceived as the "aggressor". The disadvantages of being a larger belligerent.

Maybe: There are other means to retaliate. We have to indulge in economic warfare, use our military restraint to paint a nice image of India (which it already has, evident from 7.9% GDP growth rates in a post-26/11 times, amidst a global recession. We must also take on the Pakistani state covertly. There's plenty of cheap labour in AF-PAK who will work for you. All we have to do is keep our borders tight.

It depends more open objectives of such strike, will such strike bear us some fruit in the form of Terrorist elimination. But sad thing is that, Pak is so infested with Terror outfits that it only depends upon Global effort to clear their existance once and for all. Our strike will only give birth to more such terror outifits and India know it quite really well and hence it is using Diplomatic gameplan as its biggest weapon to pressurize PAK to remain within the limits.
