The victims' conditions remain unknown. Various reports suggest only four people were injured in the incident.

Two killed in Empire State Building shooting: Police source

New York: Two people were killed and at least eight were wounded in a shooting outside the landmark Empire State Building in New York City on Friday, according to a New York police source.
One of the dead was the shooter, the source said, adding that there was no apparent link to terrorism.

"I heard the gunshots," said Dahlia Anister, 33, who works at an office near the 102-story Empire State Building. "It was like pop, pop, pop. It was definitely in a bunch."

Aliyah Imam tells Fox 5 News that she was standing at a red light when a woman standing next to her fell to the ground. She says the woman was hit in the hip. She says the gunman was "shooting indiscriminately at people."
The victims were shot shortly after 9 am (1300 GMT) on the sidewalk on Fifth Avenue outside the building in Midtown Manhattan.

The shooting broke out at the height of the tourist season outside one of New York City's most popular attractions, startling tourists and commuters in one of the busiest areas of the city.

The building is two blocks from Pennsylvania Station, one of New York City's main transportation hubs.

The United States has had two other mass shooting cases this summer. On July 20, James Holmes, 24, allegedly opened fire at a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colorado, killing 12 people and wounding 58.

On August 5, a gunman killed six people and critically wounded three at a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee before police shot him dead in an attack authorities treated as an act of domestic terrorism.

The Empire State Building was the world's tallest building for 40 years from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center. Following the September 11, 2001, attacks, it was again the tallest building in the city.

NYC has some of the toughest gun control laws in the US. Is adding more really the answer?

that it wouldn't have happened if everyone had a gun ?
Not everyone necessarily but perhaps just a few armed civilians would have been enough a deterrence.
Unless completely nuts, even a criminal (every sane mind) is driven by self-preservation and doesn't want to indulge if he/she sees a good chance of shot back at.
Firstly the armed citizenry would avoid many such incidents.
Secondly, those that indeed take place would not end up as bad as when the determined gunned murderer is unchallenged

Regards,
Virendra

CNN Reports 8 shot in NYC, Overlooks 19 Shot in Chicago
...as CNN's onsite cameras were focused tightly on the flashing emergency lights outside the Empire State Building, there was absolutely no mention of the fact that 19 people were shot last night in Chicago.

19 shot in Chicago just last night.

This means Chicago is at approximately 37 shooting deaths for the month of August alone. And the city is still on track for 500 gun related deaths this calendar year.

Is there any chance CNN might see a pattern here? Might they not recognize that the Chicago example utterly destroys the claim that gun control saves lives? (Claims most often made by gun control groups and Democrat operatives.)

Look at this way: Thus far, in August alone, more people have been killed in Chicago shootings that in the shootings of Aurora, the Sikh temple, and the Empire State Building combined. But that's not the news CNN wants to report, so it's not the news we hear.

In a perfect world, the CNN headline would have been, "Gun control doesn't save lives, it costs lives. And Rahm Emanuel's Chicago proves it."
