Bangalore Police arrest journalist, 10 others for suspected terror links

Bangalore: Bangalore Police on Wednesday arrested 11 people, including a journalist with a popular English daily, for having terror links. Sources said the arrests were made as they were planning to kill a prominent columnist with a Kannada newspaper.

The 11 people arrested have links with Lashkar-e-Toiba and HuJI, said Karnataka DGP Lalrokhuma Pachau. They had plotted to kill the columnist on Wednesday as he had written an anti-Islam article.

Addressing a press conference, Commissioner of Police Bangalore JP Mirji said a foreign-made pistol has also been recovered. He added that those arrested were also planning to target prominent personalities of the state including MPs, MLAs and journalists.

Mirji said those arrested have links with Saudi Arabia-based LeT and HuJI and it is suspected that they have more supporters in other states. "Targeting individuals could have created communal tension," he added.

Mirji said more details cannot be revealed as the investigation is still on.

Sources say Uttar Pradesh Police had provided their Bangalore counterparts the intelligence about the terror group, which has links with Indian Mujahideen. Sources add that the questioning of those arrested is on.

At least three arrests were made in Hubli in north Karnataka.

Meanwhile, four suspected Indian Mujahideen activists involved in the 2010 Chinnaswamy Stadium blast case were detained in Bangalore on Thursday for questioning, police said.

Fifteen people were injured when two bombs exploded at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 18, 2010 on the eve of the Bangalore-Mumbai IPL semifinal match.

Speaking to reporters in Bangalore, Director General of Police Lalrokhuma Pachau said backgrounds of those picked up was being checked. "Their backgrounds are being checked. After we come to some stage, we will tell you", he said, adding investigation is on.

Good job.

But this:

Mirji said those arrested have links with Saudi Arabia-based LeT and HuJI and it is suspected that they have more supporters in other states. "Targeting individuals could have created communal tension," he added.

DRDO staffer, 10 others arrested for terror links in Bangalore

BANGALORE: An employee of a DRDO division and a journalist were among 11 men, all in their twenties, arrested by Karnataka police for alleged links with global terror outfits. A day after an operation to nab these men ended on Wednesday, police said they had been told the group had plans to assassinate MPs and MLAs from the state, a businessman and two journalists from Bangalore.

Six of them were picked up from Bangalore on Wednesday morning, hours after the others were arrested in Hubli. Police said all had links with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Harkat-ul-Jihadal-Islami. Ejaz Mohammed Mirza, one of the men arrested, works for Airborne Early Warning and Control System, a DRDO division, sources in central intelligence and state home ministry said. An imported 7.65 mm revolver, seven bullets, computers, hard disks, mobile phones and religious tracts were recovered from the men, state police chief Lalrokhuma Pachau told reporters on Thursday.

Bangalore arrests - How a new assasination module was developing

Bangalore arrests - How a new assasination module was developing

The arrest of the 11 youth from Karnataka is just a tip of the ice berg of something big that was in store. Although the police have been associating the name of the Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami with these youth, the investigations so far would go on to show that this was an independent group which had a single point agenda and that was to protect Islam and eliminate all those who appeared to be a threat to the religion.

While the news regarding the Journalist and the Scientist made it to all the headlines, the more important person in this network was a person by the name Akram who goes by the alias Yusuf. If one looks at the background of this man, the HuJI link does surface since he was said to be a close associate of Shahid Bilal, the HuJI commander from Hyderabad who was killed a year after the Hyderabad twin blasts.

Akram whose information was passed on by the Andhra Pradesh intelligence wing is considered to be the leader of this gang and his job according to investigators was to marshal the youth who believed strongly that the religion was under threat. Akram had links with Shahid Bilal since the year 2004 and they had met a couple of times in Saudi Arabia.

While the Bangalore police claimed that the plot was to eliminate journalists and politicians in Karnataka, the bigger news is that there have been several calls found on Akram's phone which gives the indication that it was a nation wide operation. During the investigation it was revealed that he was upset with the manner in which some persons were depicting the religion. He wanted to target those persons who had shown Prophet Mohammad in poor light and there was also an incident which upset him a great deal and that was the wrong depiction of the Kaba stone.

Akram according to the intelligence received funding from the underworld and he had decided to set up forces in every state and target those tarnishing their religion. They worked in a closed network while identifying like minded persons who felt strongly about such issues. Even the hard disks that have been seized by the police have a lot of material regarding atrocities against Muslims and some of the youth who have been arrested spoke very often to colleagues about how the community and religion were always under threat.

While Akram sought to carry out the executions with the help of the underworld, some of the youth who were working in high profile positions were tasked with the job of providing data. While the data regarding some politicians and journalists were provided, the final plan of assassination was not drawn up as yet. They were zeroing down on the targets and were to decide as to who had to be eliminated.

Akram will now be quizzed by the central agencies in order to find out whether he has set up similar groups in other states as well. We have managed to bust the Karnataka module, but his call records are indicative that there were more such operations that were being planned in other parts of the country as well.

Sources say that this groups cannot be directly linked to any terrorist group and were working individually. They had a handler in Saudi Arabia with whom they used to liaison with and also seek funds as and when it was required. The police say that they have been getting funds especially from the underworld apart from arms and ammunition to carry out their operation. While looking at the pistols that were seized they were of very high quality and was not picked up from a local market. However the only ammunition that has been found on them so far are the pistols thus giving a clear indication they were only about assassinations.

This group had it not been nipped so early could have grown stronger. They were in the process of setting up more such groups and identifying targets. They worked independent of terrorist groups since they felt that there would be no heat on them. Moreover many of them especially Akram believed that some wrong which was happening to the religion in the aftermath of the investigations into the terror cases were the handiwork of some politicians and also journalists. They felt that by carrying out a series of assassinations in various parts of the country, they could create a fear which in turn would prompt many to be more careful while speaking about their religion.

However this group was careful to chose their targets and have not included any police official in their list. They have only picked a handful of journalists who they believe were anti Islam and also a couple of politicians who have been speaking their mind off against their community.

This is just the beginning of the investigation and there is more to find out. We believe that similar persons have been identified in the Northern states as well. We are keeping a close watch of the kind of information that is being leaked out to such persons and are also ascertaining the content that many have stored in their computers and also the exact reasons behind it, sources in the investigating agency also pointed out.

Considering the strong links that Akram had with Bilal and the fact that they are from Hyderabad it has also increased the interest of the Andhra Pradesh police to find out if a similar group was functioning in their state as well. It is a relatively tough operation says an officer since there are many unassuming persons who are part of this plot. Investigations are on and we are scrutinising those who could be part of it, an AP police official informed.

For those who would readily swallow the rubbish the Communist Chindu puts out:

Please think twice before believing anything this newspaper prints....They do not have India's or their fellow Indian's best interests in mind

About the assasination cell busted in Karnataka:-
One of the targets of this 11 member gang was a Kannada newspaper journalist named Pratap Simha (Twitter handle: @mepratap)

In an egregious article, The Hindu sought to justify him being a target on account of his "virulent anti minority columns"

He threatened legal action against The Hindu and the newspaper has issued an apology in its online edition.

The apology Hindu article URL below & the apology section quoted:

Clarification

In a report from Bangalore published in the issue of August 31, headlined "Journalist among 11 arrested for 'plotting terror in Karnataka'," the description of some journalists who were purportedly targeted by the alleged plotters as ones "known for their virulent anti-minority columns" was unfair and unwarranted, and escaped gatekeeping mechanisms that are in place to keep such editorialising comments out of the news columns of this newspaper. That description, as well as the loose and imprecise reference to the "divergent ideologies" of two terrorist organisations are regretted and may be deemed as withdrawn. — The Editor

Re: Bangalore arrests - How a new assasination module was developing

Karnataka terror suspects made Skype calls to Saudi Arabia

BANGALORE: The 11 persons arrested on terrorism charges made calls on the internet to contact the kingpins of a plot to kill high-profile individuals in Karnataka. Skype was their favoured mode.

Most of these men, including an engineer with DRDO and a journalist, are highly educated. They used internet telephony to keep their communications with their Saudi Arabia-based kingpins secret, and to cut costs.

"We have seized laptops and accessed the calls made by the suspects. The calls have been traced to Saudi Arabia," deputy chief minister R Ashoka, who is in charge of the home department, told TOI. "More than 100 terrorism-related SMSs and emails have been accessed.''

Police say the arrested men had plans to kill Dharwad MP Prahlad Joshi, MLC and newspaper baron Vijay Sankeshwar and journalists Vishveshwar Bhat and Prathap Simha. Six of them were arrested in Bangalore on Wednesday and the others in Hubli.

The state government has asked Interpol to probe the conversations and share its inputs with India. The suspects also made video calls on smartphones and laptops. Cyber experts say VoIP's biggest advantage over standard telephone systems is its low cost. Internet calls to Saudi Arabia are cost-effective and difficult to trace.

Money trail
Ashoka said: "The home department is writing to the ministry of home affairs ( MHA) asking for its inputs on the flow of money to these operatives. Even Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde has sought details. These people would not have gained strength without proper training. We suspect a couple of them trained in Saudi Arabia. One of the arrested men posed as a Hindu to get a job.'' Sources in the home department said Intelligence Bureau sleuths are camping in Bangalore since Thursday.

Recce of soudhas
The police feel the suspects conducted a recce of vital buildings such as Vidhana Soudha and Vikasa Soudha. "Hard disks from the computers used by the journalist at his workplace and other documents have been seized. The employers of the journalist have cooperated with us," police sources said.

Why scribes were target
Prathap Simha, a journalist with Kannada Prabha, was a target along with his editor Vishveshwar Bhat. The suspects allegedly wanted to kill Simha because he had written a book in Kannada on the Gujarat CM titled "Narendra Modi - Yaaru Thuliyada Haadi" (Narendra Modi - The Untrodden Road) in 2008. "A laptop seized from a suspect contains this book and a picture of Simha interviewing Modi," a senior police officer said. When contacted, Simha said: "I have also written a book on Muhammed Ali Jinnah in Kannada."

In continuing crackdown on the "terror module" busted in Karnataka, city police have arrested a youth in Hyderabad with alleged links to Lashkar and HuJI, taking the number of those detained in this connection to 12.

21-year old Obedulla-Ur-Rehman was arrested in Hyderbad yesterday on the basis of information given by the 11 terror suspects taken into custody in Hubli and Bangalore earlier this week, Police Commissioner Jyotiprakash Mirji told reporters here.

"Obedulla-Ur-Rehman along with others had conspired to kill two corporators and one prominent leader of a Hindu organisation of Hyderabad," Mirji said.

With this, the number of arrests made in connection with the unearthing of the terror module had risen to 12, he said.

City police on 29 August arrested 11 persons — six from Bangalore and five from Hubli — with alleged links to Lashkar-e-Taiba and HuJI and claimed to have foiled their plan to target MPs, legislators and mediapersons besides leader of a Hindu outfit.

Police have so far seized one foreign made 7.65 mm pistol along with seven cartridges, 16 mobiles, 8 SIM cards, 4 ATM cards, three pen drives, two laptops, one motorcycle, one dagger, seven Jihadi books, maps of Chennai, India, Iran and Urdu newspaper clippings from the 11 who have been remanded to 14 days police custody by a court.

Mirji said the laptops and mobile phones seized from the arrested has been sent to forensic laboratory for analysis.

He said police were collecting more information about the handlers of those arrested, believed to be in Saudi Arabia.

A special team constituted to investigate the case was interrogating the arrested, who included a journalist, a doctor and a scientist with Defence Research Development Organisation.

Their Family reactions are
Family members of some of the 11 persons arrested on suspected terror links in Karnataka today claimed their kin were innocent and sought justice.

Maintaining that they were yet to be informed about charges against their kin, the family members of four of the arrested told reporters here that they planned to take legal recourse.

Ata-ur-Rehman Siddique, brother of Muti-ur-Rehman Siddique, a journalist who was among the 11 arrested yesterday for their suspected links to Lashkar-e-Taiba and HUJI, said his sibling was a "hard working sincere and successful reporter" and wanted justice to be meted out to him.

"On the Wednesday night, I got a call from Siddique's friend that he had been picked up by the City Crime Branch. I still do have any information from the CCB," Ata-ur-Rehman Siddique, a businessman based in Hubli, said.

"I have full faith in police and the judiciary. Let proper investigation be conducted. If he is guilty, punish him... We are peace loving people. We want to become good Muslims and above all good Hindustanis. We love our nation. We do not want blasts to happen, disrupting peace and harmony", he said.

Sheikh Rafiq Ahmad Sholapur, father of Dr Jafar Iqbal Sholapur, who was arrested from Hubli, said theirs was a much respected family and three of his children are doctors while another was an engineer.

Sholapur claimed that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar was his neighbour in Badami Nagar in Hubli and he had good equations with the local politicians.

"I was shocked to hear the news of my son's arrest...I have not been told by the police as to the charges on which he has been taken into custody... My request to Karnataka government is, please give justice. If my son is proved innocent, please free him soon. I love my state and my country", he said.

Replying to a question, both Ata-Ur-Rehman and Iqbal said they would be taking legal recourse once they know the charges under which Muti-ur-Rehman and Jafar have been arrested.

A M Mirza, a Railways staff in Hubli and father of another accused Aijaz Ahmed Mirza, a Junior Research Fellow with Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), charged the police with arresting his son "without any warrant".

He said his another son Shoheeb Ahmed Mirza, who has also been arrested, was a student in a city college and worked part time to pursue his education.

Sakina Bi, resident of Bagalkot and mother of accused Yusuf Nalaband, broke down while pleading for the release of her son, "only breadwinner of their family".

She said Yusuf had not called her for the past four days.

Ishad Ahmad, a member of National Human Rights Commission and Association of Protection of Civil Rights, who arranged for the media interaction, said they would contemplate filing habeas corpus petitions and also try and meet the Governor and the Home Minister.

K'taka terrorplot thickens, 5 more held

The Karnataka terror plot has become more complex with the five more arrest — four from Maharashtra and one from Andhra Pradesh — and revelation by the Home Ministry that they were planning to target a defence establishment and a nuclear installation.

Home Secretary RK Singh said that a major terror strike had been averted as interrogation of those arrested in Bangalore revealed that they had a defence establishment and a nuclear installation on their target. "Lashkar and HuJI operatives are handlers of the group. We believe a major threat has been averted with the busting of this module," Singh said.

State ATS sources in Mumbai said that the four terror suspects — all in the age group of 20-25 years — were arrested from Deglur Naka area of Nanded town in Marathwada region of Maharashtra on Friday night. Sources identified the four arrested suspects as Sadiq, Mujabil, Iliyas and Irfan. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the four suspects were allegedly plotting terror strikes in Hyderabad and Nanded.

The four suspects belong to the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and Dindar-e-Anjuman outfits. We had been tipped off that some youths from Marathwada were planning to indulge in terror acts in Hyderabad. We nabbed them before they could indulge in any act," a senior ATS officer said.

Meanwhile, the Bangalore crime branch police arrested 21-year-old Obedulla-Ur-Rehman in Hyderabad and continued their effort to bust the terror network across the country.

According to Bangalore Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji, the Rehman was plotting to kill two councillor and one prominent Hindu leader. Mirji told the media in Bangalore that a special investigation team has been constituted to look into the network and designs of those arrested so far.

"Obedulla-Ur-Rehman, along with others, had conspired to kill two corporators and one prominent leader of a Hindu organisation of Hyderabad," Mirji said.

When asked whether Andhra Pradesh police team was in Bangalore, Mirji said, "We will be sharing information with other (state) police officers and vice-versa. Other agencies will come when we need help".

A police source told The Pioneer that two of the arrested confessed to the police that they had visited Iran and entered Pakistan illegally and met ISI officials. He said, "According to his confession Abdul Hakeem Jamadar along with Dr Zafar went to Iran and later to Pakistan and met ISI officials."

Terror arrests to divert people's attention from Gujarat verdict: CLMC | TwoCircles.net

Hyderabad: Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee of India while condemning the fresh arrest of Muslim youths from different parts of India alleged that these arrests have been planned only to divert nation's attention from the historic court verdict in the Gujarat riot case. CLMC has sought Prime Minister's intervention to stop targeting innocent Muslims.

"Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee strongly condemns the arrest of Muslim youths from different parts of India and expressed that the police action is based upon malicious intention and dishonesty. These arrests are the result of nexus between anti Muslim police groups of Hyderabad and Bangalore working with the support of Hindutva outfits. This committee believes that the main intention of these arrests is to divert the attention of people from the court verdict against the criminals of Gujarat genocide and ongoing genocide of Muslim in Assam," said Lateef Mohammad Khan, General Secretary, CLMC in a statement on Saturday.

....

"Actually these arrests are the part of greater conspiracy which is included in Hindutva agenda to target the educated Muslim youths who are in good professions. Those who are arrested belong to Journalism, Medicine, Science and technology as well as students. By this way Muslim will be looked with suspicion in journalism, and in scientific institutes, and their future will be dark in these fields and they will be denied job opportunity in future," he averred.
