Amount of debris displaced will depend vastly on the soil, sand and rock composition of the mountain ridges. Maybe the French ridge was full of rock and negligible amount of sand.

THERE. Chigai mountains (bakistan nuke test site) is completely covered by "superficial sediments of the Sistan Basin."

Whereas, Hoggar Mountains (French nuke test site) is now a hub for rock climbing, does not have that much superficial deposits.
