The State Department has approved Pakistan’s request to buy almost $1 billion in U.S.-made attack helicopters, missiles and other equipment aimed at fighting insurgents in the country’s mountainous north and west regions.

U.S. defense companies are engaged in a three-way tussle with Russia and China to sell weapons to Pakistan, complicated by the need to avoid upsetting neighbor India and its even larger arms’ import market.

The Pentagon said Monday that Pakistan had requested 15 AH-1Z Viper helicopters made by the Bell arm of Textron Inc., as well as 1,000 Hellfire missiles produced by Lockheed Martin Corp. and a host of other communications and training equipment with a total value of $952 million, according to a notification to Congress, which needs to approve any sale.

Any deal would be structured as a foreign military sale between the two governments.

“This proposed sale of helicopters and weapon systems will provide Pakistan with military capabilities in support of its counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations in South Asia,” said the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which oversees U.S. military exports.

If you are meaning Pakistan acquiring the same, then it could be the Saudis since the Saudis are requisitioning the Pakistan Army for its requirement and the requirement is more for the likes of armed helicopters fighting the insurgents.

Sir India ordered more or less the same Apache and for country as small as Pakistan this is huge boost for them. You still feel they going to use these Cobras exclusively for WOT. Just wait for few years ,china will come up with their version of Hellfires II and Cobras.

Merely 30 gunships cannot support a wide array of formation stretching from POK to Karachi, That too with imported spare and parts so does ammunition ( Meant to run out of strength during war and peace time, Need extra time for overhaul or canabalised ) ..

Where as Indian forces are not relying on just puny number of Apache or MI35 but on 70 Rudras and in near future +100 LCH, More than 10 Rudra already joined the Army, Our concerns are bigger so does requirement, We don`t have to think about little issues ..

Adding to this, Our Mechanized forces have their own Mech AD to make out of what left of PAA Gunships ..

US DEFENDS LATEST SALE OF BILLION-DOLLAR ARMS CACHE TO PAKISTAN

Days after the United States approved a billion dollar sale of military equipments to Pakistan, it has now stepped up to defend the move by arguing that the sale would "enhance" Islamabad's counter-terrorism abilities. U.S. State Department Acting Spokesperson Marie Harf said that the proposed sale would provide Pakistan military capabilities required to conduct counter terror operations in the country, reported the Dawn.

Harf said that the U.S. had a "very close" counter-terrorism relationship with Pakistan "for very good reasons." She added that Pakistanis had a "serious problem" and that is why the U.S. was helping them.

The statements came after the US State Department gave a final nod to the sale of military equipments, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of 952 million dollars, identifying Pakistan as a nation of vital importance for U.S. foreign policy and national interests.

Diplomatic sources said that Pakistan had submitted the request last year, saying that the weapons were needed for counter-terrorism operations in the country's mountainous regions.

The notification said the government of Pakistan had requested a possible sale of :
    15 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters
    32 T-700 GE 401C Engines (30 installed and 2 spares)
1000 AGM-114 R Hellfire II Missiles in containers
36 H-1 Technical Refresh Mission Computers
    17 AN/AAQ-30 Target Sight Systems
30 629F-23 Ultra High Frequency/Very High Frequency Communication Systems
19 H-764 Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation Systems

AH-1Z Helicopters are a good buy, however as kunal as already mentioned 15 Vipers cannot cover the whole terrain therefore cannot make any difference.

Besides, PAK seems also planning to buy WS-10 helis from China.
