'Launch confirms India's readiness for strategic defence'

'Launch confirms India's readiness for strategic defence'

The successful launch of three missiles in the past one week confirmed India's readiness for strategic defence and that the country's missile development and production capability have reached a high maturity level, observed V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister.

Talking to The Hindu soon after the launch of the nuclear weapons-capable Agni-II on Friday, he said the hat-trick of successes has proved the country's capability to develop and produce missiles of any range and the possession of technology to meet any threat profile.

He said that Agni-II Prime surface-to-surface missile would be launched in November and the first flight test of India's longest range strategic system Agni-V (5,000 km range) would be conducted in December. Besides, an interceptor missile test would also be held as part of the plans to put in place Ballistic Missile Defence system.

Dr. Saraswat said Agni-II's performance on Friday was outstanding and all the performance parameters were in copy-book manner, including the terminal event and detonation of the warhead. The Circular Error Probability (CEP) was within a few metres showing that the missile's terminal accuracy was good. The propulsion rockets too performed as per the thrust profile.

During its flight, Agni-II reached an altitude of 220 km and re-entered the atmosphere as the re-entry vehicle withstood temperatures of more than 3,000 deg.C and the accuracy of thermal and aerodynamic loads was proved.

So the test was of A2 and not A2P. So my doubts about the failure of the initial launch due to malfunction creates doubts about our second strike options.

Agni-II prime trial likely

Agni-II prime trial likely - southindia - Orissa - ibnlive

BALASORE: After the successful user trial of 2,000-km range Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) Agni-II recently, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is readying for a developmental trial of its latest variant Agni-II Prime. The maiden test of the missile with a strike range of 2,750 km in December last was a failure.
Defence sources said preparation for the test would start in the Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast after the puja vacation.

"We are planning to carry out the test by October 20. If the preparation is not complete, we would schedule the test for November first week. The test would, however, be done before the maiden test of Agni-V missile in December," said a defence official.

It will be the second developmental test of the Agni-II Prime. The DRDO scientists are yet to taste the success of the missile which will pave the way for the technologists to go for the first test of the Agni-V missile.

The indigenously developed Agni-II Prime missile can hit target at ranges between 2,500 km and 3,000 km. It has been developed to bridge the gap between the 2,000-km range Agni-II and 3,500-km range Agni-III missile. The 700-km range Agni-I and Agni-II have already been inducted in the Armed Forces.

The first experimental trial of the surface-to-surface IRBM Agni-II Prime failed on December 10 last year as the missile deviated from the trajectory and nose-dived into the Bay of Bengal nearly 30 seconds after lift-off. "There was no stage separation. The missile covered only about 15 km before plunging down," said a DRDO scientist.

Even as the defence authorities admitted to the mission's failure, they said many new technologies like Composite Rocket Motor, indigenous Ring Laser Gyro-based Navigation System and Road Mobile Launch were tested during the trial. "We have made some corrections in the missile system and hope it would cover the desired distance," the official said.

The Agni-II Prime is an improvement in terms of accuracy, distance and strength. In addition to extra fuel-carrying capacity, the missile has a new motor in its re-entry vehicle for better manoeuvrability and increased range, a flex nozzle in the second stage to avoid anti-ballistic missile defences and an improved navigation system.

Though the missile is of the size of boosters as in its cousin Agni-II missile it will extend the range by more than 500 km. Few changes have been incorporated in the missile to make it lighter while the weapon system this time has also been provided with greater thrust.

Agni prime coming on tuesday

Agni-II Prime to be test-fired on Tuesday

India is planning to test fire on Tuesday its advanced nuclear-capable Agni-II Prime ballistic missile which has a strike range of around 3,000 km.

The new missile will be an advancement over the existing Agni-2, which has a strike range of 2,000 km. The first test of the missile had failed in December last year due to some technical glitches.

The 'Agni-2 Prime' has been developed by making some changes in the Agni 2 missile and will have the same size of boosters which are there in the existing missile but will have an extended range of 1,000 km.

"We are planning to test-fire an advanced nuclear capable Agni-2 Prime missile by November 15 from a test range in Odisha," Defence Ministry officials said here.

Powered by solid fuel propellants, the 'Prime' will also have a better navigational system and greater accuracy in comparison to the Agni-2 missile.

Newer technologies have also been incorporated in the missile to make it lighter and the weapon system has also been provided with greater thrust.

India has developed a number of variants of the Agni missile series under the Integrated Missile Development Programme (IMDP) with different striking ranges since the 80s.

It is also planning to carry out the first test firing of the Agni-5 ballistic missile by the end of this year, the sources said.

Agni-5 will be able to strike targets in range of 5,000 km and will make India join the league of select nations with such capabilities.

Nrj it should have been tested on Prithvi missile, DRDO cannot waste maiden flight for indigenous ring laser gyro on something as expensive as Agni missile, this being new Agni and is untested.

N-capable Agni-II 'Prime' successfully test-fired

Balasore, Orissa: India successfully test-fired Agni-II prime ballistic missile from Wheeler Island off the Orissa coast on Tuesday.

great news for the agni prime , what is of concern is the slow rate of induction of the missiles into the armed forces , at a given point in time the number of missiles we have and the kind of threat and land mass we have to defend is not proportionate at this point in time

Agni-1 (1,000 Km)
Agni-2 (2,000 Km)
Agni-2 prime (3,000-3,500 Km)
Agni-3 (3,000-5,000 Km)

Now waiting for Agni -5 (5,000 Km+) :thumb:

"While the Agni-II missile has a strike range of 2000 km and Agni-III can hit a target at a distance up to 3500 km, this new variant with a strike range of 3000 km would bridge the gap between Agni-II and Agni-III," they said.
A Defence Ministry spokesman said in Delhi that from now on, the missile would be called 'Agni-IV'.

Since Agni 2 PRIME has more range than Agni 2 and LESS range than Agni 3 we should call it Agni 2 Prime
or Agni 2 A

How come Agni FOUR has LESS range than Agni 3 ?

Anyways many Many thanks to DRDO from A GRATEFUL nation for your tireless efforts in ensuring Indian security
