Afghan security foils suicide bomb plots

Afghanistan's police force has said that a Pakistani army officer is among the men arrested after it broke up a group planning to carry out suicide attacks in Kabul.

Security has been stepped up in the capital, despite the fact that alleged plot appears to have been foiled.

"Just a couple of days ago the police arrested 16 people. Nine of them were actually suicide bombers, all trained outside of Afghanistan," Mohammad Hanif Atmar, the Afghan interior minister, told Al Jazeera.

Asked whether he saw evidence of the involvement of Pakistan or parts of the Pakistani security forces in the alleged plots, Atmar said: "The evidence speaks for itself.

"We are investigating into this matter and we will be soon talking to our Pakistani colleagues.

"And then basically [we will] show this evidence to them and say is this happening based on a policy or is it just a couple of rogue people doing this."

    Heads covered

Pakistan is under international pressure to deal with Taliban and al-Qaeda groups which hide out in the country's northwest tribal regions, from where they launch frequent attacks on Nato troops in bordering Afghanistan.

Al Jazeera was allowed to film five of the suspects accused of attempting to get suicide bomb vests into Kabul, but the man authorities said was a Pakistani soldier was not among them.

Al Jazeera's James Bay, reporting from capital, said that the men, who had their heads covered, looked young, with some of them possibly under 18-years-old.

Videos released by the authorities of other suspects showed prisoners to have suffered injuries. Police said that the injuries were sustained during their arrest, not during interrogations.

Afghan forces have said that the arrests showed that that tightened security around the capital was having some success in preventing attacks.

Fakhar Rehman, a security analyst and senior reporter for Pakistan's AAJ television channel, told Al Jazeera: "So far the Pakistan side have received no confirmed information about this arrest. The identity has yet to be confirmed.

"The military spokesman has no been able to say anything about this arrest. So we are waiting to hear whether Pakistan has been formally informed about this arrest."

"If this arrest has been made and this captain belongs to the Pakistan army this is a very serious development."

    Improved relations

Rehman said that Pakistan and Afghanistan had improved relations recently, stating mutual committments on trade and security.

A battle in Logar province south of Kabul on Friday led to the deaths of two Nato soldiers from the US and five anti-government fighters.

Local security officials said that Afghan air forces, backed by Nato troops, killed 20 Taliban fighters in the northern district of Kunduz, late on Friday.

A car bombing and suicide attacks in the centre of Kabul at the end of February killed at least 16 people. Afghan intelligence officials blamed the attacks on Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistani-based group. It was the deadliest attack in the city since a suicide car bomber killed 17 people outside the Inidan embassy in October.

Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) entered the country following the US invasion in 2001 after the September 11 attacks on the US of the same year.

There are about 90,000 Nato troops in Afghanistan who are slated to begin withdrawing from the country in 2011.

^^ who caught doesnt matter what matters is who was caught. With the rate of Pakistani nationals getting caught in almost all over the world and found to be involved in major terror attacks and major convictions against pak nationals its bound to happen that world will believe afghan govt than the pak national.

even if they provide irrefutable evidence about him isnt it the habit with pak leaders to deny it case in point the Kasab untill some Foreign channel trace out his village in pakistan and then story is being picked by geo and dawn but then also it takes pakistani govt 3 months to accept it.Meanwhile keep on disowning other 9 dead bodies.uff kafir indians had to bury them this year but guess what indian being used to bury bodies of holy warriors for past 20 years .And the country for which they embrace "shahadat" even disowns their bodies.

Kasab was Kasab, here we are talking about a Gov which is limited to Presidential Palace of Kabul with a Hashish Army, they have no 'credibility' at all, last time i heard Karzai was threatening to Join Taliban, awww shhoo shweet eh!!

& moreover what are Indians doing with their 'altruistic motives' in Afghanistan

I never meant its our province, neither is it yours, We all know about innocence & altruistic motives of Indians in Afghanistan, Indians were never a party in Afghanistan & they never will be, Nor are they a part of the solution, Afgh problem can be solved without considering India as a variable

If hashish is the main reason for not trusting afghan govt. then what reasons should be given to to trust pak army which was involved in drug trade from afghanistan all around 1980-2000 with its bed partner in CIA.the effect of which is truly seen on pak society from through out FATA to karachi.I think if thats the reason enough if you can trust one hasish trader pindi GHQ then sure you can also trust another hasish trader in kabul presidential palace.Isn't it?If GHQ can ve credibility then sure kabul can have credibility too.And last you heard karzai threatening to joing taliban but what you can say for GHQ who is already with taliban for the past 2 decades and with mujahideen through out 1980s?

And who are you to decide that india has no role to play in afghanistan as you said india's altruistic motives in afghan bad lands thats wat india is doing is to keep afghanistan away from the evil motives of pakistan. So you play your altruistic games and we wil play ours.=heheh

By hashish Amry I mean this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2F80llZ5F4

as for Drug Trafficking, Even bro of Mayor of Presidential Palace in Kabul, his highness Hamid Karazi is a Drug Lord, how many Drug Lords are you going to eliminate, Afghan Gov is full of them & americans wont mind using them against Taliban thats the reason they are there as for Pakistan Army name a Hasish Trader thats sitting in GHQ in Rawalpindi at least i dont know of one, We are not Afghanistan & world knows that, the Af-Pak term is restricted to border Areas of Afgh-Pak dont try to extend it to Rawalpindi, as for 80s, its a fact that CIA & Pakistan used Taliban to kick Soviets there is no doubt about it & no one will deny it

yup i am no one, neither are you

as for altruistic motives, the game is certainly on to outscore each others 'altruistic motives', just wait & see

Pakistani court, I thought Hash Boys are going to convict him in Afghanistan eh? after all they have a evidence & Pakistanis can't be trusted at all, but before they execute them do show us the proof that he's a PA Captain

as for Maulana Aunty, he's a ineffective piece on Sh!t now, the best he can do is do some speeches & then disappear in the mist, no body gives a F about him but i have to agree he must have been shot at sight, but how you thought about comparing Mulana Aunty with this issue?
