re: AEW&C systems of China

If PLAAF had an operational quality AEW they would be pumping them out by the dozens.

5 KJ-2000s confirmed since quite a few years. That's as good as IAF's 3 + 2 Phalcons. Possible 8 in number.

The others finished development only recently. The KJ-200 saw an unexpected crash sometime ago. So, maybe there are delays in this aspect. Again, it matches DRDO's timeline for equivalent aircraft.

Nah, KJ200 already entered active service in 2009 and even the export model of Y8 AWAC a.k.a the ZDK 03 was commissioned to serve PAF since last year.

KJ-2000 was supposed to go to Israel for Phalcon radars... that never happened and as far as we know, it still has no operational radar. The Y8s still look to be prototypes.

ZDK-03 is an old E-2C equivalent AEW. It has some old PESA radar, or maybe not even that. I doubt it is something PLAAF will be interested in.

KJ-200, the last we know there were only 3 after the 2nd prototype crashed.

That is wrong. You are talking about the A-50 that did go to Israel and left to China without any Israeli systems. The radar is similar to the ones the PLAN uses on their ships. There is a radar on board, 3 arrays infact.

Yeah. The KJ-200 are more prototypes than operational aircraft.

How can it be wrong if it is more a prototype?

The number of KJ-2000 is limited mainly because PLAF don't have enough IL76 transporters to be modified as AWACS. We ordered a bunch of IL76s from Russia but they have been still failed in delivering them until now, and even might be never. The ideal carrier for AWACS should be civilian planes of Boeing or Airbus series, but China are under sanction so has promised not to use them for military tasks.

Because prototypes won't be painted with in-service camou and won't be conducting routing training and patrol, clear?

If it were the case, one of the two flew over TAM square on Oct 1, 2009 to celebrate their National Day? Think...

The two paragraphs are referring to two different aircraft.

The first paragraph talked about KJ-2000 with the 3 arrays on the massive dome.

The second paragraph refers to the KJ-200 with the beam balance radar.

The Russians will start producing the IL-476. I think the initial order for 30 IL-76s will be given to Russia instead. The IL-476 and S-400 export model is expected to be bought by China.

The first flight is expected in September this year.

I dunno.

after the project passed the National test in 2009, just within years about one dozen of KJ200/Y-8W AEW airplanes entered in PLAAF (Blue and Grey painting theme)

and PLANAF(all Grey painting theme) service...

---------------------------------------

but during the daily operation and practical application in large scale exercises, the AESA radar's Balanced Beam layout seems have more disadvantages than the advantages. we might see no more KJ200s joining the fleet in the future. the replacement - a new project has emerged for years...we have seen the the new Radar layout design tested on the TESTBED -Y8CE(also the testbed for ZDK-03 project)

recently we got to know that this new AWACS project was named as KJ500...two planes have been manufactured. a fixed rotodome containing three AESA antennas arranged in a triangular configuration, a design similar to that of KJ-2000 in order to provide a full 360° coverage.--it's said that it's a downsized KJ2000 system but not downgraded...

the second Gen home-made AEW&C system--KJ500 joined in PLAAF and PLAN almost at the same time...it would replace the KJ200 even the KJ2000 system...

PLAAF paint coating scheme
