'Pak needs mini-nukes to deter India'

WASHINGTON: The long-time guardian manager of Pakistan's nuclear assets is maintaining that the country's new battlefield tactical nuclear weapons is serving as a deterrent to war with India, amid growing concerns in Washington that it has actually shortened the fuse because the mini-nukes, which are delegated to field commanders, could fall into rogue hands.

Not going to happen, insisted retired general Khalid Kidwai, custodian and planner of Pakistan's nuclear security and strategy for many years, despite reports within the country that it has had to weed out prospective extremists with "negative tendencies" from its ranks. If anything, he asserted, the tactical nukes, which can be used on battle formations, had deterred India's Cold Start doctrine, which is aimed at a quick punitive military strike in the event of another Mumbai-style operation by Pakistani intelligence.

Skepticism ran deep at a Carnegie Endowment event on nuclear security where Kidwai, who led the administration of Pakistan's nuclear and missile weapons program and now serves as an adviser to the National Command Authority, was grilled about what US analysts believe is a shortening of the nuclear fuse by Pakistan with its Nasr missile, which has a 60-m range. Kidwai insisted that it's development and deployment actually made war less likely because India had had to rethink the Cold Start strategy.

On its part, India has indicated that use of any nuclear weapon by Pakistan, regardless of its size, will result in massive retaliation. But Kidwai appeared to counter that by revealing that Pakistan's Shaheen-3 missile, test fired this month with a 2750-km range, was aimed at countering India's second-strike capability, possibly from bases it was developing in Andaman Nicobar Island on the far side of India's east coast.

Although the missile's range brings the middle-east, including Israel, into the nuclear calculus, Kidwai insisted the Pakistani weapons program was India- specific.

US nuclear experts are alarmed at what they see as Pakistan's lowering of the nuclear threshold even as Islamabad blames it on Washington's tilt towards New Delhi in recent years, including the civilian nuclear deal that Pakistan claims allows India to expand its nuclear arsenal.

"Pakistani military planners and front-line soldiers will find battlefield nuclear weapons to be a logistical nightmare. Indeed, the unanticipated challenges that arise with the forward deployment and use of tactical nuclear weapons — incorporating nuclear fire planning with conventional maneuver operations, maintaining a clear chain of command in crisis scenarios where nuclear weapons are being used, and hardening communications against EMP blasts, among other dilemmas — offset the deterrent value these systems are purported to provide," warned a recent review by the Stimson Center of Pakistan's tactical nukes.

Jeffrey McCausland, the author of the report, concluded that that Pakistan's efforts to develop and produce short-range, nuclear-capable systems will seriously undermine deterrence stability and escalation control on the subcontinent.

Such conclusions, widespread in the US strategic community, has not stopped Washington from continuing to support what critics see as fungible US aid to Islamabad that frees up Pakistan's own scarce resources to develop nuclear weapons.

Do they think a mini nuke will stop a full blown nuclear attack by India? And the US for all its "concern" is actually funding all these "dirty bombs".

Has it really made India re-think its cold start doctrine or is this all hot air? Secondly how easy is to proliferate these mini nukes?

Answer to every threat including farts coming from the direction of India is nukes :rotflmao:

It doesn't talk about mini nukes or how exactly these pakis plan to use them.
The way I looked at it, Pakistan won't be able to stop the armoured thrust even if it used it's regular nukes of 10-40 kiloton range. A single sub kiloton nuke will take out only a very few tanks with proper spacing and will not just be very expensive but also very stupid thing to do. When you start panicking and throw nukes willy nilly, don't expect other countries to be welcoming this move

Pakistan doesn't need nukes to frighten India. Even if Pakistan doesn't have a single nuke, even if Pakistan only has a poor military, India would still be frightened. This fear is based on history. Since Hindus have always lost wars to Muslims - historical fact, not my personal view - this fear of losing to Pakistan will always be there for most Indians.

If you disagree, ask yourself why even the so-called nationalist hindu party like the BJP has always fallen at Pakistan's feet and begged for a reprieve? Why even these staunch hindutva clowns get jittery and surrender to pakistan? It is because historically, Hindus have always surrendered to Muslims - in modern times, that's just playing out as India vs Pakistan.
Oh yes, that's why proud Moslems got wrecked by beggar Hindus in 1965, 1971 and 1999. Not to mention Siachen.

These nukes are not to deter India. They are to provide cover/shelter to terrorists.

What baloney are you talking? Has it escaped your vitrified mind that Pakistan is no longer the pakistan of 1947. Also they are talking about these mini nukes as being a "deterrent" to India's cold-start doctrine. That's another way of accepting their weakness.

It might have escaped your attention since you are a genius that pakistan is not in any position to last beyond few days in any war. Afghan war is funded by US, Yemen war by Saudi, nobody will fund Pakistan's war against India.

India hasn't fallen at anybody's feet whereas pakistan is the clown who can be taken for a ride by anyone for a few bucks. History of muslims is fraught with aggression from hindus and finally the mughals were laid to rest before the brits came and took the task to its completion.

1971 still hurts the Pakis. Siachen still hurts and they tried to act smart in Kargil and lost.

You mean the below? Pakis are pussies and first bent over and surrendered and converted before Muguls and then before Hindoooos in 1971. This is not my personal views but plain FACTS.

Your "Tiger" Niazi turned out to be a submissive Mouse.

Your hate, helplessness and frustration before India is hilarious.

I also think the same. Because if India penetrates quickly they will have to use them near their own territory. Any attack of a larger scale within India will result in massive retaliation. While they lack conventional warfare skill we don't and nothing stops us from using it to our advantage. We will then be justified in using a nuke to END matters.

Did you change the weed brand? How are they going to provide cover to terrorists with nuke bombs? Are you trying to introduce a hitherto unknown suicide bomber (diff being he has a nuke bomb to blow up) Enter the sophisticated suicide bomber.

Don't you get it. His father was second guy from the left in the third picture. Poor sod has been scarred ever since. His mother making both of them wear burqa every night before bed didn't helped either.
